I'm convinced people will go crazy for anything as long as it has turn based battles.

I was deeply disappointed that there is no real interaction between the main characters during the game. I craved this and would likely have sunk dozens of hours into this game if it had had it. As it stands, I played about 9 hours and had a great time and decided I didn't want to play any more.

The story isn't as generic as everyone makes it out to be, sure it has tropes and clichés, but at least I havent seen anything THAT similar to any of the stories. more character interaction could've been great, although difficult to implement in such an open worldy game, but the game sure makes up for it with a satisfying and addictive combat system and a gorgeous artstyle.

This game is really remarkable. The music, sprite art, and battle system are all second to none. The 2.5D world is absolutely gorgeous. The only thing holding this game back from being a 5-star game was the cliché storylines.

so, this game is gorgeous! the soundtrack is wonderful. i liked all of the characters. their introductions were all lovely. the problem is that it's... pretty much just that. the combat is fine. repetitive. the full stories are weak and imo the game suffers GREATLY from having a party system but... no party interactions? their stories don't matter in regards to each other at all. it's just... bland, save for the visual and audible experience. it's sad. if they do a sequel, i hope they implement party interactions as that'll EASILY boost it for me.

people give this game a lot of shit but honestly it was super fun. yes the writing is boring and bland, but everything else does make up for it

if you like falling asleep you might enjoy this game

"love this game" says man who refuses to finish it

fun game, lacks party interactions

Excellent gameplay, a beautiful world and fun characters. The story is the weakest part and the rest of the game struggles to not get bogged down by the lackluster story.

Enjoyable combat with a gorgeous art style and music but the sheer length of the game is too much for me. Also kinda disappointed by the lack of party interactions.

easily the best battle system in any turn-based rpg. But you gotta connect the stories my dudes!

Octopath Traveler is a lot of fun for the first three chapters. The biggest complaint I had up to that point was the lack of party interactions. I'm used to Tales of games, where there's a heavy emphasis on the party members interacting, so I was disappointed to see there wasn't much of that at all. With that said, once you hit chapter four, the difficulty spike was absolutely unbearable for me. I put the game down and only returned months later with a guide in hand. I liked figuring out my own strategies and party combinations, and the sudden spike in difficulty basically requiring certain job combinations was such a disappointment that I still feel the sting of it. I want to love this game so much more, but unfortunately I just can't get past that and I have no desire to replay it with that in mind.

This a fun RPG, I’d say I’m looking forward to see all it has to offer.

Octopath Traveler is a beautiful, SNES-inspired RPG that excels in everything except story. Combat, visuals, music (damn that music), everything is incredible except story. I admire the unique take on story structure, but it ultimately results in half-baked stereotypical stories that rarely manage to exceed expectations. Ultimately, a great tech demo for what could've been an even greater game.
4 Trons

Incredible battle system, visual style, and soundtrack, and in its best moments it shows how much fun you can get by putting JRPG trappings around smaller-scale stories. Tressa and Alfyn's stories both suffer from having to pull a final boss out of nowhere, but they were also both fascinating to play through as a "main story" for an RPG. I am, however, completely baffled by how hard they made it to see the party banter and by pretty much everything to do with the final dungeon, from its esoteric unlock requirements to its massive difficulty spike paired with a lack of save points.

An absolute failure of a game on every level. Eight terrible stories in one, each with the same dull, slow combat. The Action 52 of JRPGs.

The game is gorgeous and the music is amazing but this game falls flat for me. After about 20 hours I felt like I had seen everything the game had to offer. There's no real party interactions which is a strange choice for a JRPG but I can live with that. My big issue with the game is the combat. After a while it feels like the game is just combat and nothing else, and with fights later taking way too long I just didn't want to play this.

It goes on and on and on and on, I gave up after seeing how the characters 'interacted' with each other

way too grindy if you want to use the characters you want to use and not the ones best for the job

Is this game perfect? God no, the structural problems are something that kept me from enjoying it for the longest time, the grinding can get tiring, if you like me don't want to deal with constantly swapping characters. I get why people don't like it, hell, it took me three tries before it clicked with me. But when it did, hoooly fuck this game became one of my all time favourites immediately, the boost system makes combat so much more engaging than other turn-based JRPGs, the soundtrack is one of my all time favourites, I love the characters and while their individual stories are simple, some of them really ended up playing with my emotions at certain moments.

Do I get why some people dislike this game? Absolutely, and I will never blame anyone for that. But it has a very special place in my heart, warts and all.

Pretty cool game. Really like the idea of the game, where you have 8 different characters and you travel across the world meeting them and going through their stories. Want to say I was a fan of at least half the cast character wise, OST is great, enjoy the fact that most characters have a unique action associated to them (my favourite one being H'aanit's duel a.k.a beat the SHIT out of this random guy) and I had a lot of fun with the combat, especially with Primrose and her Bewildering Grace!

The reason I dropped this game, despite enjoying it mostly, was the fact I had hit 40ish hours in, was leveled ten levels higher than the highest zones available and still had to go through at least 4 chapters each with 6 other characters. Because of how the world works, completing the early chapters for a character means going through low level zones, which meant that I was a level 50ish party going against level 20 guys...for hours...because I needed to play through most people's chapter 2 segments...and by that point the combat kinda became trivial and the little bits of story and character development unfortunately weren't enough to keep me hooked on playing it through all the inessential combat.

It's a shame, cus the base of this game is really cool and would happily finish a more refined version of this game.

I wish I liked this video game

Music is godlike tho

There are some worthwhile criticisms about the structure of the game, but honestly, they did not bother me that terribly! I liked the individual characters' stories and they did KIND of connect, even if you had to piece the connections together yourself. I think the biggest criticisms I have are that there should have been more party interactions that were easier to find and that the... super secret true final boss that kind of tells you how all the characters' stories intertwine is really hard to both track down and actually fight... but anyway! I'd love to see another Octopath game that refines the formula more. The gameplay is fun as heck and doesn't need that much tweaking to be great, so it's mostly just the story structure that needs handling. Oh and the music rules.

It looks so good, it tickles my nostalgia so much, but the pacing is drrrrrrrrreadful and the grind expectations are ridiculous

Really charming game and graphics with a phenomenal OST. I found the combat system interesting and engaging. However, the game is very grinding heavy, with the level scaling between each character’s chapter increasing exponentially (though the game is nice enough to tell you the recommended party level for each chapter). The traveling party of 8 also do have character banter moments, but don’t integrate into each other’s stories, which takes away from the “traveling party” feel.
