Skate

2007

Talk about a game-changer. This gave a jab to the arm of a dying niche genre with totally unique and airtight gameplay, bringing a "realistic" style of movement that never feels slow or gets stale. There are plenty of challenges that take you through a fun story which echoes the rise to the top feeling of THUG, and it's an excellent start to the franchise.

A surprisingly good sci-fi console FPS with solid gameplay, great presentation, and quality storytelling. I was impressed how well this game holds up for its age

Revelations was a decent non-mainline (spinoff?) RE game combining the 3rd person shooter view of games like RE4, 5 and 6 but focuses more on a survival horror type of gameplay with slower-paced sections, less ammo, and overall enemies and level design geared towards this end instead of the action-based gameplay of other 3rd person view RE games.

The story was particularly bad from a RE fan point of view, but if you step outside of RE fandom, it has some interesting elements that touch on corporate corruption and some interesting developments as you progress through the game.

Review gets bonus points for starring Jill and Chris, two beloved characters for RE fans of the series. Level design is decent but it's really dependant on the level you area playing on (i.e. ship level is great, cave levels not so much).

The HD remaster version that I played for the PS3 featured improved graphics over the 3DS version and it was a nice way of enjoying the game on a big TV. With that being said, graphics are nothing to write home about.

Pure

2008

The first of the two late 2000's Disney racing games that have no right to be as good as they are, this is definitely more on the mold of ATV Offroad Fury then anything else. Still, a wonderfully underrated racing game.

Fun game, nothing to write home about though. Definitely a launch title for the ps3. The story did nothing for me and it was mostly just a put a podcast on and shoot some aliens kinda game which was nice.

Visually, tonally, sonically, and atmospherically evil. It's like blood, rain, heat, and dirt personified in the best way possible.

Still the best Dirt game out there, this was packed with content and found a perfect balance between arcade and sim racing. Good gameplay was at the center of attention, it didn't yet go all-in on realism or drifting & Gymkhana. Huge amount of game modes and different event types. I guess you can only go downhill once you reach perfection, and that's what happened to Dirt series after Dirt 2.

I was really having fun with this. It's set up like a TV show; broken into episodes complete with recaps and previews and credits for each chapter. It's a lot of fun, over the top nonsense, like a guy punching a guy so hard it breaks the entire planet in half. Even though it has a lot of QTE-laden cutscenes I was really enjoying the wild characters and art style.

Uuuuuuntil chapter 10. In this scene, apropos of nothing, our hero visits some sort of hot springs resort. There the player is treated to a first-person interactive scene in which he first spends time ogling the staff, then moves quickly on to exposing himself, before finally just straight up sexually assaulting a service worker. But don't worry, because it's all played for laughs! Technically it's only an attempted assault, because he's comically punched by his father figure as a "Denied!" achievement pops.

I just don't know. This is so normalized I couldn't even find mention of it in any reviews. The IGN review, written by a woman, specifically mentions the scene but carefully leaves out the attempted assault. Instead it's described as "the objective is to stop Asura from staring for too long at the generous assets of a hot-springs attendant" which as far as I can tell is completely false; you cannot progress in the game until you've gone through the whole menu of sex pest behaviors.

Like I didn't just fall off the fucking redneck truck I know women have always had it bad. But the misogyny in some of these Japanese games in particular feels almost compulsory. It's like there's some regulatory body that comes through and is like, "You allowed the player to go 5 hours without being horrible in some fucked up regressive way to a woman. Back to the drawing board!" From my many minutes of googling about it I know everything about how shitty it is to be a woman in Japan. Obviously nothing I do is going to change any of that, I just wish we as gamers were, like, slightly less inured to it.

Anyway, in Chapter 9, you're a badass demigod going through a wild narrative. In Chapter 11, you're a badass demigod going through a wild narrative, and for no particular reason, a hilarious wannabe rapist! Somehow the experience lost its luster once I realized I was playing as Donald Trump's self-image.

The word hidden gem gets thrown around a lot, so much so that games which are heralded as hidden gems become popular well liked games. MXGP is a true hidden gem and due to its nature as a bit of a niche title I feel confident it will stay that way, especially considering how many good racers there are on the console. MXGP is the first official MX game on the console, but is fairly similar to the previously released MX vs ATV games. This is some fast action, dirt track racing and it is a lot of fun. The first thing I have to mention is the incredible track degradation/deformation, by this I mean the surface of the race track - the mud- being carved up by other racers, creating a totally different track each lap. Sega Rally Revo pioneered the track degradation/ deformation effects and MXGP takes it to another level. Lines and routes will get cut into the track, some of which are helpful and some of which deviate from the racing line. It's a really nice feature and it looks great and adds some variety to races. This is helped by the excellent physics. The cornering feels right and the ruble gives you some nice feedback each turn feeling very responsive. I'm sure fans of MX will dig this one, but even for none race fans it is a decent and polished package, with everything you would expect from a 2014 racing game. On the negative side there are a few issues. Perhaps this can be played with in the menus, but I found the game was a bit too forgiving of rule breaking and crashes. Even on the most difficult of handling settings I was able to maintain first even after a crash. This could also affect the longevity of the game as some may not find it challenging enough. For a fairly unheard of 360 title though these are minor flaws and it is a great game. If you are looking for more mud based fun after Sega Rally Revo, go for this one.

Put the controller on the ground just as Psycho Mantis said and it didn't move a single inch because i put it on a rug lets do better next time bud
