in the past

I remember it being fun and the story conclusion being neat but man maybe I should revisit these because I forget a lot.

MMZ4 is more of less the same as what you'd expect from the last 3 titles in the series. It ditches a lot of the weapons that you might be familiar with especially from 1 and 2 such as the Chain Hook and Spear etc., in favor for the Z-Knuckle which is an interesting and somewhat gimmicky mimic system item that is used to steal powers on the spot after killing an enemy with the Z-Knuckle.

Aside from this you can expect the exact same gameplay as it was from the previous entries which is more than serviceable. Much of the story is hard to recall for me after so long however I do remember enjoying it and learning about the Resistance faction that plays an important role in the fight. This game is the last of the Z saga and Ultimately Zero's curtain call before the ZX series, and I more than enjoyed the feelings left with me on the ending.

I wasn't really feeling this one as much as the other games. The new mechanics they added here aren't all that interesting in my opinion and the crafting system feels unnecessary. I may go back and finish it, but I doubt it'll be any time soon.

MMZ4 is the ending to the ongoing saga of Zero himself. It was going to be hard to top Zero 3, a game that I had nothing but glowing praise for and generally perfected the gameplay loop of the series. How does the grand finale fare?

Honestly? It's awesome. It definitely deserves the title of finale. The gameplay loop is a little weaker than before - the weapon selection is pretty uninteresting and the Z Knuckle just kinda blows. It has some interesting usages but I ended up using it very rarely. Furthermore, the crafting system - just like in previous games - feels like a waste. I didn't use it even once. Generally, just like previous entries, I found the game struggled to explain some core mechanics and features, like how to get EX abilities. However, the core gameplay loop is fantastic. It's good old Zero combat with clean level design, mostly well designed and memorable bosses and incredibly satisfying sound design. It plays like a dream. No major improvements from Zero 3 - but the core is intact, and it is glorious.
The story of Zero 4 is also super awesome, as is the final boss that tops it off. I don't want to spoil it if you somehow don't know - but it solidifies Zero as one of the coolest video game characters ever. Be sure to check it out! I really loved where they went with the character and the MMZ universe in this one.

There is nothing more to say, really. Mega Man Zero 4 is the conclusion the series deserved, and as much as I really did enjoy these games - even through my blind rage of dying a million times - I will be sad to see Zero go. I understand there are ZX and ZX Advent, but it won't be the same. Make sure to play this fantastic series, it is by far the best Mega Man has to offer.

why did the ending make me cry mega man isn’t supposed to have good story like this wtf

This and x5 are games I love that I can shittalk to the moon and back

It's pretty good

Since it'd be almost impossible to improve on Zero 3, Zero 4 instead opts to completely change multiple aspects of the series with really mixed results. Firstly, there's the Zero Knuckle, a new weapon that lets you take the enemies weapons and use it for yourself, it's used to get a few hidden materials but aside from that, it sucks. Its poor range meant I never used it over the Z-Saber, the weapons you get with it have really limited ammo and ngl, It really made me miss the Shield Boomerang and Rod weapons from the previous games. The game also changes the Cyber Elf system, by completing stages your cyber elf levels up which allows you to equip various perks and by feeding crystals to the cyber elf, you unlock better abilities to equip. I'm not really a fan of this system since you're really limited on what abilities you can equip unless you go out of your way to grind for crystals. That's right, GRIND. Why is it here, it was the worst part of Zero 1, Zero 2 made it more it way more bearable, Zero 3 removed it completely and 4 decided to bring it back to Zero 1 territory. Why? Crystals aren't the only thing you'll be grinding for though, if you want parts like the double jump or auto-charging, you'll have to find specific chips that drop from enemies and then use those chips to craft those items. It's another pointless implementation that complicates something that was so simple in Zero 3. One new change I can praise though is the way EX Skills are handled. You can get them all fairly easily if you just decide to go through a stage with unfavourable weather that causes some stage hazards to appear like the wind pushing you in Pegasolta's level. For once, I got a lot of use out of them with my favourite being Heat Genblem's weapon. The game also removes the Elemental Chips from the previous games and instead has boss weaknesses tied to the Cyber elf abilities and EX Skills. It does make the bosses more challenging. Craft, Heat Genblem and Pegasolta are tricky but fun but other fights just suck. Noble Mandrago barely tries to hurt you and Tech Kraken spends most of the time shooting the slowest projectiles in the series.

As for the level design, I don't care much for it. Most of Teck Kracken's stage is just a boring maze where enemies cheap shot you from underneath, most of Noble Mandrago's stage is just you hitting vines that don't fight back, Cockapetri's stage has those super annoying moving blocks that one hit kill you and Titanion's level has some of the worst enemy placement in the entire series. The story on the other hand is brilliant, seeing the humans viewpoint on everything that’s transpired was really interesting and I was on the edge of my seat during the climax to the Zero series. It works so well as not just an ending to the Zero series, but as an ending to Megaman as a whole.

Despite how negative I come off in this review. It’s still Megaman Zero at its core and it still controls very smoothly, has pretty solid music (though 3s is way better) and an engaging plot. But ultimately, I prefer Zero 2 and 3 way more, and I think I might even prefer Zero 1 for nostalgia reasons. The game changes a lot, but rarely does it improve anything.

Mega Man Zero 4 is surprisingly different from its predecessors. While the general gameplay remains, there are several changes to everything surrounding it. First, the Rod and Shield weapons are removed and replaced by the Z Knuckle, a fist weapon that lets you copy enemy abilities (it's quite fun actually). Second, the cast is greatly changed, with most characters from Zero 1 to 3 NOT returning (what even happened to Harpuia and co?). Third, sub-systems like the Cyber Elf and parts system are heavily modified, for the worse IMO.

In terms of level/boss design, I feel Z4 is a little behind Z2 and Z3 mainly since stages are pretty short and sometimes gimmicky. They're still good though.

Overall, this game is good but not as good as the others in the franchise. Still recommended though.

this one was my favorite for a while i think, but i don't remember anything from it so whatever, still good, ending is pretty good imo

Mega Man Zero 4 is a strange game. It makes a number of design decisions that I disagree with, but the things it carries over from the previous games are handled really well.

Zero 4's biggest problem is that the very different way it handles cyber elves and chips leads to a fairly grindy experience if you want to be at your best. The chip system especially is guilty of this, crafting doesn't really work well for me in a case where you need really specific parts to actually get equipment. This is disappointing, since one of the biggest things I loved about Zero 3 is how it eliminates the need for grinding.

I really like how the level design and bosses were handled, some of the best are almost as fun as the best of Zero 3's, but I think it's far less consistent as there's some real stinkers among both of them.

Story-wise, this is probably my favorite entry in the whole series. I really like how the game is generally themed around nature and the environment. The core of the story is about protecting the rebirth of nature into the world and letting it thrive, and the gimmick of its difficulty selection is based around the weather. It's an interesting motif that ties into the X-onward games' themes about the relationship between reploids and humanity. The entire finale with Ragnarok is the best conclusion I could think of for this series, it's a fantastic sendoff to the whole journey.

I suppose I'll conclude this by talking about my general thoughts on the whole series. These games are incredibly fun, Zero 3 especially, and are really well done stories, but most of them have some things holding them back from reaching their full potential. I'm still incredibly glad I played this series, and I'll gladly revisit them sometime.

Hi Mellon: The Game

The conclusion to the saga that started with Mega Man (1987), and a damn good one at that.

Gets better on a second playthrough.

What a great way to cap off the Zero series! Once again, Inti Creates provides a solid and challenging action platformer with good-ass music and what I consider to be a top-tier story. I’m not going to spoil anything here, but the plot of this series is concluded in just… a really good way. That said, I gotta put this just a little lower than Zero 3 because there were a few small moments that weren’t fun. Also, stealing enemies’ weapons with the Zero Knuckle was neat, but I kinda stopped using it because those weapons never felt particularly useful. I could probably write more, but I’m really tired right now so my brain’s a bit fried. But yeah, Zero 4’s a very good game in every respect!

Taking down the final boss for the first time and the conclusion that follows are lodged permanently in the front of my mind.

I definitely liked this game the most out of all four games. It felt the most streamlined and absent of most of the annoying gimmicks or ideas incorporated throughout the series. That stuff was cool though, and there's definitely some stuff noticeably absent in this game, but I won't get into that. I just think this is a solid game all around.

I guess I'll use this to say my thoughts on the Zero series overall.

I think it was interesting watching the games evolve as I played. It was a continuation of the X series I wasn't entirely expecting, and there were elements I liked and disliked. The cyber-elf system felt initially frustrating, but once you understand how it all works, it gets better. I appreciate how it was improved upon in each game (might be subjective).

Zero was a treat to play as. The controls felt much more fluid and fast than most of the X games, and blasting through enemies with the variety of Zero's weapons was great. I especially loved using the beam saber, because shredding through enemies with it just feels great. The touch of enemies getting sliced in half when you kill them is great too.

Level design could be hit or miss. I think it was mostly solid, but I don't appreciate the spike fetish some levels had.

The story was kind of "eh," I guess. The themes it explored were new for the series, but they never go into too much depth with anything. I wish Zero got more development, because most of the time he's just a stoic badass who seemingly isn't fazed by anything. This is such a far cry from the X series. I haven’t played the ZX games yet, but I hope we get more into story stuff concerning this far future of the Mega Man series.

Overall, I liked these games. They had some problems, but it's good and definitely more consistent than the X series. They aren't too long either, so it's easy to get through and even replay them.

This one wasn’t as good as the last game, and the bosses were like twice as hard as usual, but wow, what an ending. Fuck that final boss by the way that was atrocious.

its the fourth one. mega man zero, four. its not the zero 3 two that i wanted, although it’s the fourth zero game that we needed. i’m rereviewing this because this is the only zero game i haven’t expressed my current thoughts on regarding replays. also i went on vacation and brought my ds plus zero collection and ended up replaying all the games for the millionth time lol so this is fresh in my mind.

this game occupies a weird space in my head. like, yeah i really enjoy it but i’m not sure how to stack it up against the others due to its more lackluster motives. its the perfect emotional tie up for the series however gameplay-wise it’s a bit confused. the classic eight stage level select seems to be there just for the sake of being different than the previous titles. ironically on replays i end up doing a similar order of stages because most of the bosses just aren’t that fun to fight against without certain ex skills that i want from other bosses. heat genblem (da turtle) was the only boss i fully enjoyed due to his fun patterns along with weil phase 1. the other bosses did things that you had to deal with, while these two had patterns that you could accurately form more of a strategy based on.

i think inti realized they had made a masterpiece with zero 3 and didn’t know where to go from there, so they tried to incorporate new things to differentiate it from zero 3. in retrospect, i’m not disappointed that this game is less like zero 3 in design simply because i think another zero 3 would be boring. if every zero game was like zero 3 they would all be great games yeah but there wouldn’t be much to identify specifics between them. each game has that special quirk or technical intention that makes it a recognizable entry in the series (minus the story/graphics). i feel like zero 4 is kind of the sonic cd of these games. does weird shit for the sake of doing weird shit. weather system is cool but the challenges added to stages feel artificial and more so challenging your endurance rather than skill. i prefer the old method of getting ex skills because it’s reliant more on actual skill than some bullshit obstacle tacked on to stages. the cyber elf system was downgraded to be…simpler? not sure what they were going for. regardless it serves its purpose and works effectively. my only gripe is that effects don’t stack which most would assume to be the standard.

all in all, i seriously do love this game even with my frequent frustration with it lol. these complaints aren’t ‘minor’ per say, they just display z4’s quality in comparison to z3 which set the bar really fuckin high. i love playing this as much as z1 and z2 due to its fundamental and mechanical roots. shit feels good to control. collective and accurate usage of ex skills is as fun as ever despite removal of the shield boomerang. also the music fucking bangs EVEN on gba. i will defend the gba ost until i die i really like listening to it. the cd versions are obviously godlike and i prefer them though.

“I don’t ever recall calling myself a hero, I am Mega Man Zero 4.” - Zero mega man, 2005

PLAYED VIA ZERO/ZX COLLECTION ON NINTENDO SWITCH

I probably shouldn't have called Mega Man Zero 3 the best game in this series because it turns out the actual best game in this series is Mega Man Zero 4. For the most part, this game is the complete refinement of everything that came before. The level design is at it's best in this game, even getting a little bit ambitious. The elemental chips are gone, replaced by EX Weapons so long as you complete the stages in "hard mode", which made exploiting boss weakness with this a lot more exciting than just simply slapping on an element into the slot and letting loose a charge shot. The Elf System is also at it's best, streamlining the satellite system from the previous game, although a slight grinding issue still remains if you want to max it out.

If there's one negative i have to say about the game, it's the completely dumb crafting system that i never used. You can collect parts to craft chips except it's completely unintuitive and you do not need it whatsoever. But overall, this is definitely one of Inti Creates' best. In fact, i think it stands toe-to-toe with Azure Striker Gunvolt 2, which i believe to be Inti Creates' current best game and the only reason I will give Zero 4 a point lower than Gunvolt 2 is only because Gunvolt 2 is one of my personal favorite games of all time and while i do like this game, i don't think it makes that list. At least not right now, who knows, i may revisit it in the future and change my mind.

A game of weird, frustrating lows, but some of the best moments of the entire series in return.
