Staying up tonight to get Paper Mario Sticker Star from the eShop at midnight! So should you!

Day 25: Morale growing low. Still hunting for Wiggler segments. I enter yet another dark-poison-pond-and-tree-trunk-with-Snifits-and-Ninjis themed level. What was once scoffed at for being the same dull Mario grassland and desert levels have now become bittersweet memories. I no longer remember the sun as I take 2 more damage by accidentally running into yet another poison puddle. God help me. God help us all.

The beginning of the safe era of Paper Mario games.
I remember having a nice time playing this game, mainly because of the music tracks and the funny "real life items" gimmick, but everything else is a huge step back from what was established in the series.

- Bland story (Save princess peach from bowser, no catches at all).
- Great combat system replaced with a mediocre, sticker dependant one.
- All NPCs and enemies are normal toads and goombas, koopas, etc.
- Kersti's existence as a whole.
- No creative world themes (Grass, Snow, Jungle and so on...)

At its core, Paper Mario: Sticker Star was stripped away from what made prior games in the series so great in the first place, both creativity and the RPG element (a.k.a from all dignity). You know it's bad when even the Beta/E3 footage of the game looks more interesting than what we actually got.

Paper Mario at it's absolute worst, maybe even Nintendo at its worst. The tedium, the backtracking, the convoluted mandatory puzzles that are near impossible without a guide lest you want to spend hours running around picking up random stickers hoping they solve the puzzle. It has bad gameplay, bad story, bad characters.

I'm not someone who just jumped on a hate bandwagon either, I've played the game to it's end and collected every thing sticker to unlock the secret sound test/music room it has. And yeah it's as bad as they say, maybe even worse than they say if you experience world 2 and 3 for yourself.

The only things this game does right is it's visuals which look really nice and it's music that is surprisingly good.

Overall could not recommend this game to anyone. It has very little to nothing for a long running Paper Mario fan, and any non Paper Mario fan looking for a simple Nintendo turn based 3DS game to play have the Mario & Luigi 3DS Titles right there.

This game was decent! But from this point on is definitely where I lose interest in the paper Mario series

Extremely boring, monotonous, and an overall waste of time.

As a huge fan of the Mario RPG series of games, I was elated to find out a new title was coming to the 3DS. However, after playing the game, I couldn't help but feel frustrated by the lack of direction and thought put into the puzzles, bored with the lackluster plot, and tired of exploring the very cookie-cutter world.

I highly suggest you avoid this game. While there is competence in that there is technically a game here, there is nothing of worth for your time. It's the worst kind of game, not one that is good or so bad that it is interesting to play or fun to mess around in.

This game is bad, but it’s not “whine about it for 10 years” bad.

not as bad as rabid fans would have you believe but also certainly nothing special

Shin Megami Tensei 4
Link's Between Worlds
Final Fantasy Type 0
Resident Evil Revelations
Monster Hunter Ultimate 3.

The weirdest Paper Mario game to date. It had some cool ideas but fails to pull them off in almost every regard. Good levels are few and far between. It almost feels like the game WANTS you to have a bad time with how many malicious choices the game developers made against that go directly the player. Cryptic hints for required items, no rhyme or reason for decisions, malicious game design at its worst. Not worth playing at all without a guide. You WILL become stuck.

The best part about this game is the sounds it makes when you walk.

i really hate this game, as a kid i could never past anything without a playthrough

It’s a been a couple months now, and the more I think about it, the more I actively dislike this game. I still don’t think it’s the irredeemable, franchise-killing monstrosity that Paper Mario fans claim it is, but as I continue to progress through The Origami King, this game’s problems become a lot more blatant. The combat is pointless, most levels are boring (Enigmansion and Snifit-or-Whiffit are still certified bangers, though), and there’s loads of tedious padding and horribly telegraphed puzzles littered throughout.

I'm rating it this high because it's part of the reason bug fables exists

Played this at my grandmas funeral i wonder if she would have liked the endearing story of paper mario and the sticker star

This game is so weird because most bad games are bad due to jank or lack of polish or whatever, y'know just normal stuff like that. But everything here feels very intentional. The shitty unintuitive sticker system and combat designed around it. The "puzzles" which either involve hitting something random with a hammer, finding some random "thing" sticker that the game likely doesn't tell you about, or some other random obscure solution (intentionally sink in quicksand lmao). The obscene amount of backtracking and level redoing. The bosses being tedious health sponges or dying immediately because you brought the right thing sticker. The boring and uninspired settings reminiscent of 2d mario games alongside the lack of any unique NPCs. The AWFUL "partner" character. The annoyingly heavy reliance on the paper gimmick despite every other Paper Mario game using it as a nice aesthetic. These are all TERRIBLE design choices but not one of them doesn't feel intentional. I'm almost convinced that Nintendo hates Paper Mario fans so much that they hand crafted this game to be the worst shit ever.

People always (fairly) rag on this game for random encounters quite literally being a detriment and there being no point to them, but I'd argue that's the best part about the game. Combat here is so unenjoyable and if you were forced to actually fight random encounters it'd be SO much worse. Because it's pointless, I can just run away from everything and save myself the headache. Yeah the run button barely works and is just RNG dependent but like anything is better than having to sit through all of the random encounters.

Also bowser doesn't even have a line of dialogue here like wtf man he's the best Mario character have some respect.

Also also people who think this is disliked because it's different from the other Paper Mario games are weird. This game is genuinely terrible even if you haven't touched a single Paper Mario game. If you say this is overhated I'm stealing something out of your house.

I’ll never figure out why everyone acts like this game killed their grandma but I recall getting its strategy guide from Walmart cuz the devs think cryptic boss fights are funny

Genuinely one of the worst games I’ve ever played. Deserves every single lashing it still gets online.

color splash and origami king at least have good exploration

This game was extremely unentertaining to kid me and I find that impressive
I didn't like it when I was like 10

playing this game after playing tyd made me feel like i was insane

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?!?!?

One of the only RPGs where you want to AVOID combat. It punishes you for playing the game.

This game isn't broken. The game isn't rushed. They WANTED to make the game this way. I will never understand how, or why.

look, i get it

sticker star comes at a time where unique mario experiences were released far apart from each other, and for them to give the standard mario treatment to a series that (at the time) symbolized how far an incredibly experimental spin-off series can take itself when given proper love and care, was understandably a motivator in the current outrage that sparked from this game. but if one were to ignore all that, and go into this series with this game as their first experience, they'd walk away thinking it was a fun time.

i couldnt push through this one man its such a nothing game

The most baffling thing about this game isn't how much it got absolutely wrong about Paper Mario, but that they decided THIS was going to be the baseline for future Paper Mario games for TWO games.

Hot take: I actually really like Sticker Star. I like it more than Paper Mario 64, but I like it less than Super Paper Mario. Yes, battles are pointless here, but I like the scenarios this game puts you in. Yeah many puzzles are cryptic as hell, but I just like the vibe, idk.

I loved this game as a kid. To be honest I don't really understand the hate but I get that it took a huge step away from the RPG formula. I like the world map and how connected each world feels. The bowser fight is extremely difficult though. Im not going to call it over hated as I can understand that it has major problems

Give me back MY paper mario you bastards
