Skullgirls is a fairly endearing if a bit risque fighting game that served to set the example that more than one FG can use rollback netcode to immense success, while oozing pure style and fluidity. It was also one of the earlier examples of an actually good in-game tutorial and walkthrough, making it by far one of the best on-boarders to the genre short of getting a veteran to coach you personally.

The music is lovely and the stage selection while literally just a flat line in physicality offers a lot of nice variety in tone and mood, preventing sessions from feeling stale so much; not to mention the countless character-on-character specific battle intro/outros, you can tell so much care went into this despite what's apparently pretty awful working environ- wait, I'm getting something...

Oh noeys my broskis, sisterinos and they/themmings, they're removing content from a game I haven't booted up in 6 years!

W-what content? U-um, yknow, stuff like uh..

sexual comments involving minors, allegorical nazi imagery, a few pantyshots, the announcer voiced by the creepy ass ex-CEO(/director?)..

This level of censorship is proof western civilization can only dream of creating masterworks such as Bakemonogatari.

Just remember to fight that good fight and not buy Skullgirls for the third time, /a/lrighty?

lmfao get real. Favorite piece from the OST.

Fellas if your girl:
Has long hair;
White woman normals;
And is neutral on block from a fucking low fierce;
That's not your girl, that's 80% of Skullgirls cast.

this is my favorite fighting game of ALL TIME.

i'll get it out of the way right now and say i'm a huge fighting game versus fan; casual players admittedly might not get a lot from the experience apart from pretty art, music & animations since the story modes are fun, but kinda barebones. this game doesn't have much of a singleplayer experience. i won't be rating it on that, as my experiences with fighting games revolve entirely around the versus modes & community content created around the game & it's world-- i just don't play the singleplayer modes. if you love this game's atmosphere but prefer singleplayer content, the mobile version of skullgirls might be right up your alley! it's got loads more story content and lots more casual-friendly stuff while keeping the same beautiful art, animations, music and characters.

now that THAT'S out of the way...

THIS GAME'S MIXUPS ARE BASED ALMOST ENTIRELY OFF OF HOW CREATIVELY YOU CAN DROP YOUR COMBOS. HOW FUCKING COOL IS THAT? WHEN PEOPLE TALK "SELF-EXPRESSION" IN FIGHTING GAMES THEY TEND TO BE REALLY VAGUE. BUT WHEN SKULLGIRLS ENCOURAGES DROPPING YOUR COMBOS AT ANY POINT YOU WANT FOR NASTY RESETS, ALLOWS YOU TO PICK ANY NUMBER OF CHARACTERS & LETS YOU USE ANY MOVE IN ANY CHARACTER'S ARSENAL AS ASSISTS, YOU CAN'T DENY THAT WHATEVER THE FGC THINKS "SELF-EXPRESSION" IS, THIS IS PROBABLY THE PEAK OF IT

THE PERSONALITY OF THE ENTIRE CAST IS OFF THE CHARTS, EVERY CHARACTER IS SO CREATIVE IN THEIR DESIGN, STORY AND GAMEPLAY. I FUCKING LOVE BIG BAND & BEOWULF. PEACOCK IS AMAZING. I LOVE BREAKING ANKLES WITH FILIA. MY BRAIN IS TOO SMALL FOR MS. FORTUNE. WHY DID THEY GIVE DOUBLE A POLITICIAN VOICE PACK. FUCKING AWESOME

THE OST IS FUCKING AWESOME AND FITS THIS GAME'S HECTIC PACE PERFECTLY. THIS IS THE BEST USE OF JAZZ IN A FIGHTING GAME SINCE MVC2. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT JAZZ IMPROV IS KINDA LIKE DROPPING YOUR AIR COMBO TO RUN UNDER THE OPPONENT AND THEN DOUBLE CROSSUP BY AIRDASHING OVER THEM AGAIN AS THEY FALL

AS SOON AS YOU UNDERSTAND HOW OTGS IN THIS GAME WORK YOU CAN MAKE SHIT HAPPEN FROM LITERALLY ANYTHING AND IT'S AMAZING. THE CONVERSIONS YOU CAN GET IN THIS GAME ARE SO SATISFYING. EVERY TIME I GET A COMBO OFF A SUPER THE NEURONS IN MY BRAIN THROW A FUCKING PIZZA PARTY

THE SKULLGIRLS LAUNCH PARTY IS STILL GOING STRONG BABY. AS OF THIS REVIEW IT'S BEEN 10 YEARS, 1 MONTH AND 13 DAYS SINCE SKULLGIRLS' RELEASE AND WE'VE ONLY JUST BEGUN SEASON 1.

I FUCKING LOVE SKULLGIRLS

SKULLGIRLS FOREVER WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Very cool art style with great character designs and responsive combat.

I fucking HATE this game. Overall, pretty fun! Would play again!

european people pronounce it like "schoolgirls" kinda f'd up

one of the first games i bought on steam.
This game is Beautiful, it Has Really Good Music, The Art Style is Really Good And it's a Good Fighting game.
Literally Perfect nothing to Complain About.
Now I Just Need To Platinum it.

highly stylized fighting game. i'm not usually a fighting game player but sometimes i'll get an itch for skullgirls and gawk at the visuals and all the little details put in to the game, then stop playing after i've had my butt kicked a few times. fortunately this game actually has a really great tutorial but even after playing through that and looking up other guides on the game, i think i can say i really tried it but it doesn't click with me. still admire everything about it though

Thanks, Zone for showing me Skullgirls!

i dont care for 99% of this game but big band is a top 5 character design and unfinished business goes hard

One time, someone in the fighting game channel of one of the main Discord servers I use abbreviated this game's name as Skugs and one of the main mods found it so funny that he decided to change one of the mod bots to automatically give a one day ban to anyone who says the actual name instead of Skugs (His justification was that most people in the server only brought up the game to shit on it). What followed was a saga of people trying to use "Skugs" in every context possible and/or trick people into saying the cursed word, people getting banned for posting a link with the cursed word in it, and someone trying to use a loophole to get past the filter before a mod who had it out for him gave him a one day ban anyway. I only played this game for like 10 hours when I was like 15 and too stupid to realize that playing a fighter on a keyboard probably isn't the best idea but I have to give it my upmost thanks because of the immense joy and entertainment I have gotten from the Skugs Saga.

this game is a great litmus test for if someone is a loser or not because if they actually get upset that 2 frames of an underaged girls panties were removed from a game and go on to cry censorship you know definitively that theyve never had sex

that being said the game fuckin rules, always has ruled, always will rule

The recent drama is so dumb.
I don't think the changes were needed, however they're insignificant and not even worth consider abandoning the game for.

People acting like it's the end of society.
They can express their disagreement with the changes, but this is ridiculous.
As long as you don't cover Ms. Fortune's midriff we're alright, ok devs?

Anyways the game is amazing, beautifuly animated, it plays really well and the cast and story modes are very enjoyable. Also it's cheap as fuck. Just play some Skullgirls.

RIP Soviet Announcer, the only true loss from the last update, i'll miss you (also the most understandable removal tbh)

copying this from my steam review, this game('s music for the most part) is incredibly nostalgic to me, and also hella good
the character designs are all sick, and the amount of creativity you can put into any one fight, both cosmetic and actual gameplay-wise, is insane
genuinely my second favorite game of all time, i love v much

Edit: Once I grew past the age of 17, I've noticed that some things were overstated in this review. Skullgirls is good, but not second coming of christ good. I'll still keep this review up (it was originally 4 or 5 stars) but I don't hold the same hype for this game as much as before because I've moved onto better fighters. Besides, the constant discourse around the game is tiresome and I don't want to be part of it.

this game is so awesome and it got me interested in fighting games again because street fighter v and smash bros are boring as FUCK... this game isn't! there's something surprising and new to learn from this game each time i play and i love the mechanics. the story is great, the gameplay is great, the soundtrack is great, the animation is sakuga goodness... this is everything i want in a fighting game

Oh boy... this game was excellent in its day, I followed along with it from the OG publisher to the Kickstarter days.
it was one of the best arcade fighters for a WHILE.

BUT

DO NOT PLAY IN ITS CURRENT STATE.
current owners have fired all the original devs and deleted content people paid for because it was deemed offensive.
I don't care what your opinion of 'offensive' material is, you don't get to remove content people paid for.

loved the game when I played it, but the new devs just kept removing artwork because it was "too lewd\sexual" even from the artbook, the stuff removed from the artbook wasn't even replaced, and let me remind you, you buy the artbook separately, that's just sad, even more sad when you know that they deleted the angry fans reviews on steam

This game is good as an overall game but great as a fighting game. Fun and doesn't take itself too serious. Plays like MvC2 so it scratches that itch of playing a tag team type fighting game.

I think the best part of this game is the tutorial section it gives in depth instructions not only on how to play Skull Girls but gives fundamental lessons about mastering a fighting game in general.

game has pretty characters:0

if it wasn't so oversexualized, the bar wasn't absolute shit, and it wasnt a tag team, it would be a good fighting game

DIVERTIDO PRA DESGRACAAAA

uma pena que eu seja ruim :(

We Skullgirls fans may be horny but dang are we good at fighting games
