Explorers of Time downplayed the dungeons in favor of its story, emphasizing both the drama and the humor while retaining the enthusiasm of before. QoL adjustments and new items, mechanics and minigames only represent one half of this twin-headed upgrade. The other, more significant half refined the emotional impact of Blue/Red Rescue Team by allowing room for scenario-building, character interactions & development to prevail. Altogether, they amount to a much stronger narrative and a more cohesive, diverse cast of Pokemon this time, whose behavior (from comical to enigmatic, naive or deceitful) adds a sense of intrigue and unease to each chapter. With a resume consisting of Shiren the Wanderer and little else, it's hard to believe that these two roguelikes share the same literary brain. Despite some moments of silly or predictable writing, their work here is quintessential JRPG storytelling, full of twists and revelations that could achieve Breath of Fire III-esque degrees of sentimental power. Unfortunately, the dungeon-crawling is - again, not particularly creative or entertaining, but a greater reliance on status ailments and traps leaves hope for a less sterile future.
wowowow. i've had this game since i was a kid but never gave it a shot until recently and i'm so glad i finally did. the story is amazing, the characters are so well written, flushed out, and adorable, the soundtrack is so sweet, and the graphics are everything i love about 2d games. minus .5 because i find the battle play p frustrating, specifically when ur partners wander off in a dungeon and the game starts and stops every step, but its honestly not a huge nuisance given the fact that it doesn't happen enough and the rest of the game far and away makes up for it. I RECOMMEND THIS WHOLEHEARTEDLY, EVEN IF U DON'T PLAY THE MAIN POKEMON GAMES!!
I grew up playing this game. It’s honestly the single best Pokémon related plot ever conceived, with actual stakes and character development that’s unprecedented in the main series games. It’s a shame this kind of writing is stuck in a side game. Pokémon deserves some slightly more interesting stories.
A truly timeless (ha) game jam-packed with content and a shockingly deep story. I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece like some others would, but that doesn’t mean it’s not great, with likable characters and some excellent presentation. The themes of the game hit hard and really are beautiful, and the game itself is fun to play even long after the story has ended. It’s very, very good, and every Pokémon fan should give it a go if they can. Even better, they should probably play the complete version (Explorers of Sky) that I unfortunately haven’t played yet. I’ll get to it eventually.
a marked improvement over Red and Blue Rescue Team in every single way. the gameplay is what you'd expect in a Pokemon rougelike - get to the next floor, beat other Pokemon on the floor, and maybe find some treasures along the way...
but the story is what most people come to this series for, and this story is.... pretty good!! there's some high stakes and the characters are all great, even if I have some personal gripes about poor explanations throughout the story ("what's the Dimensional Scream? well in the future we used it to find Time Gears. oh it doesn't work that way in the present? well maybe it works differently here" with no elaboration or interest for the rest of the game).
still have to dock half a star for doing Team Raiders dirty
