I've rated 3 stars and yes I still haven't beaten the game

This game is a legend. The camera is a bit wonky, but that is my only complaint with it.
It says something that this is one of the most active speedrunning games out there 27 years later.
The ROM hacks are a blast for it, too.

Didn't expect to enjoy this so much and I really don't have much to fault. Camera is a bit janky, yeah, but it's from 1996 and honestly, it's really not that bad. The graphics, level design, and music all have such a great character about them and the game is just 100% focused on fun.

I went into this expecting to blitz through and just complete the levels but ended up getting all 120 stars because it was too fun to put down. I always thought I preferred linear Mario games but, actually, jumping into the levels to get the different stars gave them a lot more depth and made them more memorable. Awesome game.

Awkward controls made manageable by simple levels, pretty fun

Mario 64 can be hard to control, and a lot of its level designs are kinda weird. But it also has a high skill ceiling for players who want to take the game to the next level.
Playing the game with complex techniques feels amazing, and certainly improves the experience of an otherwise okay 3D platformer.

Classic, still my favourite Mario game. Replayed it and 100% it a couple years ago

WAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!

liked it a lot more this time than I did on my last playthrough but tiny huge island is still godawful and I probably still prefer most of the other 3d Marios lol

Was worried this would severely show its age, but it was surprisingly innovative and incredibly fun.

The best 3D platformer, which I'm still not sure if it being that makes the genre shambolic or not. Fantastic mechanics that allow for a flexibility in traversal that is super fun to master and addicting.

A classic and an incredible entry into the 3D era for Mario. This game is burned into my muscle memory.

Mario 64 is the first video game I remember playing, so it's impossible for me to review it objectively. That being said, this game changed my life and I like it more than I like you.

objectively this game probably isn't 4.5 stars, but to me it is, the controls are still the best mario has seen. the level-design plays into what you can do with mario so well, the soundtrack is amazing and collecting 120 stars is always fun.

Changed videogames forever. 5 stars no brainer

Adulthood is realizing the internet was wrong and games were not actually better in the 90s

this game's movement is so good that every time i see a large gap like a train platform i immediately imagine a little low poly italian man long jumping across. this is what real artistic influence is, none of that shakespeare shite

First time somewhat seriously played this and finished in 2022. They were still figuring out controls, but game designed for all of that.
I wish I played that back then

Despite the older 2D Marios showing their age and the mid-2010s 3D platformer revival being largely disappointing, somehow Mario 64 still plays like gold. When the hell are they gonna make Mario 65??

cmon man it's SUPER MARIO in 3-D

When people think of Mario 64 you can think of a few things depending on a few things. You either think of the fun of Bom-Bomb Battlefield, flying with the wing cap, or climbing Whomps’s Fortress. Or you think of falling off of Rainbow Ride because you moved slightly to the left, climbing up Tick-Tock Clock to collect all 7 stars, or just the general frustration with the camera.
I think both of these points are valid but I think what completely overrides the negatives is the amount of MODS this game has. I mean you have multiplayer, all new level, some people even made whole new games with the exact same engine! Personally I think M64’s biggest problem is the level design later on but the modding community is so creative and constantly working on a new project. With Mario’s excellent movement in this game people have made astonishing levels around it.
If you haven’t given some of them a shot I insist you do, heck they even added multiplayer to the game. Without mods M64 might’ve been a 3 1/2 or 4 but with them, which is really the only way to play, it’s just some of the best Mario gameplay you can get.

By far the most fun and exciting movement in any platformer, a lot of stars require treading the same ground though and a handful of worlds are a slog to complete. 100 coins works for a few stages but for the most part they aren't all too fun to collect. Timeless and held in high regard for great reason though.

Has a lot of charm and mario is fun to control, but I really hated the level design. So much so I think I stopped having fun with the game around wet dry world, I would of dropped but promised a friend I would beat so here we are.

I've grown up with this game serving as a constant presence in my life.

When I was younger, I used to look up how to emulate games just to play it. I used to run in circles around that fountain trying to unlock luigi for hours. I would watch people use gameshark hacks on youtube to moon jump to the top of the castle. I got the DS version for Christmas and played it every day, collecting everything and enjoying every minute. When All-Stars came out, I played it again. I even attempted a speedrun of this game at one point which is something I have never done before. It has been years since I first played it. When I first played the game, it was already old, and yet I was drawn to it despite its age. I am still playing this game today. I'm still enjoying it. I'm still loving it. It's been with me this whole time.

If that isn't the definition of a timeless game, I don't know what is.

super super solid 3D platformer i love playing it
