missing the emotional relevance of unpacking - still a satisfying puzzle game with unique mechanics and mutable solutions

Shiokawa, much like Kurôzu-cho, is a cursed town. Every night, you take a bath, look through the peephole and prepare to investigate. Will you ever get used to that... thing staring at your apartment's door from the shadows? No matter.

Every run of World of Horror is taken straight out of a horror manga or one of Lovecraft's stories. Long forgotten gods, bizarre people and Japanese urban legends monsters plague the liminal spaces that act as scenarios to this game. Every frame contributes to creating a chilling and foul atmosphere, and every time the screen flickers you know you're in for a sight.

There are some games that are clearly more than a sum of its parts, but World of Horror kind of feels like the opposite for me. Its parts are fantastic: the soundtrack and sound design, the writing, the random events, the character and environment design, and the art style, which is where the game shines. However, the combat feels so weird and disconnected from the rest of the game that I can't seem to wrap my head around it. It's simple enough, sure, but I can't help but feeling its mechanics don't work well with the flow of the game. Switching the combat system for a card-based combat as seen in Slay the Spire would've been an interesting design choice, but alas, we wouldn't have this game as it is, paying homage to early text-based RPGs. In the end, you get used to the combat system and it never really becomes an obstacle to enjoying the game at all.

All in all, World of Horror is a game that MUST be experienced by manga horror fans and just about anyone interested in horror really. The storytelling, the writing and the visuals are fantastic... I just wished the gameplay would be more down my alley. Nevertheless, it's a very fitting game for Halloween and one that will leave durable imagery in my mind.

Metroid Dread is the first 2D Metroid game I completed, and it is what got me into the Metroid Series. The atmosphere of this game is incredible, and I think that it offers a snappy gameplay loop and is such a joy (as opposed to dread) to boot up and play. Super polished and clean.

Complicated, hard to look at little brother of one of the most beloved games of all time that I enjoy more than the first. The hate for this game was unreal from people who seemed to not understand the first game. The gameplay is a straight upgrade from the first and I enjoy the story more. The pacing could use some work but those are my only real complaints. Excited for last of us 3.

Aside from some confusion about where you start on the map and some collisions the game didn't warn me about until I had already crashed, this game is really solid and I had a blast getting through it! Even though your only real environment is the inside of the sub, it really does feel like you're immersed in an alien moon from the atmosphere and the little glimpses you get through the camera. I wish the final scare was as good as some of the other anomalies you get to see, it's a bit lame in comparison.

games are the best medium for visiting other places, and babbdi is a visit to a particularly compelling place. came for the brutalism, stayed for the delight of traversal. worth lingering in.

The side quests in this were more compelling than the base game's. More vibrant and memorable characters as well throughout. Hell, Gildun alone carries it I love that guy lmao

Lack of truly new machines was the one disappointing aspect - scorchers and fire/frostclaws didn't feel all that different from standard base game fare. But HZD combat is still pretty fun so

I think this is my favorite resident evil game that ive played. it had a really easy to understand and not at all complicated story line (unlike other, more recent, games) and it had interesting characters. the story was lacking a bit but that can literally be said about any re game. i think re2 stands out because it isnt overly complicated. its just a zombie game where you follow the characters survival and fight creatures. the build up of the villains were pretty good, too.

the gameplay is my absolute favorite of any re games ive played. it had such fun strategizing, and the perfect amount of difficulty. the sections with mr x didnt drag and were the perfect length. the suspense was built up so well and not overdone at all. im not great with horror so i played this with a friend, but if i was someone who was super into horror stuff i would absolutely love how balanced it was. the puzzles were a bit frustrating at times but most of the time they were well implemented.

anyways not much else to say about it. i havent played the og so i cant rate how good the remake was. i have to say its the resident evil i enjoyed the most. i wish theyd make more simple games like this, id enjoy it a lot more

this game was totally out of my comfort zone-- but it was something i really wanted to play. it was one of the first games i got for my ps4, and i just knew i wanted to finish it at some point. immediately starting with game 1, i was overwhelmed with the lack of aim assist, and the puzzles. again, all totally new to me. i am so glad i stuck it out though!

game 1- a pretty decent first impression. im gonna leave out a lot of my own personal struggles as most of it was just lack of exposure to puzzle games/ shooter games. i do want to say that this game is honestly 3/5 stars for me alone. i just checked and i got 75% through with it and never finished it. i just moved onto the next game. will i go back? maybe. probably not. i wanna say for anyone who is going in blind that 2 and 3 are soooo much better than one. if i could go back and tell myself one thing about the game, it would be to not give up because im not vibing with the first game. i wouldnt say the games are totally self contained, i would recommend playing them in order, but they never really reference the events in 1. you can kinda assume what happened. the plot was also lacking to begin with, so no big deal.
now, i wanna explain why i never finished it. so there were benefits to this game, but all of them were in 2 and 3 and better, so i will get to that later. uncharted 1 just felt like a string of negative emotions. at first, i was frustrated with the mc to the point where i didnt wanna play as him. then, it felt lonely. then, it felt frustratingly difficult (and lonely). it was just a constant cycle between being frustrated with the plot and frustrated with the game itself. i hate it when games make you take such long journeys alone. maybe its a personal thing, but goddamn so much of this game wouldve been more tolerable if nate had someone to bounce off of. it just felt empty and soulless.
dont even get me started on the goddamn jetski part. WHY WOULD I HAVE TO SHOOT AND DRIVE AND AVOID OBSTACLES WHEN I HAVE ANOTHER PERSON ON THE JETSKI WHO HAS A GUN. the fact that i have a savefile that is somehow past that part is the only reason i kinda wanna go back and finish this game. i almost feel like im wasting away my hard work not having it finished.
anyways, to sum, bad intro. i get it may be important for his character, but feel free to skip it.

game 2- IMMEDIATELY loved. the intro had already hooked me in, and it had the perfect way to build up difficulty. it showcased what the game would have you do without overwhelming you. it had an interesting narrative that went back and forth through time. i think this was done wonderfully.
one thing i would like to also praise is the combat. i only died due to combat a couple times. most of my deaths were due to thinking something was a ledge and it wasnt. obviously though, this game isnt perfect. there were parts towards the end where they put wayyy too many men with rocket launchers. or when they didnt really give you a clear path to follow. i would say for the most part, the combat was very balanced and fair.
now, what was not very fair was the puzzles, at least in my personal opinion. a lot of the puzzles were very difficult to figure out and i ended up looking up a chunk of them. it wasnt really that the game makes you think, because thats what uncharted is advertised as! a game with a little bit of everything: puzzles, parkour, combat. but every time there was a popup that i should look in my journal, i audibly groaned and put my controller down for a minute. i just think it isnt an amazing system. not to spoil my review for 3, but to prove that its not that im not a puzzle person, i didnt look up a single puzzle for 3, and thought they were fine. 2 felt kinda overcomplicated.
obviously i wouldnt compare a plot like this to tlou, thats just unfair. even though theyre both naughty dog, you need to go in with the correct expectations. for what the game IS, i think the plot was pretty good! it kept me hooked, entertained, and immersed! it wasnt out of this world, but it was certainly an upgrade from 1. ESPECIALLY with nates character.

game 3- honestly i see so many people saying 2 and 4 are good, so i assumed 3 would be bad. its not! i was hooked in from the beginning once again, loved the fashbacks, loved the backstory that led to an important plot point (that made me tear up, might i add). narrative wise id say the only flaw was the fact that it kinda feels like two different games if that makes sense? not to get spoiler-ish, but they build up one pretty cool story, then abruptly switch to another. guess it technically made sense, but in my head the first and second half of this game feel very different. i do have to give props to the characters. they were all so well written in this one. all unique personalities and amazing dynamics. i know uncharted isnt a story focused game, but it did so well for that.
in terms of level structure, the build up was good yet again. as i mentioned previously, i did not look up a single puzzle for this game. they werent easy, they did take some brain power, but it had a clear path on how to figure it out. also his journal is a lot more helpful now. maybe its just me, but it felt like i actually used it and was like "ohhh". in terms of combat, honestly, this game was kind of bad with it. they added some new features, such as throwing back bombs, which is absolutely amazing compared to when youd have to run away from them and then get sniped to death. they also improved stealth i think? but most of the stealth missions also worked in aggro which was good. i like aggro. the issue was, some missions that didnt have the option of stealth were just too much. too many enemies in an area where you cant really hide and too many ROCKET LAUNCHERS. WHAT IS THIS SERIES OBSESSION WITH ROCKET LAUNCHERS. LEAVE ME ALONE. i think it relied too hard on "die a million times to figure it out" and i kinda hate that. thats more of a series issue than a game 3 issue, though. i saw the death screen too many times for my own good. anyways, too many enemies. which id understand if some missions could be done in stealth but nope.
last thing i wanna say is i seriously appreciate that 3 didnt have too much of a final boss. the ending felt rewarding, but not like they threw in a random boss for no reason. 2 struggled with this. i didnt expect to see 3 improve in those terms.

well, i have to say im super excited to move onto 4! and maybe tomb raider after! i would rec this for anyone who loves puzzle games, but honestly anyone could give it a try, its pretty fun!
