This is the third entry in the Shantae series, and is a damn good one. It may very well be my favourite one. It follows the Metroid-like gameplay style of its predecessors but still keeps things fresh with a slightly different art style and different mechanics as far as abilities are concerned. Like the other Shantae games, there are different endings depending on how quickly you beat the game and if you collect everything or not. The game looks nice and plays well. Jake Kaufman does a great job with the music as always.
a lot better than i thought it would be, sometimes the level design feels like a mario maker level and the bosses can feel repetitive and easy, but it makes up for it in personality, fun factor, and an amazing soundtrack
(also i keep wanting to give this game a 9 just because of HOW good the soundtrack is and how much personality is in this game, despite some occasional annoying gameplay)

This is where the series really comes into its own. A solid action platformer with much smoother movement and combat.
The artwork here is at the peak of its pixel art while the cartoon artwork has filed off the rough edges from Risky's Revenge. The music maintains its excellent quality and this game introduces some of the best tracks in the series.
Gameplay is a lot more frantic and fun than it was in RR as there's less focus on short complicated platforming segments and they make use of larger more open level design. The new pirate themed abilities give you a more offensive boost and add even add offence to movement without the awkward animal transformations from the previous game.
The puzzle aspect has been reduced to much simpler platforming challenges and what's left is more of a trade chain of taking x item to y character which does remove a lot of the backtracking from RR.
Overall a big improvement and a stand out entry in the series. If you're just getting into Shantae you could easily start here.

This game was a lot of fun! I really appreciated some of the improvements over Risky's Revenge (such as the hot baths). I think having played Risky's Revenge gave me some insights into the story. Since Shantae lost her genie powers at the end of RR, she's still human. Her hair still whips really well, but now spells are consumable items. You unlock various maneuvering abilities along the way. I'm really loving this franchise.
Retro action platformer. I was surprised at how simple the core gameplay was since this is a commonly praised game and generally considered the best Shantae game, but it just feels like a handheld platformer (because it is).
A lot of the 'level design' in this game is just having a large flat area with a shitload of enemies, many of which materialise out of thin air when you get close to them. I didn't mind it at the beginning but as I progressed I got slowly more frustrated until I quit at Mud Bog island.
There is also a lot of backtracking and random shit you have to do to progress. For some reason they took the worst parts of point & click adventures and put it in this game. I'm actually not sure how people might play this without a guide.
The UI is ugly but the in-game visuals are quite nice. The elephant in the room is the lewd character design. Practically every female character is skinny with huge tits on display and they all have dialogue so you can see their HD artwork. I guess it's supposed to be horny but I just found it fucking weird since they have such ridiculous body proportions.
Oh and I forgot to say, the music does slap.

This is a game that I already know is a 10/10 on a replay. The pirate gear is a MASSIVE upgrade from the genie abilities and I know that if I started the game with all of them that this game would be so so so fun. But I didn't, and so, it was just a pretty good Shantae game. 2nd of the 4 I've played I'd say. Likely 1 on a replay which I will give it....eventually.
