I am still blown away I only found out about this game through a cursory "soulslike games" Google search and that it was not on the radar of and as well received by people who enjoy soulslikes. Not everything has to be a competition of course but it's just very curious how this game's release played out in comparison to say, Lies of P, and tbh... I far more enjoyed Steelrising. I was not super interested in the French history details but gameplay wise, Aegis was so fun to embody. And the relationship between Aegis and Athenais was beautiful and heartbreaking. And her outfits? chef's kiss. The gameplay was super solid, I loved feeling so agile and capable as Aegis and the weapons were fun and interesting. Only occasionally did the enemies feel a little repetitive. Also interestingly, all of the bosses were a walk in the park, most I beat on my first attempt. But imo, that's not a fault, it meant I could enjoy the world and journey in a more relaxing manner but I could see how some people would want a more challenging experience. Overall it's one of the best non-FromSoft soulslikes I've played, would recommend.

I really enjoyed the more open approach to the level design but compared to other soulslike it lacks substance and was somewhat interested with the story by the end. Levels are all somewhat similar in look and enemies are all fought in pretty much the same way, including bosses. The visuals vary from good to bad depending on the levels since there's so little contrast in the colors used in the environment and lighting.

Steelrising had an interesting concept of running around as an automaton in 1789 Paris, but in execution it was just another soulless souls-like, and one I didn’t much care for. While I enjoyed the enemy designs and, at times, the combat with the different weapon types, the frustrations came from getting around the maps. The barricades in particular, there were so many of them blocking paths and it was inconsistent on how to bypass them—some I could jump over, and some had invisible walls, it was a toss of the coin. The invisible walls were especially egregious when taking into account how it encouraged the use of the jump dash unlock. Suffice it to say, I hated how awkward it was to get around.

Another disappointment was the story; I found it dull. Every cutscene / conversation was hard to get through until I started skipping them all. It's a shame, BUT it's a good thing that others have enjoyed it where I didn't.

Steelrising:

Man stirbt quasi nie.

bad. even a soul like game not this hard in the combat mechanic, again, maybe its just me bad at this game.

Mom can we have Lies of P?
No, there's Lies of P at home.

5/10

Steampunk French Revolution: totally approved.
Simpler soulslike gameplay: approved.
Redundant and very basic level design: not approved.
Very bad plot and writing: totally not approved.
Poorly designed characters, enemies, and avatar: not approved as well.

Steelrising is Spiders' most impressive effort yet. I was skeptical of their ability to push themselves into creating a true soulslike game, but Steelrising delivers. There is quite a bit of jank and budget here, but I liked this game a lot.

The gameplay is fairly standard action RPG combat that is responsive, but can feel a bit loose at times. Defense has an emphasis on dodging and the game is very permissive here, with generous iframes and stamina usage. I used a fast, dual-wielding elemental build and found the difficulty to be essentially negligible for the whole game, which is fine -- I am not playing a Spiders game for the extreme challenge and, to be honest, I don't know if their mechanics can really deliver.
Combat centered around elemental effects for me (I think other builds would be straight damage or poise breaking), and each of them has a unique effect that is fun to try to play around and stack (though ice is just overpowered). Enemy resistances also have a big impact on which you can lean on, so type matching can keep things a bit interesting even when the lack of enemy variety becomes apparent.
There is a cool mechanic that lets you hit a button when you run completely out of stamina to gain it back instantly, a bit like a perfect reload in Gears of War. It puts a stacking debuff on you, but if you play well it can allow you to have near infinite stamina, which feels satisfying and effective. A weird bug where sometimes it gets in a state where you can't regen and can't trigger the recovery does sour it a bit, unfortunately.
This game is the best playing of Spiders games thus far and I was legitimately surprised by how much I enjoyed the gameplay. It is just expressive enough to be fun and not so punishing that the jank and inexactness of the mechanics feels bad.

Steelrising looks good. I don't think I like it visually quite as much as Greedfall and it definitely feels like there is less actual variety to the environments -- you will only ever see French cities, gardens, and some rural areas. They nail a certain level of oppressiveness here that matches the chaotic French Revolution setting very well. Steelrising doesn't shy away from the horror of the historic event even while injecting it with a weird clockwork army twist.
I really like the designs of the machines here, especially in contrast to the player character, Aegis. Enemy machines are mostly jangly weirdos who flop around, making their attacks initially feel very unpredictable and hard to deal with. Aegis (as a dancer) is fluid and lets you feel like you are literally dancing circles around enemies while you fight them. It is a cool take on this clockwork aesthetic that feels unique as compared to Steelrising's contemporaries.
As I mentioned earlier, there really aren't enough enemy types in the game, with many of them being reused with different elemental types. In general, the game content is just stretched too thin. This is pretty surprising, as I felt like Greedfall managed to make really good choices about how to use its content and didn't overstay its welcome quite as much as Steelrising manages to.

The story here is pretty wild and Spiders leans all the way into it. This is a retelling of the French Revolution (including all of the major historic players) but with Louis XVI using a clockwork army to enact his oppression on the people. Things get a bit weird with the members of Estates General speaking at length about liberty and politics and country while an army of automatons is killing everyone, but I am here for it. You make some choices about which factions to prop up that I am sure I would have understood if I knew anything about history. I went with Lafayette because he seems like a cool dude in Hamilton, but he is probably a fascist, so, you win some you lose some.
Spiders is a French studio and it is great to see them tackle their home turf like this. You can see the passion and lived experience in their capturing of the city of Paris and the general feel of the environments.
All the acting is fairly well done, despite the animation only delivering about 30% of the time (again, budget). There are a couple of standouts such as Nicolas Flamel, who is over the top in just the right way. I was also very impressed with Aegis as she (somewhat predictably) becomes less robotic over the course of the game and the acting choices are subtle and believable with a final performance that is super solid.

I liked Steelrising and am happy that it continues Spiders' general upward trend. I think the world and storytelling in Greedfall is a bit better, but the gameplay in Steelrising is much better than any of their previous games and I had a good time throughout!

Surprisingly enjoyable Bloodborne clone set in the funniest depiction of the French Revolution I've seen in a while, where everyone speaks in cut-glass British accents with a sprinkling of 'zut alors!' to remind you where we are.

I find Spiders to be an interesting developer. They have yet to make a game I think is great, but they have potential. Both Steelrising and Greedfall have great moments, but end so roughly as to tarnish my overall impressions. Steelrising also starts rough which definitely will stop many Soulsborne players initially, especially since Lies of P showed that it can be done so smoothly and flawlessly. Aegis is ganky. But after awhile I did get used to her (the breaking mechanic with her endurance grated on my nerves near the end). The game overall can be considered pretty fun. There's lots to like about it. The weapon diversity can be a lot of fun with lots of different special attack. It starts with the combat being difficult and the level design being linear, but ends with the combat being easy but the level design being confounding. I feel like they confused From Software's clever level design with confusing where there's only one way out of a section and it's frequently not apparent. The story is hit-or-miss with using real characters from the French Revolution but mixing in robots. It gets way too talky (like with Greedfall) with too many powdered wig dudes that I got pretty bored. If you are well read on the French Revolution will you find this story interesting. As mentioned before, like with Greedfall, the last act is irritating. The Versailles level is too long with too many twists and turns with too many enemies (I ran past most of them) to land with a final boss that had too much HP and felt unfairly difficult after beating many of the previous bosses on my first try. I have lots of other nitpicks after being a big soulsborne fan. While I think this game is very playable, there's several things that just don't cut it in a soulsborne game. I feel like these people have a good game in them, but they still don't seem to be learning from their mistakes. C'est la vie!

I'm glad they gave this game away for free. Its the game of all time. It plays it incredibly safe. Usually, souls-like zone in on one specific mechanic they liked, and not on what made the souls games work. Steelrising focuses on the bloodborne quickness and Sekiro posture system. Weapons are samey. Blocking, parrying, and special attacks are restricted to only one of the respective options which makes combat and experimentation have this gross film covering it. I found myself pretty overpowered by the end of the first major boss. There isn't much intrigue in the game. The setting gets antiquated when the enemy variety can be counted with two hands.

For some reason, I can't find anything impactful from Steelrising. Jumping is a nice feature, but verticality isn't respected enough to go further than simple platforming. There aren't tricks in the environment. That kinda sounds weird as I typed this, but the enemies and environment just felt....robotic no pun intended. There wasn't a chest that turned into automates, or a random boulder or stab in the back. You just sorta waltz into each battle without much surprise. Loot density is disgusting, and I started to just beeline it to avoid being pissed fighting a mini-boss just to get a Resistance potion. I don't know...it's just....a game.

Bloodborne but French Revolution but not French Revolution

Draft

Combat felt sometimes unresponsive. inputs can feel missed and can get stuck on minor environmental areas that don't feel like an intentional trap. However, it is a mostly solid combat system with well-done mechanics and a bit of variety. There are some really satisfyingly done mechanics, such as the party and the stamina system that create a nice risk-reward in each encounter.

Exploration rewards were mostly disappointing, but exploration was definitely rewarded. The opening of shortcuts and new pathways was done really well, which was especially apparent on revisits to each area.

Amazing sense of style and setting with great attention to detail in art and sound design. Unfortunately for my tastes, the story is told in the most boring way possible. I became very uninvested after a while, even though the main story was interesting enough. The side quests really underscore this point, which makes even just attempting the second ending to the game tedious. (Without even touching on the difference in the ending)
- was hilarious in one cutscene to see the player character tune out of the exposition going on in one scene, unfortunately just for a cutaway to another expository scene but funny nonetheless. The worst example of this was progressing through all the side quests at the same time. At one point, I had to talk to almost everyone in a room multiple times to progress so many storylines and it was just a slog of dialogue and mini-scenes.
Gameplay unfolds in a great logical progression, with abilities and weapon variety unlocking and deepening gameplay in substantial ways.

Over all a pretty good game to play through, but completionists like myself risk growing to resent the game.

I'm about at the very end now. It's got quite a bit of jank, but as long as you go no where near a pc version of this game, it is surprisingly fun.

This game… I just don’t know what to say really, while some parts are super cool, some bosses are fun, some levels were fun to explore, other parts of the game genuinely just were boring, like the story, characters, late game areas (the mines especially). But with that, Aegis is super fun to control, the weapons are all extremely fun to tinker and play around with and it all feels pretty fair the whole way through

Pretty ok Soulslike, not really hard overall. The story is not incredible.
