It's a fun versus shmup, patience is rewarded as the goal is to destroy the bigger enemies which cause an explosion an then chain-kill the smaller enemies. This will send a projectile to the enemy, which can then be sent back to you by destroying it as an "enhanced"(faster/glowy) projectile and if you send this projectile back to your opponent, it will send a special attack which is different for each character.

The more you play, the more you start noticing the same patterns.

Each stage has different models for the monsters, different songs, backgrounds, etc. The music is very good, it has high-energy vibes.

There are some slowdowns when there is a lot happening on screen, it can actually be helpful to understand what's going on as there can be a lot on the screen at once.

The AI is weird. Sometimes it will dodge everything you throw at it in stage 1 and other times it will fail in stage 5 in the first 20 seconds. Your best bet is to try and do as many chain attacks as possible and survive for as long as possible, but the CPU can move faster than you so it can dodge stuff you can't. In the end, you get the feeling it all boils down to a little bit of luck.

I recommend this one. One run is around 20-30 minutes, beating it with every character took me around 7 hours.

meia horinha de tédio e créditos infinitos. queria jogar isso aqui multiplayer, deve dar uma briga legal

I feel like this game is one of the inspirations for Touhou

queen memory kicked my ass until i kinda stopped paying attention and somehow won.

the bad:
the un-smash-able projectiles are really rude and uhh sometimes the sprites are hard to discern against the colorful backgrounds, especially when many things are flying around.

the good:
one of my favorite shmups for real. such a fun silly joyful game.

Edit: Who am i kidding this game is fucking awsome. 5 stars

I grinded basically an entire day to get a 1cc of this. Thank you neo-geo AI.

A very fun competitive shmup with cute visuals that is pretty much the granddaddy of the subgenre. Puzzle style mechanics are utilised well to create an addictive gameplay loop of racking up chains and timing your shots well enough to reflect your opponent's bullets back at them. That said, this is much more fun when played against other people because some of the things that make this game so fun for casual competition against other humans make it annoying to play against AI opponents.

panel de pon meets touhou meets smash meelee

Great art and music but some of the later stages require certain strategies to even do shit. Was fun until that.

Very fun scrolling shooter with then-unique competitive 1v1 gameplay,. I love the little things that make up this game. Cute character designs with classic 90s style, excellent music overall, and overall a cool atmosphere. The charge system is basic but neat way to give control to the gameplay.

Only thing that sorta bothers me is how the character designs can feel derivative of Puyo Puyo. The inspiration is obvious for some of the characters. But I still like them.

Cute competitive shmup, probably the inspiration for the Phantasmagoria Touhou games. Which are my least favorite Touhou games, but it's a fun enough concept.

Fun to play and has a cute cast of characters. My only real complaint is that the characters don't really feel that different to play. The only major difference is in their special attacks and since those all take place on your opponent's side it doesn't really make your experience all that different.

It's alright, I suppose. I can see why people like this but the gameplay doesn't do much for me, really. Maybe it's one of those games were it gets better when you get better at it, but for the moment, I'm not too crazy about this one.

fun versus shmup where you shoot waves to send extra enemies to your opponent, conceptually similar to puyo but maybe more akin to mario 35 nowadays. it's really good but also doesn't have as much in the way of content or variety as other games in this style.

Twelfth GOTW finished for 2024. Cool concept of mixing SHMUPS with a competitive match-puzzle game like Kirby's Avalanche. I got the basic idea behind the gameplay and the controls, but I beat the entire game and I'm STILL not sure I actually knew what I was doing. Pure chaos in the later levels, and that final boss was a massive difficulty spike that I feel like I only somehow scraped through. Neat idea, cute sprites and characters, just didn't gel with this one. Maybe it's better in multiplayer.

Inconsistent AI makes it feel like chaos in single-player, but it's a novel and fun multi-player proposal, a tactical 1v1 take on the shmup clearly inspired by match-puzzle games. Quick and dirty matches. I think the Dreamcast version is better, though. Also: very very cute

I think that any game can be truly exceptional if they just take a genre and make it Tetris Attack. Twinkle Star Sprites proves it. Such a cool concept for a game, lot of potential to go up as I dig into its deeper mechanics, just a fun little time to learn with a charming nonsense of a set-up and aesthetics!

I don't need the final boss telling me how many continues it took me to reach him. That's none of his business.

Such an ingenious concept that works way more well than you may expect

competitive shoot em up thats awesome

Really cute shmup with competitive puzzle game elements and a fun little story mode. Fights are a bit too quick for my liking and don't really get me the fix a normal shmup would.

Desperately trying to get your friends who hate anime to play one of the most shit-talky competitive games ever with you.

A very unique concept: combine shmups with a one-on-one competitive puzzle game. Much like Puyo Puyo, this game has cute characters, good music, and good gameplay.

Me: Im taking shots of Dr. Pepper instead of alcohol during the backloggd tournament of twinkle star sprites!

Society: ok

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Squidward: hello

Society: Holy shit Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Squidward

Twinkle Stars Drunkers (official tournament rules):

- Take a shot whenever you lose a round.
- Reveal at least one personal truth after every 2 matches lost.
- If you notice your opponent is getting drunk, it's highly recommended to terrorize them by replying with ominous messages such as they are here or the feast has begun when they're at K.O. range.

While the looks of it may be cutesy and simple this is a very competitive PvP SHMUP: the enemies are pretty simple but the real challenge comes from preparing chains and charging up for boss attacks all while avoiding your opponent's attack. It's a very unique idea and for the most part it works, although I wish you could select what stage to play on

underrated, a shame they never made a sequel that expanded upon this

very unique versus game, theres not a whole lot of content but whats here is very fun for what its worth
