This was a really cool game that I wish had a little bit more Resident Evil going on in it.

A great horror experience dripping with great atmosphere, a surprisingly good story, great environments that reminded a lot of Silent Hill 2, and that classic resident evil gameplay modernized in all the right places.

This game is pretty bad. The issue I have with it is that Resident Evil jumpscares usually feel like something you can anticipate. If you enter a one exit room with a corpse in it, you can be pretty sure he's gonna get up the moment you take the key item in the back. Predicting th jumpscare feels like a reward for attentiveness to game design. In this game, the jumpscares feel like the result of enemies magically teleporting to places that they cannot be. I was left feeling bored because the tension wouldn't build by giving me enough clues that a jumpscare was coming and letting me work myself up by wondering when it would hit.

Very strong first half, jumps the shark completely in the second half. After the colossal failure of RE6, the insecurity of the devs is on full display here. Cramming every single horror trope into a single game and hoping something sticks. Luckily, everything inside the Baker residence is extremely effective horror! Jack makes a great spiritual successor to Mr. X and Nemesis and the entire place is dripping with tension and atmosphere. Sadly this all falls to the wayside about halfway through, embodying many of the more annoying aspects of the Resident Evil series. Still, a decent course correction that leads the series into a far more interesting direction.

ethan will always deserve better than what he received

Great story, and amazing atmosphere. Boss fights felt very cool and satisfying to beat. Definitely one of the best in the series.

I found it very good. The only thing that bothered me was how difficult it was to kill certain enemies on normal mode, but other than that, everything else was enjoyable to play.

Really good first quarter, second quarter falls off a little bit, last half is pretty good

Absolutely great game that saved the series and finally went back to its roots, but man I wish the second (more or less) half of the game was as good as the first.

Also, very good DLCs.

This made me realize one thing about myself. I love horror movies but I hate horror games. I just can't find myself being the one in those kinds of situation. It's super stressful and you have to be really clever and powerful to beat it. RE7 is my first horror game experience and while it took me too long to finish it despite the short story, it still felt like a smooth playthrough as the story was set in one night.

This might be my favorite Resident Evil game, if I'm being honest. It has a very cinematic feel but, not quite a Hollywood one, more like the Poughkeepsie tapes meets Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Don't get me wrong, i love 4 and 2 just as much as anyone, but this shit is scary as fuck. It gets under my skin in a way the rest of the franchise doesn't. The first person perspective and claustrophobic environment work together in a way that just makes you feel doomed from the very beginning. Which you are.

one of the best horror in my experience

one of the few games to actually ever make me scared, i really dislike the boat at the end

Played in one sitting, 8 hours
Only played through the entire story and a bit of 21. There's one thing in 21 that is an absolute time waster of a gimmick that I can only recommend to play the Roblox equivalent of this gamemode coincidentally called Twenty One.

Generally, it's good. Quality, runs pretty well even on what you'd call.. 2013 hardware?
Story's alright, never been a lore nerd so it wasn't a high priority. Would entice someone else though.

Everything before the ship part was pure comedy horror gold

First resident evil game ever keep coming back and replaying short and sweet and a well deserved return to form

I've finished the campaign on normal but haven't gotten to the DLC yet. Still, I wanted to jot down my thoughts quickly. Overall, really great! I can understand the praise it's gotten as a revitalisation of the franchise. I came into this having seen the Scary Game Squad playthrough way back in the day, but that was what got me interested in the franchise to begin with. Now I've finally gotten here and I got to revisit this with the experience of the franchise behind me, and I think it was a lot richer for it.

I think this game starts off just okay, with lots of deaths and trial and error. The switch to first person is a part of this, as now it's not just a survival horror where inventory management is rewarded, but also accuracy. I found switching to mouse and keyboard from a controller made the game dramatically easier.

It was also cool to see both the series influence and general horror inspirations in this game. Unlike something like Alan Wake 2, this game is firmly in the realm of B-horror and camp (if moreso in the general plot and homage of the game than direct tone like previous entries). Seeing the mansion exploration component in the first person with the creepy vibes of the bayou was a great blend of new and familiar. Interestingly, the southern murder family tone reminded me a lot of the 2000s gritty horror reboots kicked off by Texas Chainsaw Massacre, similarly taking a once great franchise that had run its course into a totally new direction. Specific parts of the game also make the homage to both the original and rebooted Texas Chainsaw very clear.

I also really enjoyed the atmosphere of the tanker section. RE is no stranger to the setting, and I'm glad that it somehow made a return here. Navigating the space despite a busted elevator was fun, although it really felt totally separated from the main game with an inventory reset. I think the reset was a bit of a crux as RE's formula doesn't work with late game horror, but rather builds towards a late game power fantasy.

I think the plot overall was a bit weak. I understand the want to start fresh with new characters and events that are only loosely tied back to the original, but I think the family (and especially Jack Baker) do the heavy lifting in terms of this game's iconography, and after that the events and people of the story become less memorable. Especially Eveline who feels like the most trope laden character in the series, and that says a lot when we remember it's RE we're talking about. That being said, the plot was serviceable and it facilitated really strong gameplay. I think that's a way better outcome than if plot and gameplay's quality were reversed.

Obviously I have a lot to say about this one. Overall, I really liked it! I'm curious to see how the threads of the ending are tied together in RE8, if they are at all.

First-Person Resident Evil may be favorite style of it, however you can definitely tell this was their first time doing a game like this. As much as I liked the gameplay loop and the story for the first half, the game still has a lot of the boring goop monsters, and can also lag on in certain areas for too long.
