Incredible what a modern-retro coat of paint can do for a piece of classic game design. This is one of those early niche Japanese arcade games that made a big impact on the nation’s fledgling designers, but the original board and the Game Boy translation are both rough entry points. This NEO version is one of the coolest looking Famicom games I’ve ever seen; it’s dripping with style and movement and the music absolutely whips. The pixel art and colors remind me of stuff like Animal Well; abstract but vibrant and readable. Feel like I’ll be booting this up for quick sessions going forward.
