Wife’s Reaction:
“It’s just a whole lot of shing shing thunk blarg blerch bleeeeh ya know?”

A Hell of a Time Sink:
Diablo excels at being a game that you don’t have to think too much while playing. You want to stay focused so things don’t get out of hand with all the enemies, but it’s really just a good reason to squad up with friends and dick around while slaying hordes of demons.

Wife’s Reaction:
“I’m not giving you a comment for a game I didn’t watch. Not doing it.”

Come Hell or High Water:
Another DLC for Final Fantasy XVI filled with incredible boss fights but lacking in overall content in its story scenario. Tonberries and a timekeeper and Leviathan the Lost all will keep this memorable. And even if the story is light, the Kairos Gate challenge areas should keep me busy for quite a while.

Wife’s Reaction:
“Did you have fun?You sure swore a lot.”

There’s Sand in my Metroidvania:
You’re often retreading ground in Metroidvanias, and never has the traversal been as fun as it is in the Lost Crown. Finally, we have a new Prince of Persia and it’s a “video game” game. Mount Qaf, the game’s setting, is massive with plenty of intense challenges and secrets for engaged players.

Wife’s Reaction:
“I’m a little concerned you may love this game more than me.”

Party in the Front, Meteor in the Back:
Instead of being a tight, focused narrative like the first game, Rebirth offers freedom: explore the world, tackle sidequests, and enjoy minigames as you like. It complements its predecessor so well by changing the structure while building on what worked: the characters, music, and combat. An all-time personal fave.

Wife’s Reaction:
“Items collected at 69%? Nice.”

Guns. Lots of Guns:
My first feelings with Axiom Verge were very positive. An old-school game that evokes the feelings of classic Metroid? Exactly what I wanted. But it never felt like the adventure evolved. There are way too many guns and some of the traversal abilities are odd. In the end, I felt like it was just fine.

Wife’s Reaction:
“Gross.”

Planting the Seeds:
The Bad Seed is the first DLC for Dead Cells and it certainly feels like it. The biomes are a nice change from the core game but not the greatest and the boss fight is merely fine. I wonder how I’d feel about it if I was playing at release, though, since all of the additions it brought set the stage for greater things to come.

Wife’s Reaction:
“That’s a big F-U. Literally.”

Give This DLC a Big Hand:
My continued journey through Dead Cells has me taking all of the DLC out of order. This pack’s biomes are fun to explore with challenging enemies and another unique and exciting boss fight. Even after all these runs the game still has its hooks in me.

Wife’s Reaction:
“I’m amazed at how bro-y you got after beating Dracula. Chill, bruh.”

Somehow Dracula Returned:
It’s all thanks to this DLC that my love for Dead Cells is at such a high point. The moment I got into the Castlevania levels I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. It’s a perfect homage to a series that isn’t getting much love right now, and I just want more of it.

Wife’s Reaction:
“What’s this you’re saying about 19-inches of Sephiroth?”

On the Hunt for Rebirth:
Yuffie is such a blast to control! This additional content to FFVIIR is light on story but makes up for that with engaging combat and even more thrilling boss fights. The last boss on Hard difficulty checked me for a bit, but I overcame the challenge. I am now ready for Rebirth.

Wife’s Reaction:
“You talk a lot under your breath while you play that game.”

A Rising Tide Lifts All Games:
I used to say I wasn’t a fan of roguelites, yet here I can’t stop playing one. This DLC has the Infested Shipwreck biome that I really enjoy, but it’s the two amazing boss fights that make the Queen and the Sea such a memorable experience.

Wife’s Reaction:
“Major Adventure Time and Dead Cell vibes. Creepy and awesome.”

The Fast and the Furious:
One of those indies I had on my radar and never got around to playing. Immediately, Hyper Light Drifter hits with a wild opening, then leaves you to wander and figure out what to do and where to go. It’s fast and challenging and has awesome vibes and style.

Wife’s Reaction:
“Sephiroth: Still villainous. Still gorgeous.”

Let the Battles Begin:
It’s not every day you change your favorites. Final Fantasy VII Remake won me over in 2019 and playing it now confirmed it: FFVIIR is my new favorite Game of all Time. The game is extraordinary: music, story, combat, characters, boss fights. I can’t stop thinking about it all and I’m hungry for more!

Wife’s Reaction:
“Best performance of 'Romeo and Juliet' ever. Add it to high school curriculums immediately.”

The Weight of the World:
I set out to replay Automata ahead of an upcoming NieR concert, and I’m so glad I did because I love the game even more this go-around. Flashy combat, amazing music, and a unique story lead this game to a high spot in my faves of all time. Plus it’s a spectacular Switch port!

Wife’s Reaction:
“We need more Booster. That little freak makes me smile.”

Hitch Your Remake to a Star:
Super Mario RPG is another one of those classics I missed out on. Luckily, it’s a game that holds up thanks to its fast and light turn-based combat and the whimsical journey Mario and the gang find themselves on. Plus, the game isn’t terribly long at just over 13 hours.

Wife’s Reaction:
“DON’T PUT THAT FRUIT THERE!”

When Life Gives You Lemons...:
You play enough of a game to get one more in for the year! Suika Game is that type of game you can easily lose time with, which is what I did every time I said “one more game.” Its fruit evolution is easy to understand and the fruit physics both excite and frustrate as a chain reaction can save you from a near game over or bumping up against other fruit messes up big plans.
