Its a great visual novel! Its a charming and suspenseful story with a great soundtrack. It's been a minute since I played, but I recall at the time thinking there was a real missed opportunity with the way the dialogue choices affect the ending, or something about wanting a little more of one of the secondary heroine's interiority... But overall the execution of the writing is top-notch. The scene where Maddie freezes to death is probably the highlight of the game for me; it captures an incredible feeling of mounting tension and dread.

The primary way my girlfriend and I do dates is by playing VNs with one another over Discord, and this is one such VN that she recommended we play together. We read out the voices while we play, so it tends to take us a bit longer than just reading it in your head would, so it took us some 15 hours to get through this over the course of a few weekends. We played it in English and got the best ending~.

Heart of the Woods is a story about Maddie and her best friend Tara during a quite tense part of their relationship. Maddie has decided to leave the paranormal-focused YouTube show they've worked on together for years and it's caused a lot of strain in the relationship, and they're doing one last big outing together before Maddie leaves the show, taking a trip across the world to the remote Scandinavian village of Eisenfeld to visit a fan who claims there are all sorts of supernatural occurrences there. It's a game with a pretty small cast, mostly just being Maddie, Tara, Morgan (the fan they're visiting) and a couple others, but I like stories like that, so it's no big deal. The story does hop perspectives around fairly frequently, but it mostly centers on Maddie and Morgan, jumping to people who aren't them only very occasionally.

The writing has a few typos here and there, but it's a very sweet love story. It's also a very queer (by which I mean LGBTQIA+), and a good one of those at that. The mystery of what's going on in the town is also told in an engaging fashion, and although there isn't a ton of interactivity, there are a few choices you get to make that dictate just how things end up once you've wrapped up your battle against the supernatural. The art is very pretty, and has a lot of fun, subtle touches to how its done even though there isn't a ton of it. Worth mentioning on that note is how good the music is as well, as it does an excellent job of setting the mood~.

Verdict: Highly Recommended. Heart of the Woods is an excellent and delightful queer romance VN. If that's your kind of thing, then this is absolutely worth checking out.

Jesus christ they’re gay good for them

Where it Shines:
Gayness - 10/10
Pacing - 8/10
Characters - 10/10
The Good:
This game just made me 😭😭😭
I love all the characters. They all grew on me and I was so invested in their happiness. This game doesn't do the indie cliche of knocking you over the head with trauma either. It's just a story with mystery, love, cuteness, gayness, and you just can't put it down. It has tons of accessibility features as well.
The Bad:
Visual Novels as a genre are typically pretty verbose. This game is not as bad as others but still could learn a lesson in brevity. It does drag on with a lot of unnecessary text at times. I'd rather it was shorter and more concise than long for the sake of playtime. This is a minor complaint mind you.
Summary:
I love this game. I'm not usually into romance stuff but maybe it turns out I am as long as it's not cliche trite CIS HET gaze writing. I highly recommend this game to anyone who loves queer stories, visual novels, great art and music. If you don't like the genre though, its probably not for you. However, I will say this game made me more open to playing more VNs.

****note on my ratings:
half ⭐: hot trash garbage
⭐: below average, needs work
⭐⭐: average
⭐⭐⭐: pretty good
⭐⭐⭐⭐: excellent
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: all time favourite
half star ratings between those mean it's slightly better or worse than stated in this list.

pretty different from what I expected with how serious the stakes got, but very cute. did not know there was an 18+ patch till right after I got all the endings but oh well, sex scenes feel pretty unnecessary for this story

My fucking god! These bitches gay! Good for them! Good for them.

This game kind of came out of nowhere for me, I just discovered it one day, gave it a chance, and was delighted to discover that it's gay as hell, as well as just a little bit trans! The added voice work really elevates it, and my ADHD brain appreciates that it's more than just a slow burn romance, with some dramatic fantasy elements included too.

I wish Tara had been the main character of this one instead

Very nice VN, really loved the characters, the story had a bunch of twists i wasnt expecting, and it was just a very enjoyable time overall.
I want to be Tara's friend.

Visual novel about two friends with a web show where they investigate places said to have mysterious events, the supernatural, or unexplained phenomena happening there. They are invited to stay in a remote town for a month by a fan of the show, wanting to show them the mysterious of the forest and secretly wanting help fighting something much more dangerous.

Perspectives shift between the four main characters. Often well written, but with a limited focus on the mystery and danger of the area giving way to more lighthearted moments, sweet moments, or a greater focus on personal issues and hang ups. Done well, but you would think something like seeing a giant towering forest spirit might cause a greater hold up on the mundane and petty, more so when one of the characters had based so much of their recent life on finding a real proof of the things that she investigates. It ends up spending little time in what could have been more interesting supernatural elements and the town itself and residents within are almost ignored completely. There are three different endings based on three set moments where you make different choices but the choices don't have major effects until you reach the endings and two are just considered bad endings, they were not really necessary.

Good music and higher quality art work than what would usually be found in lower priced visual novels with some good expressions, backgrounds, and full images for certain events. Voice acting was recently added and the entire cast does a good job.

A patch can be downloaded to add in the adult content not in the Steam release by default, it can easily be ignored as it really doesn't add much of anything.

Recommended more for those that want a love story with a few darker elements rather than something that shifts between a love story with a mystery or horror focus.

Two well written romances, one that's more whimsical and faster, and another far more grounded and slower. Regardless of which one you prefer, good time is spent on each. Characters are all amazing as well. Made me cry big gay tears.

We really need these kinds of whimsical yet melancholic stories...also really great setting/general atmosphere.

Es una experiencia muy interesante la verdad se nota todo el cariño con el que el juego fue hecho, tengo pensado rejugarlo porque siento que no lo aprecie como debia

Shit slapped hard. I don't often read yuri visual novels but maybe I should look around for some more

YURI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈

très très bon vn yuri, avec une ambiance féérique et fantastique, j'ai bcp aimé, et c'est voiced!! ça c'est cool

not usually a VN person but.... the fairies dude listen the fairies

After Highway Blossoms, I expected a kind of light, fluffy yuri story. This was not that at all, and I loved it for that. The story went in ways I didn't see coming, and I loved every minute of it.

Plus Kira Buckland's in it, which is cool as hell.

i love women but neither of the romances particularly moved me for this. nice art tho.

cute and sweet wlw romance that dips into a more serious fantasy which works alright (also trans rights)

Not what I expected from the creators of Highway Blossoms, and unfortunately, I don't say that in a positive way.

The game advertises itself as "a modern fairy tale", so I was expecting a wholesome love story with supernatural elements. What I got was a story about an evil, ancient, abusive stepmother and four friends' quest to fucking kill her, frequently interrupted by two romance subplots. The tone varies from from saccharine romance to the unsettlingly supernatural to whimsical fantasy to eldritch horror. I didn't like how intense the story gets by the end - it felt so far removed from the game I was advertised.

Maddy and Abigail's romance is kinda lame. They spend a spectral honeymoon together in a magical forest. They visit beautiful locations and blush furiously at every insinuation that they might become an item. For the most part it's devoid of much conflict and it's a little dull. The 18+ scenes don't add anything to their relationship either, although it's a little endearing to know Abigail's a top.

I enjoyed Tara and Morgan's relationship a lot more. They start off as friends with benefits, neither of them wanting to be emotionally vulnerable. But then they slowly begin to trust one one another and realise how much they unwittingly care for each other. They eventually let their masks slip, and find comfort in sharing their feelings. It's a much more compelling dynamic, in my opinion, than Maddy and Abigail's perfect fairytale romance. And it's appropriately balanced with the tension they feel while investigating Maddy's disappearance, keeping their subplot interesting.

Tara herself is a great character, and probably the one aspect of this game I'll remember long after my playthrough. And not just because she's a trans main character. Her over-the-top charisma makes her a delight to watch, even when her jokes don't land. Hell, ESPECIALLY when her jokes don't land. I always love characters like this, so it's no surprise I love Tara.

I wasn't really sold on the fantasy elements we see throughout the story. It feels like the writers threw together 4 or 5 ideas they had without a lot of consideration for how well they mesh together. Like, is Evelyn even connected to the forest, at all? It seems like the simultaneous existence of an unearthly monster and a magical forest is completely coincidental.

The fairies are introduced extremely late for how important they are to the last act of the game, and Geladura doesn't have much of a presence, either. I wish a little more thought was put into what the major payoffs are, and how to effectively set them up and integrate them into the main narrative.

Looking back and writing about it, Heart of the Woods doesn't feel like a single game. The supernatural/fantasy elements and the two love stories feel at odds with each other, and throwing in the idea that "love makes magic stronger" at the end doesn't fix this. Neither story feels developed enough to support the other, and I think THAT'S what's been bugging me ever since I finished Heart of the Woods. Play Highway Blossoms instead.

Nice game. I will probably never play through it again because its far from perfect, but nice. Full disclosure I am probably underrating this because I used to be friends with someone on the dev team (dont know if they still are on the dev team) and they are not a great person.

Awesome vn! I liked the voice acting, and it was hella gay!!!

One of the most impressive and enjoyable parts of Heart of the Woods is, especially in its opening couple acts, how it manages to gently push your suspension of disbelief further and further in its introduction of its fantastical elements. At the very beginning you find yourself asking, just like Maddie does, whether the magical elements could really be real, and Morgan is believably presented as unreliable in what she's saying. Yet, over the course of these opening hours, the game submerses you into these magical elements step by step so that each level deeper you go just adds to all the mystery and intrigue and excitement; the big reveal of the forest spirit, looming outside the church, is particularly breathtaking. Yet one of my favourite moments is when the game swapped point-of-view to Morgan for the first time, right before the introduction of Evelyn's ability to influence and control people's actions; the timing on this is so perfect for suspending disbelief as up until now Morgan has been presented as unreliable through the eyes of Maddie and Tara, and we need to see things through her own eyes to know that we can actually completely believe what she's about to say about her mother. A moment earlier and the mystery wouldn't have been so enjoyable, a moment later and we'd struggle to get on board with the notion that Evelyn is capable of such things.

I do think there are some elements of the story-telling that work less well, in particular I think this game is generally worse at resolving problems than developing them with a handful of situations that were resolved in what felt like deus-ex-machina-esque means that, whilst they later might make sense in context of the world-building, weren't hugely narratively satisfying at the time. I like the direction these moments take the story, and am somewhat forgiving towards them because of that, but wish they could have been brought to me in a more satisfying manner considering quite how good the game is at initially developing and submersing us into this world. On a different note, Evelyn forcing Morgan to burn down the main tree at the heart of the forest felt like an incredibly sudden development, introducing a bunch of different world-building elements all at once, and I really felt like it would have benefited from having more in the way of direct build-up. I'd also say the sense of time in the visual novel is very strange, with me always being caught by surprise to find out that a few days had passed here, only a couple days there, I was left with a very poor sense of how long anything was taking, where in the month I was, or why there were periods of sudden inaction (this gets particularly awkward after Maddie disappears, when the story has to dedicate a lot of in-world-days to the development of Maddie and Abby's relationship, and Maddie's understanding and exploration of the forest, and it feels like the story finds it hard at points to find stuff for Morgan and Tara to do other than hang out with one another and be scared of Evelyn in the time being most of which is enjoyable but it's really hard to shake the feeling that Maddie has experienced a lot more days than Tara has in this time period).

As far as the central relationships go, I have complicated feelings on Maddie and Abigail's relationship. I loved a lot of their interactions with each other that existed outside of their relationship; those initial meetings in the forest, Maddie bringing the books so that Abby could show her name and listen to the children's story, Abby sharing her favourite parts of the forest with Maddie after Maddie joined her as a spirit. These moments are so endearing, and it made me happy that Abby finally had company after so long alone. It felt like an almost sisterly bond was forming between them, Maddie becoming protective and caring towards Abby, and that's a part of why it felt kind of weird to me when the story pushed things between them in a romantic direction later on? Abby is rendered in a much more childish way in a bunch of different regards and this makes it so hard for me not to see these early interactions as those between a big and little sister. I think, on top of this, it's hard for me to see things between them as that romantic even outside of that aspect? Part of this is that I felt like the visual novel didn't confront how the trauma they'd both experienced might impact a relationship between them nearly as well as it did with regards to Morgan's trauma and the impact of that on her feelings towards Tara, and a part of this is that being stranded alone with someone, perhaps forever, floating through the forest with them and knowing you may never see another human again and only then seeing them as a potential romantic partner strikes me as more sad than romantic. Like they went from this sisterly affection to being partners potentially more out of loneliness than anything? I know that's not what the story is going for, but the sense that it could be read that way added to my inability to get on-board with their relationship as much as I'd like.

Conversely, I loved Tara and Morgan's relationship. The development from their early interactions up to them being girlfriends by the end of the visual novel, and everything that came in-between, felt incredibly organic, their interactions with each other were consistently a delight, and it felt like their relationship was handled in a really mature way respecting the challenges they're both facing and their attempts to figure out what they actually want in a hard time in their lives. Seeing them gradually grow closer, and open up more and more, and communicate so well with one another throughout this process, was a real joy. Tara and Maddie's friendship, and Morgan and Abigail's discovery of their sisterhood, are both engaging and really add to the story in different ways too, and the sense of these four people becoming a chosen family towards the end was really enjoyable and felt earnt.

(this review will spoil which characters are in romantic relationships)

the writing is incredible. it made me cry several times. and the fact that all of our characters are women (most of them queer women at that) is just so joyous & refreshing.

and one of those women is a trans woman. a trans woman who is by her own admission "dumber than bricks." (gosh i wonder who i relate to in this story.) and who is well-written. heck, everyone in here is well-written. they're all imbued with so much personality. they're all very distinct, and very real-feeling. i love this big family of queer girls.

i think the thing about the writing that impresses me the most is how real all the emotions in this feel. it's really good at drawing you in, at making you feel what the characters feel, and feeling for them. it also tackles abuse in a way that made me feel incredibly seen.

it's not without flaws. the fact that maddie & abigail are afforded two sex scenes while tara & morgan are allowed none is a problem. a big, frustrating, unsurprising problem. the developers' excuse is that they're worried about people fetishizing tara or being transphobic, and just... hi. no. please get out of here with those excuses.

as if straight men haven't been fetishizing cis lesbians for basically as long as they've known there's such a thing. and i notice they don't let concerns about homophobia stop them from showing two cis women having sex.

ok, this is really what i want to know. why are you more interested in how cis people are going to react than how trans people are going to react? we play your games too. you're going to include a character that's "for" us but not afford her the same space to explore her romantic relationship as your other main characters? honestly, fuck off with that.

in spite of how angry i am about this, you'll notice i've still given the game five stars. i already talked about how incredible the writing (otherwise) is, and it made me cry like a bunch of times. and one of the reasons i'm so upset that tara didn't get her freak on is because the character means so much to me, and for me to hold that against the developers while not also giving them credit for creating a character that means so much to me feels patently unfair.

honestly, in spite of my one fairly substantial complaint, i hecking love this game. any game that makes me cry this much & is this gay is gonna catapult up near the top of my list of favorite games of all time, and this is no exception.
