this one makes me feel
ultimate seems kinda obsessed with numbers (we have this many characters and this many stages)
i think brawl is the last one where being on the roster meant what it originally did
i had this moment of clarity while playing subspace where i just thought to myself “man… king dedede is in this game”
i don’t even like kirby i could just imagine myself finding out king dedede was in the game in 2007 (a month before i was born) and thinking “oh sweet dedede’s in this game”
i don’t know many brawl had soul that the rest of the series lacks
it makes me feel like a kid

I've debated on buying a Wii just so I could play this game again. I know this game is widely hated by the competitive community and I may be overrating it because of nostalgia but I'll never forget the experience I had with my siblings playing this game.
MAIN REVIEW
I won't go into gameplay much because I haven't played in years. You can tell Nintendo was trying to go for a darker tone in art style. All of the characters color palettes are darkened and so are the stages (at least compared to the newer releases). I was pretty bad at the actual fighting part of this game when I was younger because I didn't understand movesets.
SUBSPACE EMISSARY
I can't talk about this game without talking about the storymode. Not a single word is said but you can understand everything the characters want to say simply by their actions.
Seeing my favorite Nintendo characters team up in what seemed like unlikely duos was awesome. Link and Yoshi, Mario and Pit, Samus and Pikachu, Lucas and Pokemon Trainer, Meta Knight, Ike, and Marth. It was something special that I can't see them replicating. The attack on the Subspace Gunship is still one of my favorite moments in gaming. The music kicking in as its revealed that the fighters used the Halberd as a decoy and they were a distraction for Kirby to make the final blow on the ship is still something I rewatch.
FINAL
Although its hard for me to properly rate this game, it still has a special place in my heart.
3.5/5

The one thing this game still has over the smash games is the Sub Space story mode. It's an honest to god action adventure game which is just awesome. Even without a mode like that these games sale amazing so going through the effort adding that was cool. Seriously the other story modes of the other Smash games don't even begin to compete with this one. And the cherry on top is that it's co-op. Crazy stuff
As for the rest of the game it's okay smash stuff. Nothing too special. I know mechanically it's "Worse" than melee but I was never a crazy in depth player so it never bothered me. It was also nice to see third party characters finally added as playable fighters.
