Lump Blue in with this as the "Gen 1" games, but even though I've rarely beaten many mainline Pokémon games, I did grow up with them. Turn-based RPGs were often my enemy, though, so a lot of these games never got beaten. Very fond memories with these classic games, though.

2021

This was the surprise I didn't know I wanted but I'm glad I got it. When Bethesda randomly released a Quake remaster on Xbox Game Pass, I was just expecting a solid DOOM-like FPS game. And sure, it was, but this is a game that I've gotten so much replayability out of (I've played it six times at the time of this writing). As far as games in the style of DOOM, this is one of the best ones, with some of the most memorable level design and gunplay. It's a boatload of fun made better by the great remastering, and I also highly recommend playing through the campaign with a friend. Made the experience (and the expansions) that much sweeter.

Sure, Donkey Kong Country 3 may be a shortened step back from Donkey Kong Country 2 that doesn't differentiate a whole lot from it, but that doesn't mean it isn't super fun. The platforming is still top-notch, and the overall flow of the gameplay is great. Even if it is the weakest of the "Country" games, it's still an enjoyable time.

How the hell do you make a rhythm game and fuck up the "rhythm?"

The button presses aren't even in time.

This shit is ass.

I tried it out of sheer curiosity and I hardly remember a thing about it.

It'd probably be fun if I stuck with it more, though.

Tried it out, couldn't get a handle on the controls.

Still think it would be cool if this franchise made a blazing comeback at some point.

Crash Bandicoot 2 took what made the first game great and cleaned it up a ton. For a franchise that seemed to be made on such a tight schedule, it was crazy to see just how much they could improve these games in such a short time.

Look, I know that GoldenEye was historically significant to gaming when it first came out. Time, however, has not been kind to the game in my opinion, and I find it to be a dated clunky mess. And while I'm glad this Xbox Series X re-release finally offers twin-stick controls, the overall package is pretty disappointing, especially given that a proper remaster exists and could've been released instead.

Completed through an emulator.

Star Fox 64 took a game that was rather janky (albeit pretty groundbreaking) and turned it into something much bigger. It felt like this game really set the standard for what a rail shooter could do, and it remains by far one of the Nintendo 64's best games.

USE THE BOOST TO GET THROUGH!

Completed through an emulator.

All things considered, Yoshi's Story didn't do anything too groundbreaking as a platformer, especially on a system that had 3D platformers galore. Still, it was a fun, lightweight little game that you could sink a few hours into if you had downtime. It was nothing extraordinary, but it was certainly not bad either.

I feel like the classic DOOM formula was basically "if you've played one, you've played them all.” DOOM 64 fell perfectly into that trap for me; while playing, I couldn't help but feel like my mind was on repeat with moments from DOOM and DOOM II. It's not terrible, but I can definitely say I'm glad I got it as a free download with DOOM Eternal.

Tried it once through emulation. It's no Mario Kart, but it gets the job done.

I bet this was sick back in the day. Sadly, it doesn't play as well now.

Played through the Rare Replay collection.

Had some fun blowing things up throughout, but it dulled for me a little quickly.
