JRPGS that aren't JRPGS!

Made by western developers as homage or fans that became developers. Some truly great! Some...not.

Honestly you could put a LOT of RPG maker games here, be it neat stuff like Amber Throne or hot piles of trash like 'The Book of Legends'

@Jamesbuc - The Amber Throne looks pretty neat, at least visually. I won't add them though.

For anyone interested Sea of Stars launches next month on PS Extra or Premium. It looks gorgeous.

I could probably also suggest
- Boot Hill Heroes & Boot Hill Bounties
- Pier Solar
- Soma Spirits: Rebalance
- Ikenfell

@Jamesbuc - Pier Solar is on the list, Ikenfell is a good call though!

Anachronox count? Lol

@dwardman - Not heard of that before, by Ion Storm no less! It looks at first glance like a Western RPG. What makes it like a JRPG? Genuinely interested.

it has a very obvious jrpg esque turn-based battle system with some basic positioning tactics. it was riding the ff7 high at the time

@dwardman - Ah ok, nice, I'll add it. Might give that one a try down the line too.

I’m playing it atm but guessing Lisa would count too

@Lead07, @zn0 - Both added thanks!

anachronox is a really interesting game btw. made by ion storm with tom hall as its lead, they basically hired inexperienced developers as long as they had played chrono trigger. having been fired (basically) by id a few years before because he was just too nice of a guy and he was more interested in making more commander keen than in doom, it was hall's chance to really make the game he wanted to make. despite that, ion storm was a notoriously toxic environment in an absurdly expensive office space and the company was pretty much constantly on fire, with hall doing his best to keep all that away from his team. and then the release and subsequent shame and failure of daikatana completely overshadowed anachronox, because ion storm was over and hall's team still had to work a literally traumatizing amount of hours to finish their game before they were jobless. they really loved their game and believed in it, and amazingly enough anachronox is actually a good game. tom hall didn't even have to fight with eidos to keep it alive pretty much because he was such a good dude. (they still lost a ton of money on ion storm.) literally a game made from the stuff of dreams.

@zn0 - I have no idea how I have never heard of this game, it sounds like the kind of thing that would be right up my street. It seemd like it is playable on Steamdeck and is only a fiver so I'm all in on it. Thanks for the info, it genuinely sounds like a fascinating game.

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan and Masquerada: Songs and Shadows.

Does Sonic Chronicles count? Yes the Sonic “characters” are Japanese creations but the game itself was made in Canada

@SunliSonata - As an outsourced game from a Japanese studio I was on the fence about it but then I never wrote down any specific rules. In it goes!
