Being a big fan of the Paper Mario series, this game really highlighted and exemplified what I love about the series. Charming world, turn-based combat with action commands to reduce the monotony, and funny characters and scenarios. My main gripe is that it ends all too soon and the game doesn't offer much of a challenge, even with Culex.
Honestly even for a SNES rpg seemingly made for kids this is kind of bad considering Crystalis is an NES game with a stronger charm to it.
I don't know, it was really hard to like this game. Combat 99% of the time is timed attack on every character, with every other way of doing damage being completely sub-optimal until maybe the superboss (the other 1% being using a heal if necessary). The aesthetic also hasn't aged well at all, but at least it's unique.
But what was ultimately the most disappointing was the writing, which feels very phoned in as far as Squaresoft is concerned, and moreso compared to the rest of the series that comes after with Intelligent Systems. I can only think of like... 2 jokes I laughed at? There was the one where Mario pulls up an umbrella when Mallow is about to cry again, and there's also the whole wedding scene which is worth a chuckle.
But otherwise it's a very boneless, unsatisfying experience. I don't even understand the idealization of Geno. His character literally goes as far as 5 lines of dialogue about himself and that's it. I'm sure there's a lot of nostalgia and childlike wonder that was felt maybe for people who played this when they were like 5 or 6, but otherwise I think this is one of the worse rpgs I've had the 'benefit' of finishing.

I booted up a save file that's 3 years old saying hey, I've gotten pretty far in this game a few times, no reason to reset. Apparently I was like 3 hours away from the ending so I just beat it. The ending section isn't great because it has some really bad forced platforming, but I also need to remember the fact that the first like 90% of the game is just fantastic.
I think Geno is cool.
I think Mallow is lame.
I like Princess Peach

Love the era of Mario this comes from, where Nintendo would still let third-party developers get real weird with the characters and world, here Square created something really different that actually ended up influencing how these characters are portrayed, as well as the two Mario RPG series that came after it. It's unfortunate Nintendo from allowing something like this to now being furious at the idea of letting Intelligent Systems give a Koopa a different colored shell.
This was such a charming game, genuinely fun and genuinely funny. The story is compelling without getting bogged down in unnecessary drama (this is a Mario game after all), and the gameplay was simple but also unique enough to feel fresh.
Would definitely be in the conversation for best RPGs ever made, but for the fact that the player is required to do platforming jumps from an isometric 3/4 overhead view on a controller that doesn't handle diagonals very well. The platforming segments can get pretty painful.
