The People's Wings: Simcade Flight Games

No disrespect to the seasoned, learned pilots of our times, but I have to be in a certain mood for hardcore flight sims. Sometimes I just wanna climb into the cockpit with all my driving aids on, like I'm playing a regular game of Gran Turismo or something. No crashing a minute after takeoff, no expensive HOTAS controls, and plenty of view options beyond first-person. Or maybe I wanna try something other than planes, like a jetpack or hang glider. That's something these sim-arcade flight games excel at.

Some simcade flight games are "civilian", eschewing human vs. human (or vs. robot/AI, etc.) combat for more benign goals and interactions within each environment. Others go all in on warfare, but keep an arcade-y simplification of controls, physics, and mechanics. I can't vouch for all these games' quality, either, nor how closely they adhere to the simcade flight genre's center. But most of these focus more on slick pacing, less strict/difficult moment-to-moment flight, and showcasing the essence of flight through one perspective or another. Some are borderline, yet have enough sim-y or arcade-y elements + lack of showcase elsewhere to fit here.

Please give me recommendations for new adds to the list; for all I know, there's always something missing. I'm excluding space sims from this list as they're well-documented elsewhere and would dwarf the count of airborne flight simcade titles here. Games must also have you piloting an aircraft, like a plane or helicopter; flying as a bird or other airborne creature/person doesn't count here.

Notable Omissions (not yet on IGDB/BL):
Project: Intellisphere
Touhou Flight Simulator

April 2, 2023: Initial list, adding notes for games throughout the day/night.

Sopwith
Sopwith
Very light on the sim side, but still a bit too complex to just be a Defender-like side scroller. Loop-de-loops and managing your direction + inertia matter here, and same goes for shooting/bombing.
Thunder Blade
Thunder Blade
Obviously an arcade game, but one which better emphasizes momentum, inertia, and lack of instant air control vs. After Burner II, setting a standard for later SEGA simcade flight cabs
Wings
Wings
Criticized at the time for its simple sim model and focus on bombast, but a relevant and retrospectively adored example of simcade flight combat.
Pilotwings
Pilotwings
Nintendo's standard-bearer series for this genre, and one that they've done dirty over time. Most only know this due to getting featured in Smash, lol
Red Baron
Red Baron
Notably less complex/complicated than similar Great War sims of the day, again like Wings.
Stunt Island
Stunt Island
A simple, accessible pared-down flight sim focusing on stunts, barnstorming, and other Pilotwings-adjacent objectives. This was popular in the pre-Windows DOS days.
Thunderhawk
Thunderhawk
Getting some heli-only rep on the list with Core Design's classic series.
Air Combat
Air Combat
The flat-shaded arcade prototype for Ace Combat. What a way to start.
Strike Commander
Strike Commander
It's reaching closer to full sim, but this was the Wing Commander devs' main go at an earthbound setting, and still accessible for anyone more interested in the story and playing without a stick.
Dawn Patrol
Dawn Patrol
Air Combat
Air Combat
Both the PS1 and System 22 versions are a solid start for Ace Combat, back before Namco had extra plans for the series.

Kokuu Hyouryo Nirgends
Kokuu Hyouryo Nirgends
Like The Airs after it, this qualifies mainly for its simcade dogfighting mode, even though a bit more time's spent in menus, ADV-style sequences, and other RPG-adjacent activities
Ace Combat 2
Ace Combat 2
Air Race Championship
Air Race Championship
The Airs
The Airs
Combo of JRPG and flight simcade sequences/overworld, though definitely leaning towards the former.

Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere
Airforce Delta

Airline Pilots
Airline Pilots
Maybe too hardcore sim for this list, but that makes it truly stand out as the lone arcade-exclusive example I can think of. Plus the free-flight mode might as well come straight out of Pilotwings.

Challenge #1: identify which of these games doesn't have any combat! I already know the answers, but it's just funny how so many air piloting experiences rely on dogfighting, bombing, etc. to sell.
