I played this as a multiplayer campaign with my friend. It was very engaging and fun for the most part, with the different vehicles, weapons, enemy types, and challenges constantly keeping the playthrough fresh. That is, until Mission 7 where the latter half of the game isn't as sharply designed, with long repetitive sections of shooting through groups of enemies in a hall or simply retreading an old level. Plus, the Flood enemies can sometimes feel a bit too damage-sponge-y and take really long to take down.
The feeling of the earlier levels, the story, and the high of racing to the end in the Warthog was such a blast though, that I need to give this game credit for it. I'd recommend playing this with a friend, undoubtedly.

Having never played Halo growing up, I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy the series with no nostalgia. Fortunately Halo: Combat Evolved proved that good game design is timeless.
There was something oddly heavy about the movement that took a while to get used to, but other than that the game was a blast to play from the beginning. Shooters live and die on the feel of the guns and every gun in Halo is unique and gratifying. Except the assault rifle. That one just sucks.
Most of the levels are pretty solid. Unfortunately the game has a lot of maze-like interiors with identical looking corridors which I struggled to navigate and often I wandered in circles for a frustrating amount of time trying to figure out how to progress. And while I don't think reusing levels is automatically bad, I didn't think it was done in a way that added to the game and it just felt like padding, possibly because the developers started running out of time.
I do think this game is subject to a bit of overhype from fans, but I don't believe it's overrated. I think you just had to be there at the time to feel the transformative effect it had on console shooters. Without that context, it might be puzzling why it's so revered when nothing it does seems that crazy today. I wasn't there, so I'll never really get it. But ultimately it's still a great shooter that stands the test of time.

Halo: Combat Evolved is a game I definitely felt like I need to play at some point just do to how massive the series' impact has been on gaming and just culture in general, but I can't help but feel waiting 23 years to play it may have hurt the experience a little. There wasn't much in it that felt special compared to what i have played before, but again that is probably due to the influence this had on other games that came after it. Looking at Halo through the lens of it coming out in 2001 I can see what made it so special. It just didn't do a lot for me other than be a decent shooter. I know that the series will get even better from here on out so I am excited to play those at some point as well.
Ill say it playing the Master Chief collection version of this was hell. It seems like it was switching difficulties for every level and almost like i was playing on veteran for library level? Im not sure but almost every memory i have of this game was super aggravating, even the last section with the atv is so cool in concept but its so damn narrow that i kept crashing into shit. I dont even like playing this game looking back on it but there is a lot i admire.
Reviewing this in 2024 shows its age a bit but there's still redeeming qualities. The campaign's first half is still a pleasure to go through. The weapon sandbox and enemy design hold a soft place in my heart. However, the second half can be a bit of a pain. The Library and Two Betrayals is a nightmare blunt rotation.
Multiplayer is where not even nostalgia tinted glasses can help it. This has just aged so poorly. Genuinely more than half the weapon sandbox feels pointless in 4v4. However, Big Team Battle is where I think this game shines the most
An oldie but still has some good points to it
