Vanquish hurts me, because it's such a fun game. Nothing else is quite like it, even games like ULTRAKILL, which share the core concept of "what if DMC was a shooter?" go a drastically different way. And in terms of gameplay, Vanquish is damn perfect. Every single action is so so satisfying, every mechanic is perfectly balanced with every other one, and there is so much depth while remaining very accessible.
And yet... that's it. There's nothing else to Vanquish. The story is the most basic military sci-fi shooter plot you could imagine. You've probably already thought of half its plot points, and you'll probably figure out the other half by the time you've seen the intro. The dialogue is boring, the characters are uncharismatic, and it even ends on a cliffhanger. The game is short, lacking in variety, reuses its bosses like it's a fetish and never truly feels like it's making the best use of its potential. And the reason that hurts so much, even though it's still a good game on its own, is that if it, or a sequel, had been capable of truly iterating on their mechanics, they'd have been a damn masterpiece.

Basically you're robocop destroying a whole russian robot army...
The story is so stupid that its actually so good including: cheesy one liners, one-puff smoking, grumpy old colonel, sexy tech-savy 'girldfriend', hillary clinton, cyborg-putin, etc.
The gameplay is super fast, great variety of enemy robots and guns, love the slow-mo attacks and some of the boss fights are actually quite tough. But don't expect something super deep or revolutionary, it's just a really fun arcade shooter with a pretty cool sliding mechanic.

Did you want to do meter management as you boost around from waist-high cover to waist-high cover, doing cool dynamic poses in slow motion while you shoot robots? Well, you SHOULD.
This game's presentation and set pieces are awesome. I love the voice-lines from SAM, the protag. I still quote them to this day.
Every weapon you pick up changes your melee attack and melee attacking almost always drains your meter completely. It's a fair trade off considering how powerful melee is. But this means you are encouraged to stay behind cover where you can. Which is strange for Platinum, who's known for really strong melee combat and rushing into the fray for some time bonus.
Picking up multiple stacks of the same gun upgrades the gun. There ends up being way too many upgrade levels per gun before you reach max in my opinion, resulting in maxing out one main weapon, and using your secondary slots for experimentation/ just messing around.
You'll end up leveling up grenades like mad because you'll forget you have them LOL. (They are really strong, please remember to use them.)
The music isn't very memorable, I'm struggling to remember anything that isn't the cool title screen ambiance.
The story is a tad uninspired and the ending is a total cliffhanger bummer.

Fun gameplay, but could've absolutely used refinement. A solid base that I would've very well liked a sequel to improve on, adding a bit of Platinum's flair to it in the form of upgrading your boosters and tweaking the weapon upgrade system. For its period it's an absolute blast of a game, but nowadays it doesn't quite hit as much. Wait for a sale, $20 is too much for it.
A interpretation of the 7th gen famous genre TPS by a japanese studio famous for it's Hack'n'Slash/Character Actions games with a lot of player expression and over the top action, it's seems a unlikely combination, but they managed to combine the two perfectly, it's one of the best games I've ever played and a must play for everyone
In my head this game started out as a parody of the mid-2000s trend of western studios bastardizing beloved japanese franchises, but along the way they just couldn't help but make the game Actually Good. Like, I imagine there was a planning meeting where somebody joked, "If an American studio made a Metal Gear Solid game, there probably wouldn't even be any stealth. You'd just run around smoking cigarettes and shooting robots... wait a minute, that's sick as hell"
In Vanquish you play as DARPA research assistant Sam, a cigarette-smoking jet.. man. After the cyber-Soviets microwave San Francisco, it's up to you to save the day.
If that sounds bizarre, well, the story is nonsensical, the writing is laughably bad and extremely cheesy (pro?) to the point you can't really understand anyone's real motives (..con). As for the gameplay: although it's fun, it doesn't really do more than run and gun. Or should that be "jet and reset"?.. over and over and over.
I will say that, yes, it looks incredible and may be one of the few examples of a rotating space habitat put to screen, but I'm torn as to whether I'd recommend anyone play Vanquish. Took me about 5 hours on easy (not easiest) mode. I kept coming back for more, so I guess it was just about worth my time.
