As a follow-up to Crystal this was very disappointing at the time, especially prior to the release of Colosseum & Fire Red/Leaf Green with the limited classic Pokémon available. As a stand alone adventure I still find it unremarkable but it was not my first Pokémon game so I have no rose tinted glasses for it. Emerald makes this game redundant and is in my opinion an overall better way to experience this region, recommended to play that version instead.
Everyone gives the IGN dude a hard-time for "too much water" but he was absolutely right! Half of Hoenn is either water, or land that you have to access by crossing long stretches of water. Everyone agrees caves suck because of the seemingly endless random encounters, but don't mind water when the encounters are just as frequent and just as unavoidable.
That being said it's still a super strong entry in the series and an important piece of Pokemon's first 3 core generations.

It isn't really that different from Pokémon Sapphire, which I have played many times, so this playthrough is mostly just because. I guess I will judge it based on the differences, and I think the roster in this game is pretty great. Maybe even better than in Sapphire; I certainly prefer Zangoose over Seviper, and Shiftry over Ludicolo for instance. So, if you wanna know my opinion, go to my Sapphire review, it basically still holds true.
My first GBA Pokémon game. I remember playing it for hours and hours, my savefile had more than 600 hours registered! Discovering Hoenn was amazing and always chose Torchic. I still have my Blaziken from my Ruby, it's a very old and beautiful piece of data that currently lies in my Ultra Moon. Of course later I got Emerald and prefered with that, it was just better, but Ruby remains as a classic alongside Sapphire. I sold my Ruby when I was like 16, I don't know why... I really regret that and I am considering getting it again just to have all GBA games from these series and running another playthrough in wonderful Hoenn every now and then...
