As my first experience with Super Mario RPG, this was fantastic. It scratched the itch I was having for a game akin to old-school Paper Mario (it helps that the original SMRPG basically laid the groundwork for what PM would go on to do), and it's beautiful how much they respected the original game when crafting this remake. It may have taken 27 years, but I'm happy to see Nintendo bring this back out, and the fact that they brought it out in such a wonderful way is icing on the cake. And as Nintendo's final major release of 2023...goddamn, what an amazing year for them.

Finally played it for the first time for a Game Pass quest.

It was cute and relaxing, but I'm already feeding my Vampire Survivors and Slay the Spire obsessions, I can't have a third game to get addicted to (granted, this isn't the kind of game I typically get addicted to, but...hey, neither was Vampire Survivors or Slay the Spire).

Probably would've enjoyed it more if I had friends that played it in multiplayer, but I did like it better than the first one, I'll give it that.

Games that don't let me actually "pause" the gameplay even when I'm playing offline are a pet peeve of mine. I know "it's a design choice," but it's one I'm personally not fond of.

As for the game itself...it's fine.

2020

Whether or not it plays better than the 2020 release, I can't say because I didn't play this remake when it first came out.

With that said...son, what the hell is this?

I played the PlayStation 4 version and it never felt like the timing between my button presses and the game were in sync.

And yet, it was still better than the remake of the first game.

I love the concept of the game, and I'm glad it's recently been re-issued on PlayStation 5 so people can re-experience it...but goddamn, that frame rate is really choppy. It's kinda hard to play today.

Still gonna advocate for an entirely new game. The concept is too cool and it would be refreshing compared to other racers.

I played it for a Game Pass quest where all I had to do was clean up some poop.

I'm stretching the limits of what I can log here, but that counts, right?

Well, it was fun for about 10 minutes…

I enjoyed the first game but, to me, this is a leaps and bounds improvement over it. Much more feature-packed and polished, and the fighting mechanics are so much better this time around. It feels like the devs at Ludosity were actually given some time to let it cook this time around, and it feels like NASB is really coming into its own here. Given how much I kept coming back to the first game, I see myself spending a lot of time with this one.

I played this through a browser version someone was able to make. Pretty insane.

Fun ass game, but yeah, it's pretty challenging.

When I heard this would be a direct sequel to Smooth Moves, I was very excited, as that's one of my favorite WarioWare games. Even though some of the Forms feel a bit finicky, this was pretty much everything I could've wanted in a Smooth Moves sequel. All the trademark WarioWare charm and humor is here in spades.

It was pretty, I guess.

I probably would've stuck with it longer, but I just finished playing one developer's art project (Alan Wake II). I can only do so much.

It feels weird to give a game an 8/10 and say "I was disappointed," but honestly...I was kind of expecting to like Alan Wake II a bit more. The first game is one of my all-time favorites and I was pumped for the move to survival horror, but while I liked the game a lot, it felt lacking in some areas.

Like yes, there was plenty of creativity to the writing and attention to detail, but the gameplay didn't grip me nearly as much as I hoped it would. I almost feel like I enjoy it more as a "work of art" than as a "game," and that's kind of upsetting. It's still very good, don't get me wrong, but I don't know if it's a game I'll return to super often in the future.

Nintendo's been spoiling me this year between TOTK, Metroid Prime Remastered, Pikmin 4, and now this (and plenty of other stuff, too).

God, this game is unbelievably creative. It was like every other level, I kept thinking "What in the world are they gonna do next?" And then they did something insane. I don't know if it's my ABSOLUTE favorite 2D Mario game (Super Mario World is incredibly tough to surpass), but this is another reminder of why Super Mario Bros. remains one of my all-time favorite franchises in gaming.
