After years of hearing smash fans begging for Geno in smash i finally get to play the game they have been hyping up for years. I didn't think it would live up the hype, but it really did for me.
I wish more games would take ideas from this games combat/out of combat gameplay. The writing made me laugh out loud more than a few times and playable Bowser was awesome. I also enjoyed how weird a lot of the enemies/locations were.

I actually enjoyed this game far more than I thought I would!

I wasn't a huge fan of the original game or anything, I found it boring more than anything else since it felt like the most RPG game that I've ever played...I mean, it's in the title.

It was similar with this one, and call me stupid or superficial, but definitely the revamped graphics and modern look helped me sit throught the entire thing a lot easier. I am aware there are also some quality of life improvements that make this one overall easier than the original, so that probably helped too.

But I did like it! I'd say it is very funny, charming and it has the right balance when it comes to difficulty and typical RPG grinding. But by far, the thing I like about this game the most is that it is short! So, that most certainly kept me motivated to keep playing and not just drop it again! The least time I spend playing another RPG, the better.

4/5 Would recommend. Liked it so much that ended up fighting Culex twice.

If Geno has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Geno has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Geno has only one fan then that is me. If Geno has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Geno, then I am against the world.

Hey look I finally managed to finish an RPG from the Mario series, that only took way too long! This remake is very interesting to me because of how faithful it is to the original, for better and for worse. I never played the original, but this was even obvious for someone like me. There are just little things here and there. Platforming with no depth perception because of the asymmetric angle can be a little frustrating. The Bowser's Keep segment of the game goes on for a bit too long with too many battles that aren't even difficult in the slightest. Scenes that play out exactly the same as the original feel weird here, because the SNES game had the sprites animate in a way that let the player connect the dots on what was going on. With 3D models in HD animated exactly the same way, it just looks stilted and awkward, the first encounter with Bowser being a great example. To get one more negative out of the way, the game's performance isn't the best. There are a handful of specific areas where the game stutters and I did encounter slowdown here and there. One of these moments was when the final boss started which took me out of it a little bit.

Now onto the positives. I want to bring up the writing first off. This game is so creative and feels nothing like any other Mario game. Besides the Mushroom Kingdom and Bowser's Keep, every area in this game is something new and whacky you will never find anywhere else in this series, with so many fun characters as well. Speaking of characters, we've got two completely original ones as party members that never return after this game. As I said from the top, I absolutely love Geno. He's probably my favorite companion from any Mario game. He stands out so much, intentionally so because if his origin, but he still fits this world so well and I love his interactions with everybody, not to mention in battle he can just straight up shoot enemies. I unfortunately didn't use Mallow in my party all that much, but I still think he's a great character. It's nothing you or I haven't seen before in plenty of other stories, but he plays off everyone else in the party pretty well. I really enjoyed Nimbus Land because of Mallow's connection to its little storyline.
This is probably my favorite interpretation of Bowser ever. Future games really lean into the comedic aspect of his character, and that's still here for sure, but he also feels like a real person with emotions and goals. I love when you run into old minions of his who are afraid of angering him, but he tells them not to worry, it's nice. Peach is...not great honestly. I used her in my party a lot because her healing abilities are insane, but as a character she's not her Paper Mario self that's for sure. She's pretty one dimensional and I didn't really care for it.

I guess that just leaves the combat! My favorite aspect of this is that everyone has different attack animations with different timing for better damage, depending on what weapon you have equipped to them. Bowser has my favorites, from spinning and throwing a Chain Chomp at enemies to just straight up throwing Mario at them, great stuff. Every character has plenty of special moves they can use and it really feels like you need to be careful about which ones you use at what time. Not only do they have different timing or inputs to get the best results, but the strongest ones use a lot of mana and you definitely don't want to run out. The remake added a meter in battles that fills up when you successfully block attacks or land the input for better damage on your own attacks. When it's full, you can use a super move, and each party formation has their own unique one! Mario, Bowser, and Geno is my favorite one personally. You can also now swap out a party member if they become immobilized or if their HP runs out, which is a godsend. Mario has to remain in the party at all times though for some reason. Battles are pretty fun in this game! Boss battles especially kept me engaged and really thinking about what I was doing. It's nothing too complicated, it is a Mario game after all, but it's still a lot of fun.

And that sums up my thoughts on this game as a whole. It's not anything groundbreaking or super in-depth or anything like that. It's a simple, sweet, fun adventure that I could revisit anytime. I love this take on the Mario universe and there's nothing quite like it, and that makes it feel pretty special.

great remake, the game looks nice, no stupid changes, and you can change the soundtrack from the OG to the new one.

Very Fun RPG with weird platforming

Super Mario RPG, Miyamoto pleads guilty to drug trafficking.
A bag full of weed says he “bitch, let me blaze.”
he bellows from inside of hazy maze cave.

Everything a remake should be, and then some. The original Super Mario RPG on Super Nintendo was an influential title which directly inspired two other Mario RPG series from it and countless indie titles inspired by all three. This remake provides an excellent way for old fans and newcomers to experience the classic title in all it's glory.

The 3D models perfectly convey the charm and style of the SNES original's sprite art. The soundtrack consists of a series of excellent arrangements all lovingly done by the original game's composer, the legendary Yoko Shimomura. Pretty much every minute detail of the game was dedicated to modernizing the title while making all of it perfectly recognizable to fans of the original.

If you're looking to try Mario's first crack at a Role Playing Game, this game should definitely be on your list.

This is a remake of a game I didn't play. My only exposure to Mario RPG before this was Rawest Forest. It didn't disappoint, because this is absolutely my favorite of the many Mario RPG games. It's so unbelievably charming.

A fun game.

Fun characters, vibrant artstyle and nice story.

The gameplay while fun can feel a bit off. Timing attacks and defending can feel a bit weird at times.

Also, Smithy can rot.

Super Mario RPG Remake (Switch)

Good game, but absolutely the weaker of the Mario RPGs. Off the bat - it's a Mario RPG, so there is a certain level of quality going in. You can see how this is so different from an Intelligent Systems or Alpha Dream game, but the formula is there. Square dropping Nintendo for PS1 back in the day did wonders for the Mario RPG franchises, at least critically speaking. Unfortunately, it's more a curiosity and a blueprint than anything, though an interesting one at that.

The humor is stylistically much like Mario & Luigi, but the jokes are sparse and inconsistent that I almost wish they didn't bother. The enemy design is ok - new races are fun and there's some spins on classic Mario designs here and there, but unique characters and partners don't come close to the kind of thing you see in early Paper Mario. There's a bit too many bosses and they too often just come and go. But then you get someone like Valentina who is around for a whole chapter, claims to stick around after you beat her, but doesn't even have an alternate post-game fight let alone ever appear again. I'm glad there were some difficult optional bosses (and an extended ending for fighting them all), but they really are where I wish the original boss levels were at. The character customization is fun with some secret items, but overall it's overly simplistic combat becomes a bit too easy to steamroll.

All the good or mixed things aside, the minigames are just lame. Entirely break the pacing of the game and none of them are good in any way. Platforming challenges can be ok at times, but the perspective is so wonky that any time any precision is required, it is ruined.

Good game overall. An improvement over the original at the very least due to the clearer action commands. Due to its easy difficulty curve, length, linearity, and some extra side content (wish there was more to the post-game, but it's fun enough), it's enjoyable enough to consume and complete.

Very faithful remake of the original. Original was already easy, and they made it more easy with this remake. Overall this game is made by fans of the original for fans of the original. That's definitely the audience this game is marketed towards.

Pros:
1. The post game content is short but fun. It made me wish there was more. Culex 3D was hype. It's corny, but I thought it was so cool that he came back in 3D form for a rematch saying he's stronger.
2. It's nice for those who do not have the SNES copy of the game to be able to buy this instead of paying anywhere from 50-100 dollars for a copy from some collector online. Sure you can also pirate the original game for free, but at the same time that could be said of this Switch remake too.
3. The triple team moves are a nice addition, but not needed. It's just something extra you can do in the game to have more fun.
4. Being able to easily teleport to other parts of the map with a few buttons presses is a great quality of life change.
5. I view it as a pro, but others can view it as a con as it makes the game easier, but seeing an ! mark of when you can press a button to do well-timed attacks and blocks is a great quality of life change, as it lets the player know what they are messing up on if they do not get the timing down.

Cons:
1. This game is short, but that's no surprise to anyone who played the original. At the same time the game being short is also a nice thing, as many games nowadays overstay their welcome and become a chore to finish.

N/A
1. On this remake I feel like there should have been voice acted lines, as this remake just feels empty during its many cutscenes of text running across the screen. I understand it's a faithful remake and so they did not want to ruin it with bad voice acting, but there could be an option to turn it off if you don't like it.
2. Comparing this game to other games of 2023 it's definitely not as complex, which is a good or a bad thing depending on who you are.

I liked this game so much, even though I never played the original. It's a good starting point for beginners in turn-based RPGs, being very intuitive with easy-to-learn mechanics. Not to mention, the remake is so beautiful and faithful to the SNES version. The only issues are the strange timings with some enemies and occasional FPS drops.

El primer RPG de Mario. A pesar del PESIMO plataformeo (en serio, estas secciones son lo peor) y de que puede pecar de sencillo y no muy profundo, ha sido un viaje bastante entretenido con Mario y compañía.

Charming and filled with a ton of creative designs, fantastic music and animations, and an overall pleasant vibe. I enjoyed the way it would use classic Mario bits as meta jokes on the series. I enjoyed my 12ish hours with it enough even if it felt like it was actively wasting my time for at least a quarter of that.

One of the most faithful remakes ever made that should really set a standard for how all future remakes should be handled. The game was a lot shorter than I thought it would be but I still really enjoyed the experience.

Its overflowing with charm and funny gags throughout despite the new characters introduced being kinda skin-deep, I kinda wish they would've explored them more but I understand that this is supposed to be more of a fun adventure than a standard RPG story.

Combat is really fun and engaging but the timing for some attacks is a bit weird and the overworld platforming feels a tad clunky in some parts.

Overall I think this is an amazing game that I can see myself going back to in the future.

Turn-based combat isn't my favorite, but this was still a really enjoyable adventure with tons of humor, fun characters, great music, no grinding, lots of secrets to find, and beautifully detailed environments. My biggest gripe is that the UI is very generic and overly "modern"-looking.

I'm sorry, but this became a replacement for the original SNES. Can't go back to og version unless i want to get my nostalgia fix.

man what great amzing remake of super mario rpg on the super nintendo i was so happy this got a remake

Super Mario RPG is a fantastic remake of the original game that came out on the SNES in 1996 that stays faithful to its original source material. The charm of the original game came from its humour, world, iconic music & characters and their interactions with each other. The remake illustrates all these aspects with polished and refined graphics, and even adding some cut scenes to elevate the story and its characters.

The newly added mechanics to the battle system, such as the triple move attacks and splash damage, improves the pacing of the game but makes the game a little too breezy and lacks any sort of challenge. In saying that, the original was quite easy in terms of difficulty to begin with so you could say that this is a quality of life improvement. The simplicity is counter balanced by the difficulties of getting the timing correct with the action command prompts which keeps the battles somewhat engaging.

I grew up playing the original game and to be able to re-live the experience had me excited to play the game and it did not disappoint.

I still do however prefer the original (call me blinded by nostalgia).

Difficulty: Easy
100% Playthrough but no post-game playthrough.

Gameplay: 4/5
Narrative: 3/5
Art Direction/Graphics: 4/5
Music: 4.5/5
Overall: 4/5

Super Mario RPG has all the bones that would later make up Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi. With that comes with less depth in retrospect, however, the Switch version adds just the right polish to where its combat still feels good. The game's charm and dialogue has not shifted either, and remains honestly enjoyable rather than pure filler.

Truly the father of all the mario rpgs, all the things i love about paper mario and M&L series are here. While the gameplay was very simple and easy even for mario rpgs standards i had a blast with its charming quirky and funny world. This games walked so the others could run

It's very short and misses out on some of the cooler narratives that the other Mario RPGs have. I think also not having played the original definitely makes me appreciate this less... it's decent though! Had fun with it fs

The humor, relatively good pace, and good characterization unfortunately do not make up for the repetitive battles for me.

I'm not going to lie... this game doesn't hold much past nostalgia
