"Let's make a cartoon with a great setting, lovable characters, and amazing writing"
"But sir, we're a video game company"
"Shit, I guess throw some obtuse puzzles in between"
Normally I'm not a fan of "video games should be games" arguments, but many point and click/adventure games work much better than this. This is one of the few games I think should be definitively not have been a game.
That being said, please make a Grim Fandango Netflix series

it shone, pale as bone,
as i stood there, alone,
and thought to myself,
how the moon
that night, cast its light
on my heart's true delight
and the reef
where her body
was strewn.
playing without a guide open seems dangerous and ahistorical to me. amazing, iconic game, one of the all-time greats. can't stress enough, though, that you should be looking up the puzzle solutions whenever you're stuck for more than two minutes. that's how it's meant to be played!

Grim Fandango is a cool, creative game, but jesus the moon logic in play here really stands out. Puzzles are especially obtuse, and there is a tonal dissonance that games like Monkey Island don't have. The moon logic feels at home in the wacky cartoon pirate-land that Guybrush Threepwood inhabits, but not here.

The vibes are immaculate, I have to give it that. The narrative and aesthetic are pretty enjoyable despite the rushed ending. But the main problem I have with this is just the meander feeling that this game has. While I love how expressive the character's dialogue can be, it tends to mask a lot of hints or just takes its place entirely, making me just be completely lost super easily and a lot of puzzles involving a lot of running around get confusing really quick because of this. A lot of the puzzles make sense on paper, which is rare for an adventure game like this, but the way it's executed just kinda leaves a lot of matches really hazy. This game needed a bit more for me, but I'm sure it's clear by now that I'm a dumbass and most people have a lot more fun with this game, so definitely take it on if you're up for it, you'll at least enjoy the visuals and the fun story, guaranteed.
