Dragon Quest (or Warrior) was a monumental achievement for its time, but its levelling system prevents most anyone from having fun past the halfway mark. Then it just turns into mindless grinding. I am thankful for emulators and fast-forward options, otherwise, I would have certainly abandoned my quest.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

While revolutionary for the time and charming in an old-timey sense, this game has aged like milk. To be specific, the grinding needed to even stand a chance at some enemies and bosses is incredibly tedious and not fun. Stuck with any of the remakes, SNES and onward.

A fun little rpg that really feels like a classic knight quest. The flexibility of the quests allows the world to feel real and complex. The conversations with the townsfolk are useful and at times necessary. You can't overlook anything.

3 stars for short gameplay and the fact Loto's Seal has to be the biggest crock of horsesh*t I have ever seen.

A fairly fun, but often very obtuse RPG. It's a very static game with not much room for diversity in the gameplay styles.

Basic RPG for the late 80's: Save the Princess, gather the treasures of Erdrick, and defeat the Dragon Lord. Gets some bonus points as it's the first RPG that I finished.

I played the fan translated SNES version. I enjoyed it but needed a guide to know what to do and where to go.

What a mess. Obliterated by the test of time.
Endless grinding, every boss is a level check (even many enemies), and there's 0 strategy to the combat.
On the other hand, some of the best visuals and actual storytelling the NES ever saw, with an impressively sized world.
Will never play this again, bu somewhat-glad to say I've experienced it once.

It's aight I guess. It's a perfectly functioning, if not simple RPG. Very grindy but hey, that's a retro RPG for you. I'm giving it a middle ground score because it's legacy is just too important to ignore, despite the fact that the game is just unbelievably mid to low tier in every other aspect.

Not good, but I didn't hate it as much as SaGa 3 or Mystic Quest, despite those games technically having more going for them.

As someone who has never played a Dragon Quest game, I didn't expect this to hold up as well as it does. The sense of accomplishment when making progress really helps prevent things becoming too repetitive.

Play this without a guide and only ask a friend for help when you've exhausted your options and you should have a pretty good time.

Mine had a faulty save battery, so I never got very far 😅.

It was such a cool game though, the monsters were very intimidating.

I'm gonna be nice to this dinosaur of an RPG. Because honestly despite the low score I'm giving it (reflecting my personal enjoyment of the game), I don't think it's all that bad for the time it was created in. In fact, it's pretty great when you consider when it came out. I just don't think it holds up very well for someone like me, who already isn't a massive fan of RPGs. I'm hoping to change that by going through this series but hooo boy this was a bit of a rough start. The guide I read while playing certainly helped me with knowing where I needed to go.

Overall, the progression follows a simple rule : If you go there, will you get your ass kicked? If that's the case, then go to an area where you won't get your ass kicked, grind for a few hours, and try again. That's more or less the gameplay loop. Effective in 1986, but in 2023, I would say it leaves a bit to be desired. The size of the map helped the game never get too annoying at least, since it's easily completable in an afternoon.

Also, and that goes without saying, but the monster/character design done by Akira Toriyama is absolutely incredible. The music is also pretty good, though the limited amount of tracks means that it didn't get to shine as much as I assume it will in later entries.

(joguei 5 minutos)

perfect game, I played DRAGON QUEST, on famicom though, don't know why there's only an entry for the western release

Saved the princess and that's about all I wanted to do, even though I love this game quite a bit. Super Famicom port of this game rules.

It's crazy to think this game came out a mere year before Final Fantasy, when Final Fantasy is infinitely better. Better story, better combat, better progression systems, better environments, better everything. Dragon Warrior is honestly barely playable as a video game. The entire gameplay loop is grinding out areas until you can afford all the gear, and then moving to the next area. This game might as well be on the Atari considering how dated it is.

Dragon Warrior (or Dragon Quest in the rest of the world) is the first game in the Dragon Quest series and is the first RPG of its kind. This game was so influential and went on to directly inspire the Final Fantasy games among countless others. The gameplay seems simple nowadays but was revolutionary back in 1986, making this one of the greatest NES games. Playing as a lone hero is different than most RPGs and makes this game worth playing to this day. The GBC port improved on a lot of the graphics and gameplay and is definitely the better version. Overall this game still stands out as an RPG and is one of the most important games in history.

"A slime draws near".

I give this game props for creating the JRPG genre - without this game, there wouldn't be some of my favorite franchises, including Final Fantasy... but this game was rough to play, even in the early 90's. In fact, it was my very first RPG game and it pushed me away from the genre entirely up until FFVII released and changed my mind on the genre. Now JRPGs are my favorite, so it is funny how it all shook out in the end.

Yes, it revolutionized JRPGs, but playing it nowadays, it's the most generic JRPG ever. There is a lot of grinding and the story is incredibly basic, so it is not very engaging. I guess it is kinda funny how everyone talks in Old English.

okay game but not that interesting, really. like yeah i guess part of that new wave of jrpgs, but if you want to play early rpgs you're better off with a game like ultima 3 exodus (probably a big inspiration for this game).
otherwise, it's fine. a fairly short rpg too, so you're not missing much but it's worth playing to see the "first" jrpg.

poopy, but INFINITELY important. cool game in retrospect, dont go back to it. the overworld theme is beautiful in its simplicity.

this game should be a history lesson and nothing more at this point.

Dragon Warrior is the best open world Katamari game since Elden Ring.

aged poorly but considering it's a really old rpg, that's to be expected. kind of hard difficulty and some cryptic locations but looking beyond that, fun time.

5/10
