The game has aged but it's still pretty fun and 100% still playable by 2024 standards.
The story and characters are kinda whatever and take a backseat in favour of the gameplay which is pretty good. I felt like Dante doesn't have a ton of different options in terms of combat even after getting upgrades and more weapons however his base moveset feels satisfying enough to keep you entertained for the short runtime.
I had a couple problems specifically with the repeated boss encounters, problems with targeting, and lack of teaching the player game mechanics. You fight ever boss 3 times and it gets old real quick especially against the nightmare boss the can take forever if you're not careful. My targeting problems are also with the nightmare boss, you have to hit these things on the wall to make the boss vulnerable but most of the time Dante will turn around and try and hit the boss and it was really frustrating. When I started the game I felt like I was playing it wrong because the game doesn't explain what it wants from you during combat so you just gotta figure it out and they could turn new players away.
Overall I enjoyed the game despite those flaws most likely due to its short run time. I love short replayable games and Devil May Cry fits that bill perfectly.

It's an important game, but it's in a genre obsolescence limbo that makes it hard to seriously recommend (just not as hard as DMC2). I think for those curious about experiencing the franchise in its entirety, it's worth starting here, as it can be said to be a quite solid game for its time, and then progressing in release order to avoid disappointment with crude gameplay and level design that weren't as refined yet.
Holy old game, combat is fun, but god damn starting a level over from the beginning just from dying is ridiculously backwards, I pray to god they remake this game, cause not having to restart from the start of a mission + no more finger breaking E & I + the game might actually look good it'd be an overall plus.
That being said, I played on easy, or easy auto same shit, still had a good time, wish I could have actually played on normal but restarting the level from the start is a ridiculous amount of tedium I don't want to invest myself into.
Give it a go, game was pretty fun, would recommend to others.

I have a much stronger appreciation for it on replay; for being one of the first games of its kind, it's amazing how much this game gets right, but also it's one of those games that has so much depth I'm still learning more about it years after my initial playthrough. The camera still sucks unfortunately, but I think anyone who likes action games needs to play this.
im sure the franchise improves from here and this was just their humble beginnings, but this game sucks. the entire game takes place within a single location that isnt visually pretty or interesting, the music is forgettable and at certain points they forget to include music entirely, and the combat really isnt engaging until you occasionally shoot enemies out of range. the difficulty spikes are also insane, but devil trigger basically plays the game for you so its a non-issue. final boss sucks as well, all around didnt have much fun but it made me laugh a few times
