i fucking adore games like this where it feels like the plot isnt ultimately made to be understood comprehensively with 3 hour lore analysis videos but instead interpreted through the players feelings.

My funniest surpise going through Star Ocean games is that there's seemingly a series trend of introducing the true main villain in the last 5% of the game who exists to deliver some suprisingly based critique of globalism for one cutscene then immediately die

i missed like 6 party members cause of Cius bruh

i appreciate fire emblem for being the one game series where i want to skip the cutscenes to just get to the gameplay. maddening blind first playthrough is peak

the in memoriam at the end of the game is the saddest moment I've had playing any game ever

It's overflowing with phenomenal ideas and the soundtrack is incredible but tbh the repetitive pacing killed my enjoyment at times. Also the quality of the content fluctuates so massively sometimes within and between episodes, but it ends on an incredible high which makes it worth it. The fight scenes are also (mostly in the early episodes) so terrible I'm sorry I couldn't even find it in me to appreciate them ironically. Still gas though and has a lot of new things to say on a diverse range of subjects that I've never really seen touched on and will probably stay with me for a long time!

TLDR ROSA GANG FOR LIFE SHE DESERVED IT ALL

2022

Probably the most creative game I've ever played. So many jaw dropping moments delivered purely through gameplay and environmental storytelling. The final puzzle is one of my top gaming experiences of all time. Masterclass tbh

replaying awakening crushed my soul in a way that only a truly average childhood game can

this is the game your unemployed friend is playing at 2am on a tuesday

the goats are my favourite characters

JET SET RADIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (thank god this game is as short as it is or I wouldn't have liked it)

There's a pokemon mystery dungeon style personality test to determine your stand and I just think thats the coolest fucking thing ever. (Honestly its probably 4 stars I just want to gas up this game)

2008

This game is what like 90% of pretentious video game writers wish they were capable of making. David Cage would probably enter a coma if he beat OFF. At the same time though this game just made me feel so twisted the entire time while playing it that it feels cursed. I'll probably never play another game like it but I'm also really really glad I won't have to.

I think the Octopath games biggest triumph that isn't talked about enough is how well they evoke a feeling of adventure. There's no RPG (not just JRPG) period in my opinion that captures the boundless optimism and intrigue of exploring a fantasy world. In that way I really think it captures the essential kind of 'escapist' root of fantasy perfectly. In particular I really love how significant gameplay progression is tied behind items rather than levelling up, it means that when you go out of your way to explore or enter an area that's perhaps to dangerous for you, you're typically rewarded with a weapon or item befitting of the risk that you took. Idk shit is honestly just gas, sound mixing a bit sloppy sometimes tho lol
