Look, maybe I'm rating this higher than it actually desevers, but I never understood the mixed reception Ascension received when it launched.

This is one of the best looking PS3 games, the scale of the setpieces is just unbelievable. You thought the big snake in the new God of War was cool? You get a new setpiece of equal scale every other hour. Ascension rivals and arguably surpasses even the Poseidon fight at the beginning of God of War 3 when it comes to pure eye candy. You sometimes even lose sight of Kratos because the camera has to zoom out so far to capture all of the action.

Granted, the frame rate suffers in some scenes, but the 60 fps framerate target means that game stays playable even during dips. Experiences may differ, but I never felt like I missed an input because of low fps.

The combat system has been reworked and while I think the one in 3 is still slightly better, I like Ascension's new mechanics too. Making more use of the chains and the ability to pick up several secondary weapons are good additions, and I also like the different infusions Kratos' blades gain. Each of the four is themed after a god and offers a slightly changed moveset. They aren't as specialized as I would've wanted them to be, but what's there is still great fun.

Many of the other common points of criticism are either nonsensical or also apply to the other God of War games. Pacing issues? Every God of War pre 3 is worse. Tacked on multiplayer? Noone forces you to play it and the game is still as long and polished as the other entries.

I do agree that the story isn't adding too much to the overarching plot, but it works well enough. Kratos even gets to show emotions and is able to peacefully interact with another man! It's clear that they tried to do something about the series' sexism and while Ascension still sexualizes women, it's far less cringe worthy than the prior games with their sex QTEs.

All in all, Ascension is a great action game filled with awesome setpieces and deserves to stand next to the mainline titles. I'd rather replay this over the first two games or Chains of Olympus any day, and I recommend anyone who owns a PS3 and enjoys character action games at least gives it a try.

bom jogo, mas ainda prefiro os antigos

o jogo é fodase mas que saudade do multiplayer...

I couldn’t tell you much about this one. I remembered not liking it. It controls fine but man is it boring.

I was not a huge fan of the first God of War game because of its awful platforming sections. This was the last entry in the Greek saga and came out after God of War 3. The gameplay is different than other entries in the series and is much easier. The story is average but I don't like how it jumps all over the place. I also think some of the puzzles/sections drag on too long. Overall this is just an okay game; the story was clearly in a lull and needed to take a break and reboot the franchise which happened with the 2018 Norse game.

После крышесносной третьей части смотрится как деградация серии

It’s a good looking game and the story is decent but the combat is the worst in the series and the puzzles are awful.

God of War: Ascension is the first game in the God of War story set 10 years before the original God of War. God of War is a hack and slash action adventure game. As with all the God of War the combat is great and the story is captivating. Nothing good or bad specifically about God of War: Ascension.

82/100

Cumple, como el resto de la saga, es divertido y algunas partes para completarlo al 100% se hacen un reto.

longe de ser um jogo ruim, mas da saga god of war ele é um dos mais fracos mesmo, mas o gráfico desse jogo é impecável

Puzzles are not great but still a nice hack and slash with decent story pretty hard tho

It was fun but no replayability for me

Accended to a disappointed degree

Does anyone actually remember this game?

Sony told Santa Monica to keep going after they emptied their sack five times, what the hell was I expecting

The first GoW that i had disliked and i could not even blame Jaffe

This may be the weakest of the God of War games but it's still way over-hated. The presentation is amazing, as always these games push their system's limits. The environments and level design are huge and wonderful to look at. The music is great too. The story isn't as necessary in this game but seeing Kratos a lot more calm and mellow in Ascension works super well.

The combat didn’t really need to be messed with but I think some of the experiments here are still good, I like the Blades of Chaos being interchanged with different elements instead of having different weapons, that’s neat. It also replaces the O button with temporary sub-weapons, which is cool. The combat makes this game stand out from the others in the series, and it’s pretty bold for doing that. Some other mechanics were changed kinda unnecessarily too, for example, climbing. Other than that, this is still a very fun game.

Overall Ascension is a good game, it’s lacking in the story department, and a lot of the gameplay changes feel unnecessary, but the beautiful presentation and action sequences make up for that. Regardless, the gameplay is still God of War, which means it’s brutal, epic, and violent action with amazing scale and spectacle. So, even if it feels like Ascension isn’t necessary, I still like its place in the series.
