The Weezer Pinkertons of Video Games

Games that, like Weezer's Pinkerton Album, were underappreciated at launch but were eventually recognized as the creator's best work, and are followed up by games that backtracked heavily on its themes/mechanics. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Third Strike and Sonic CD

Sonic CD is excluded from the list as a personal rule. I will add Third Strike though.

either Saints Row 2 or maaaaybe KOTOR 2 depending if you think New Vegas fits the bill better
If any Sonic game were to be added on here, Unleashed would fit the bill much better, even if I don't really agree with it myself

As for my own suggestion, I'm tossing in Thousand Year Door

Pokemon Black/White 2 feels like it would fit the bill for that franchise

I'm not part of the metal gear gamer talker community so I might be super wrong about this but MGS2 has a 94 or something like that on metacritic, I don't see how it was underappreciated.

@HylianBran It’s more that at release there was a lot of pushback from fans, but overtime the game has become widely regarded similarly to Pinkerton.

Pokemon BW2 is also banned from this list for personal reasons.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter would probably count. It got slammed at release due it to be a dungeon-crawling rogue-like in a series that had been otherwise traditional JRPG, a decade before rogue-likes starting becoming a popular genre. Nowadays its been reappraised and considered one of the best in the series.
