Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game on the NES is a blast from the past! While it doesn't match the arcade's visual punch, it captures the spirit of the beat-em-up perfectly. Shredder's kidnapped April again, so you gotta fight through tons of Foot Soldiers with your favorite turtle. It's simple, sometimes frustrating, but oh-so-satisfying, especially with a friend in co-op mode. A must-play for TMNT fans and anyone nostalgic for that old-school arcade feel.

this game starts out in a room that's on fire more games should start off in a room that's on fire

Technically played via the Cowabunga Collection on Nintendo Switch.

The first TMNT game on NES did not leave a good first impression for those heroes in a half-shell, especially when they were falling victim to insta-kill seaweed and bullshit difficulty.

Luckily this port of the arcade game is a better step in the right direction with much more fun gameplay that also manages to be fairly true to the original.

On top of that you also get some more levels that weren't in the arcade version making this a very enjoyable port of this decent beat em up.

This was THE game to play with friends right after school. Can’t even count the number of playthroughs, it was just the perfect game on NES. Probably better to play the arcade version now, but back in the early 90s, you played what you had. The beat em action was exactly what you’d think a Turtles game would be like.

Played through the Cowabunga collection. Not very good of a Beat Em' Up but still pretty fun.

It’s essentially the same as the original arcade TMNT game, except now there are more levels, different bosses, and it has inferior graphics and music, although that really can’t be faulted. As an expanded port of that original arcade game, it is actually pretty damn impressive, but all in all, it is still the original TMNT arcade game, which I already gave my thoughts on previously, so I can’t enjoy it too much more than I already do. Also, for some reason, Pizza Hut is advertised in the instruction manual, because if there is any business that specializes in the most overpriced, mid pizza of all time that I want to be sponsored in this game, it’s gotta be Pizza Hut.

Port #1

Pros: Multiplayer co-op arcade beat-em up fun, with a handful of interesting stages to rummage through. Perfect TMNT game that encapsulated the hyper fad of the late 80s/early 90s. Radical music, bodacious graphics, and whoa dudes!! Free Pizza Hut personal pan pizza included with the game! Cowabunga! A very impressive arcade port for the NES! The new levels that weren't in the arcade version keep things fresh too (those tiger paintings that come to life, yo!! So cool!)

Cons: Only two players, not four... understandable given NES's limitations. Limited range of moves and attacks can leave the experience a bit, grindy and monotonous, but the new levels and bosses keep ya going.

What it means to me: This was the very first game I was ever hyped for, the first time I remember seeing an ad for a game, and then not being able to wait for it! This was my favorite NES game as a kid, playing with my brothers, and feeling immersed in the world of Turtle Power!!

Decent beatem up that really makes good use of the NES hardware, but rather shallow and nothing to write home about.

Decent beatemup for the time.

Minor Introduction
Welcome to uhhhh…what is it…the fourth installment of this mini-marathon, courtesy of the cowabunga collection! This time, it’s our first port review, with the NES port of the original arcade game! Interested to see how they were able to do it, so let’s get started!

First Impressions
Consider me impressed. This is quite a faithful and commendable port of the arcade game, with NEW CONTENT on top of it all, while having its difficulty tweaked to not be as hard. It’s still very hard don’t get me wrong, but it’s not the level of the actual arcade game.

Gameplay
The gameplay has basically been carried over one-to-one. Basic combat, basic and not many combos. The only difference is that instead of a dedicated special button, you now have to press a+b to perform the special attack and the coop has been reduced to just two players (probably because the console would kill itself with more than two players at once). The main additions are in the form of two actually decent levels and three new bosses, with tora, shogun and a new baxter form, which are appreciated additions. The best change is that the difficulty has been tweaked to make it a bit easier than the original arcade game, which helps a lot. Otherwise, the praises and complaints remain. The combat has a decent loop while playing coop, but can get repetitive. The game controls well and the hitboxes are good and in general, the gameplay is as you would expect from a faithful port, now in NES format.

Story
The story is the same outline as the arcade title, just changed somewhat to accommodate the new levels and bosses. Shredder kidnaps april, the turtles go out and save her and then defeat him in the technodrome. I sound like a broken record repeating the same story, so I won’t dive much into it. Just an excuse for level transitions and nothing more. It’s faithful to the arcade game’s story and accomplishes its job.

Presentation
Obviously the presentation is bound to be worse than the arcade game, but it’s actually pretty good for NES standards. The voice lines and dialogue didn’t make the cut (to be expected), but the rest are still here. The spritework and animation is good for NES standards, the music is actually great, comprised of really good 8-bit compositions of the arcade music, while also featuring two brand new original tracks for the sewer and cheapstake stages (which also sound great) and the sound design is the same 8-bit crunchy goodness you would expect. Great presentation work all around.

Negatives
Unfortunately, the negatives remain the same as well…mostly. While the difficulty has been toned down, it is still hard as shit and some tricks of the arcade game remain there, so you better have lives cheat codes on the ready if you ain’t patient. The bosses are also the same type of game design…brick walls with counters. They’re more tolerable here, but the general bad design still remains.

Final Thoughts
It is the arcade game on NES with more content added, most of which is good, while also being a faithful port at the same time. That alone actually makes it a bit better than the arcade game and since I played that on two-people coop, the coop here being reduced to two people only did zero damage to me. So yea, take the score i gave to the arcade version and add one more score to it here (3.5/5 coop and 2.5/5 solo)

Really is just the arcade game.

Fun to revisit in the Cowabunga collection, but was clearly outmoded by Turtles in Time. Still neat for the time

this was great another great game on the nes.

Nice follow-up to TMNT on NES, but lacks variety on all levels, especially in - anachronistic, granted - comparison to the brilliant Turtles in Time on SNES. Too repetitiv, hitboxes and framing unfair. Enjoyable for one playthrough.

This game is still so good. I think it's better than the actual arcade version, because it has more levels.

A very fun NES version of the Arcade game! I really enjoyed this one, the added levels are very cool too, you can tell they were added later for here but that doesn't matter cuz they're really good and don't really stick out in a bad way. 4.5 stars because TMNT3 is better.

Infinite Lives Cheat used.

the only problem is being too short

It is just way too repetitive. You don't have many interessting movement options and attacks except for the one hopping attack that does more damage. This is objectively better than the first but also much more boring which in turn makes it actually worse

No nastolgia for this one. This game is boring, overly long and just not fun at all. Beat em ups get boring fast anyway, but unlike TMNT IV, this game does not change anything up in any of the levels. The graphics are so dull and bland. Way too much grey is used for the sprites.

Plays alright, looks good, & the new stages are neat but I feel the later bosses and slightly lesser controls making certain enemies a pain are...well, pretty annoying.

sure an arcade game ported to home consoles with new content sounds fun
and then you remember that the nes is a lot weaker than your typical arcade cabinet from the late 80s
and also consoles dont take coins so you're stuck with the arcade difficulty but without the benefit of continuing where you left off if you die 3 times by inserting a quarter
