to be honest, the only game on this collection i’ve played much was revisiting sunshine. i enjoyed (and beat!) that game as a kid and was looking forward to hanging out in its world again. while there are still a lot of things about the game i like, i never realized how truly awful those “secret” stages were. the controls are so slippery and yet they want you to do precision platforming!!! it’s a huge disappointment if you’re used to super mario 64’s physics. i ended up dropping the game at one especially stupid secret stage and haven’t picked it up since.

i knew this game was a fan favorite but i was shocked at just how GOOD this game was. and it’s an NES game!!!! how incredible that it’s so beautiful and detailed!
admittedly, i played it on 3DS so i did not have to deal with slowdown. i’m sure i still would have enjoyed it with lag, but i don’t see why anyone would play the laggy version when a better version exists now.
anyways, kirby’s adventure is such an improvement from kirby’s dream land that it’s hard to believe that this is only the second kirby game. this game is challenging enough to put up a fight for even adults, yet easy enough that just about anyone is able to beat it if they really try. i haven’t attempted to 100% clear it yet but i think i would like to someday.
the sense of place in this game is incredible. it really feels like kirby is traveling through his world, and with certain stages at different times of the day, it also feels like time is passing! the story appears simple at first but has a fun twist that marks the beginning of king dedede’s evolution from enemy to ally. the final boss… so cinematic! so exhilarating! this game is just so cool, especially if your only other experience with NES platformers is mario. with a game like this, i can understand why kirby games are still made and loved to this day!

while technically not my FIRST kirby game, this was the first kirby game i spent a lot of time with. i was totally enamored with its cute yet dark aesthetic. some of the dark matter scenes were genuinely scary to kid me! a recent replay of this game as an adult had me loving it just as much. how could anyone not love this game?
it wasn’t until i started playing other kirby games, like adventure and forgotten land, that i realized 64’s flaws. kirby’s movement speed IS slow. this game IS incredibly short, even if you 100% clear it. quite a few of the shards make no sense on how to get unless you look at a guide (though to be honest, i think 64 did these collectables WAY better than dream land 2 and 3).
regardless, i love this game and think it’s still very enjoyable if you go into it with the right mindset!
