A fantastic return to form for the Doom franchise, bringing back fast, frenetic combat that feels remarkably fresh while harkening back to the 90’s era of Id. Unfortunately, I do feel it is severely outclassed by its sequel, Doom Eternal, but that doesn’t invalidate how much of a breath of fresh air this was in 2016

What if we made a Doom game but everything was ugly and it was slow and you can’t see anything and the shotgun was bad? While auteur theory is really dicey in its application to games, its hard not to come away feeling like this is Carmack’s Doom, completely lacking Romero’s vision and playfulness. While it’s technical accomplishments are to be lauded, it doesn’t particularly hold up as a game that you play.

While it is basically the same game as the first, I think what differences exist between this and the original make it ultimately a better game. I think the level design is a lot more focused and the addition of the super shotgun adds a lot to the arsenal, not to mention the new demons like the Revenant, Archvile and Arachnotron. Plus, basically all Doom mods use Doom 2 as a base because of its strong arsenal and monster roster. Even if the main campaign isn’t to your taste, there’s bound to be a mod you’ll love.
