Cannon Spike is a whimsical and creative adventure I had a blast playing on a cabinet at a convention. It feels like every great idea from a Saturday morning cartoon wrapped up in an hour-long arcade action extravaganza.

A very unique and awesome Capcom game, it's hard to describe how awesome of a crossover this is, from the awesome artstyle, to the character selection, beautiful original characters they introduced, gallery function, bosses like Fallen Balrog, Arthur rocking that huge armor, That cat with Cammy again! I love this game, I had a lot of fun and ended up beating it with all the characters and difficulties.
Only thing I did "miss" is if you beat the game on Hard you can replay it again Harder but frankly I don't want that or care, so.
I used an Infinite Lives cheat as the game felt pretty tough without it

Fun, Tough But Ultimately Shallow Run n' Gun-Shmup
Note: Co-op wasn't tested. Because I have no friends :(
Cannon Spike is the kind of game that oozes a sense of gameplay style that attracts you to playing it, easing you to the Run 'n Gun gameplay...Before very quickly slapping you with its shmup gameplay and making all but the most determined and skilled wimper away.
A team up from Capcom and Psikyo, the latter known for its shmups, Cannon Spike is a game that expects you to get your ass handed to you very quickly, learn from your mistakes and inch closer the next time you try, relying on a hectic mixture of memorisation, reflex and damage limitation.
If you can stomach the challenge, (and to be fair the Dreamcast version does allow you to make the game easier...or much harder if you are that kind of person,) you'll find a fun game with excellent controls and one that is very tough to beat. You only get three lives and then it's over and since you're not invincible after taking an attack straight away, you can take huge damage if you're got in a bullet stream or melee attacks (or both). While some of the characters have attacks that are very powerful, even on hardest difficulties, positioning and timing still matters as just spamming them will see you get caught out.
There isn't much in terms of music but there's a few good tracks ("Stage D - The Occupied Town" being the stand out) and the sound effects are nice too. Overall the potential for a really great, if gruelling, arcade game are there.
The problem then is that Cannon Spike is one of those games you want more from.
More in the presentation department as while the game looks sharp and some bosses look cool, it doesn't do much else.
More in the story as all you get is a simple plot explanation and, if you do complete the game, a short ending. Not asking for an in-depth plot but some banter from the bosses and some quick cut-scene after each level would be nice.
And more content as after finishing, all you really get unlocked is a gallery, as well as starting a second, much harder, loop if you finish the game on the default difficulty of higher. Though the latter sounds like punishment.
Cannon Spike is one of those games you wish you could love more. But it's difficulty will be a turn off for many who don't want to take the easy route (and play under a difficulties "Child" or "Baby") and for those who get good at it, there isn't much else to do.
Maybe it's one of those games you dust off and play now and then to have fun. Maybe it's something that's much more of a blast with co-op. But along the maybe's there is a "what if?" hanging around Cannon Spike too.
Still, even with a short play time it is fun and at the end of the day it is worth a play and even if its short.
Rating: 7/10

short but sweet. Fun little top down arcade shooter from capcom with a hint of capcom fanservice (you can play as arthur and B.B. Hood!). I have no idea what the plot was even supposed to be but for this kind of game who even cares. Theres co-op too which is always hype. Deffo would say to give the game a try. Not worth rediculous game collector prices, go grab some blank CD-Rs or something
Fifth GOTW finished for 2022. Short and fun game, beat it all the way through with two characters and each felt completely different. Looking forward to playing through again with the other characters. As others have mentioned, the lock-on is pretty terrible, but spent most of my time punching heads anyway. Had a blast!
a capcom shmup with this roster of characters should be fun. however, this game fucking sucks ass. it's boring, basic, ugly, and the music is surprisingly awful for a company known for banging soundtracks (especially in that era)
what the fuck happened here, did the janitor make this one?
i give it 1/5 just because arthur's design is fucking sick in this

A'ight, grindy arena shmup that probably works way better as co-op than singleplayer. The highlight is easily the odd-ball crossover roster; B.B. Hood/Mega Man/Arthur in particular are favorites, but I respect that the most relevant Capcom character here circa 2000 is Cammy of all people. The game doesn't actually do anything interesting as a crossover beyond the roster (and I guess Vega shows up as a boss), but it's cute that it exists.
Played through a ton of party games with a friend this week (many of them via Dreamcast emulation) and this was one of the better ones. It's like a crazy combination of beat em up and twin stick shooter, and it's got great Capcom guest characters too such as Mega Man and BB Hood from Darkstalkers. It's super short and the aiming could have been improved with twin stick aiming using the 2nd joystick, but I got a nice kick out of this with a friend just blitzing through levels and it's a really nice diversion if you just want fast and furious arcade combat with some of your favorite Capcom legends.
A kind of jank shoot-em-up/beat-em-up hybrid featuring a bunch of Capcom characters fighting and shooting against mostly faceless goons. It's as if they tried to make a twin stick shooter like Robotron, but with only one stick and an aim button that, for some reason, only lasts a few seconds before it needs to be hit again. I do enjoy the quick pacing of the game even if it does mean the game is short, and the novelty of playing as characters like Cammy, Mega Man, or B.B. Hood is pretty cool. There's fun to be had here, but it's not $300-$500 fun.
Good while it lasts but it's on the short side and feels cheap. Sound design is also kinda garbo, with a bad ost, mediocre sound effects and lots of compression. The pacing between short enemy waves and boss fights is good, and the majority of the boss fights (before stage 9) are really fun. In hindsight, this one's real rough, but I've replayed this one a LOT over the last two years, so there's gotta be something deeper pulling me in.
