Half-life is a solid FPS. The gameplay progresses at a decent rate, and is fairly well balanced, but that is about all you can say for the game. The cons are that the pacing is erratic, the aesthetics (at least for the first three quarters of the game) are bland and sterile, the story (as praised as it is) is shallow, irrelevant.
But all games have their ups and downs. if you like it non-stop action you might give a chance.

It's the perfect combination of simple gameplay and atmosphere, it could never make me feel anything other than joy and wonderment in a weird way.
What was the ending again? Was it that he discovers a silhouette of a girl, we assume it's his sister he's looking for, the end? That pretty much feels like what we were trying to do has been accomplished and nothing more. He's not alone anymore and he's thankful his journey is over.
Definitely didn't get the <5 deaths...
