New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a mixed bag. While it excels in many areas, its lack of innovation and occasional emptiness hold it back from reaching its full potential. The game boasts impeccable mechanics and introduces fresh gameplay elements at every turn. Playing co-op with my mom was an absolute blast, and the seamless multiplayer experience added to the fun. However, some levels feel strangely empty, perhaps due to accommodating up to four players on screen simultaneously. Sacrificing level depth for the sake of multiplayer compatibility feels like a missed opportunity, especially when considering the option to play solo. Additionally, the New Super Mario formula, while tried-and-true, feels a bit stale.
Overall, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a good game, but it falls short of greatness due to its lack of innovation and occasional shortcomings.

It's a streamlined mario with a few mechanics that are interesting, but it's one main goal, attempting to join mario together with 4 player simultaneous co-operation, falls flat. On the one hand, it's confusing and chaotic to play with others. Still fun, but you could have more fun playing any other number of co-op games that feel right for the type of gameplay. And then if you go at it solo, it feels a bit bare-bones for a mario game. Too simplified to enjoy greatly since it doesn't have any of the really white-knuckled sections some other mario games can deliver while still being fairly accessible to all parties. It fed a strange mario maker 2 void before that was released, but felt worse as an overall 2D mario title than any other.
"Oh nooooo the New series is so repetitive! It's all the same! So boring!"... Good thing I'm a Mega Man fan, this doesn't mean shit to me :D
Overall a fun game that doesn't do anything crazy but is very competent, as are all the games in the New series. And of course, this one has extra value for the multiplayer (which is how I played all of it).
The world map is pretty cool too!

Cheap ass level design that centers around abilities that make some levels a mere formality, but are simultaneously a fucking torture to play without them. Too hard, too filled with shit, made to be beaten by using the flying Mario costume, but if you fuck it up it’s just 50x as punishing with regular jumping Mario. And I know it’s also cheap to say that a game doesn’t feel good and call it a day, but this game DOESN’T FEEL GOOD. Mario is agonizingly slow and his jump is short and floaty and never quite feels like he does what you want to do, so you have to constantly run EXCEPT IN MOST OF THE CHALLENGING JUMPS YOU CAN’T WIND UP SAID RUN PRIOR TO THE JUMP. I think that jumping to the wall to do a wall jump instead of jumping contrary to the wall is just weird. You cannot afford a weird direction mechanic or whatever when you already feel like shit to control. “It’s not shit, is deliberate” give me a break! Plus is just a tiresome formula with scenarios you’ve seen before a million times, a rehash of a rehash, calling it redundant seems redundant itself.
I don't know why this game is as hated as it is. It was a lot, lot harder than Super Mario Bro's Wonder, even if it's not as innovative or as unique as Wonders is, and because it's a lot harder, the gameplay is also a lot better. I had a blast playing this with my little brother and it reminded me of when I once played this game with my best friend. Solid game. I definitely think this is better than Super Mario Bro's Wonder.
Played this game 2-player with my partner, and I think that it would definitely be a better experience single-player. The player collision and ability to hurt and jump on each other was very annoying and frustrating when the game asked for precise platforming. Almost every world overstayed it's welcome, and a lot of worlds introduced mechanics that just weren't that fun. However, the final boss was pretty cool, and some of the game was pretty enjoyable.
