Tweentieth GOTW finished for 2022. Fun PC-Engine action-adventure. Some light RPG elements help turn a brutally difficult game in the beginning into a much more palatable adventure game by the end. Your character and weapons (through in-game shops) get progressively stronger as the game progresses. Four different characters with different styles gives some replay value. Overall, I enjoyed my time with this one!

So, I finally got around to the one that started it all, the grandaddy of one of the most famous franchises. The music is great, the characters are fun, and it's neat to see Disney and Final Fantasy characters interacting in the same world. I could definitely see young me loving this one. However, there are plenty of flaws with this one. The level design is rough, the encounter rate is unreal, and the potentially exciting combat is marred by atrocious camera controls. A new coat of paint in the Final Mix don't fix that camera.

I'm interested in seeing what else the series has to offer, but for now I'm marking this as a promisingly bumpy start.

Second GOTM finished for September 2022. I can recognize that this is a phenomenal and influential game, and I had a blast playing it. It's amazing what they've managed to pack into this game, but it's certainly not a masterpiece. The game overstays its welcome a bit if you play through to the "true ending", and many of these awesome secrets and hidden areas lead to items that would've been better off remaining hidden (if you can even figure out how to access them without a guide). The gameplay is still fun, and the music is just amazing. A fun ride, but not a defining one for me.

Seventeenth GOTW finished for 2022. This one gets some points for wackiness and just down right what-the-f*ckery, but it really wasn't that enjoyable to play. Clunky controls, weird spaces of absolutely no music or sound, and poor descriptions/translations don't help its case. Crazy short, so there's that...

Eighteenth GOTW finished for 2022. Absolutely loved this one. Played on the "Bumpy" difficulty, and it felt plenty hard. Favorite "cute-em up" I've played so far. Magic system and directional firing felt good, the shop system was interesting and well placed, and I really felt like I was getting better as the game went on. Great game!

Finished alongside Oracle of Ages as first GOTM for September 2022. This is part of a duo of Capcom-created GBC games in the Legend of Zelda series. The games could be played separately, and then "linked" together via secret code provided upon beating one of the games to extend the story and provide additional upgrades and story beats.

Seasons provides a mechanic where the player alters the environment amongst the four seasons, and is the more action-centric of the two, with focus on shorter and spicier overworld sequences and more kinetic, fast-paced bosses and dungeons focused on action sequences and platforming. The pacing in Seasons is great, and there were multiple instances where the gameplay felt frenetic and exciting. The nature of changing the environment potentially four different ways can lead to some backtracking, but the differences between each season were enough to keep even the same areas feeling fresh and exciting.

While I played the standalone version as a child, I played this time as a "Linked" game after beating Ages, and the additional story segments, upgraded items/weapons, and two additional bosses were a blast. Highly recommended!

First GOTM finished for September 2022. This is part of a duo of Capcom-created GBC games in the Legend of Zelda series. The games could be played separately, and then "linked" together via secret code provided upon beating one of the games to extend the story and provide additional upgrades and story beats.

Ages provides a mechanic where the player moves in time between the past and present, and is the more puzzle-centric of the two, with focus on longer and more elaborate overworld sequences and more deliberate, slow-paced bosses and dungeons focused on solving puzzles. The purposefulness of slowing the game down to accomplish more intricate puzzles can sometimes leave the game feeling sluggish, though the gameplay is still good and the music is great. Played this one as a child, and it was great to revisit. Recommended!

Second RPGotQQ played for 2022. This one pretty easily makes its way into my top RPGs of all time. For spending roughly 50 hours on it, the pacing in this game is excellent. You really get the feeling of a "zero to hero" adventurer story. The characters are generally pretty well written and the battle system is just superb. I only have two issues with the game, and they're relatively small. The English voice acting can be pretty flat and uninspiring, and the lack of maps combined with environments that look pretty similar can lead to feeling lost or turned around more than you'd probably want.

It's been a while since I played a game for this long, and I absolutely loved this one.

Sixteenth GOTW finished for 2022. Varied weapon types are always a plus in an older game, but this one felt painfully sluggish throughout. Cutscenes were slow, walking was slow, jumping was slow. Just didn't feel that fun to play. At least the bosses were a fun experience and somewhat of a challenge.

Fifteenth GOTW finished for 2022. Nothing I'll remember, but the nostalgia trip was real as soon as the theme song kicked in. Fun little fighting game, laughably easy until the last two fighters. Not sure if it was good for a fighting game, but I enjoyed it nonetheless!

Third GOTM finished for August 2022. This game ran really middle-of-the-road for me for many reasons. I ended up playing all six endings (mostly because I got the three bad endings first, all in a row) and it really felt tedious by the last ending. There were some parts of the dialogue and story options that were great, but plenty of others that were juvenlie and just plain poor. Luckily, the Nonary Games version on Vita was a great way to play the game, as it allowed me to skip to certain parts with less replay for branching storylines. If I had to replay from the beginning each time, I would've long abandoned this one. Ultimately, I was glad to have played it, and it puts the sequels on my radar, but I doubt I'll be coming back anytime soon.

Second GOTM finished for August 2022. What a great game! Story was a little nonsensical, but the music was good and the gameplay was phenomenal. The 2.5D graphics were great, and lent themselves to some great gameplay moments and level design. Characters were cute and fun. Really felt like I was getting better and better with the movement and platforming as the game went on, which led to some really satisfying moments. Had a blast with this one!

Fourteenth GOTW finished for 2022. Fun, though incredibly nonsensical game. Enough different spell types to keep things interesting, and pretty easy in terms of difficulty for a shmup. Short and sweet!

What a great game! Maybe it was coming from the previous SNES SMTs that made this feel like a breath of fresh air, but I had a blast playing this game. I played the PSP version with PS1 music overlay, and the soundtrack on this game is absolutely killer. The gameplay was enjoyable, the story was decent, and the art style aged pretty well. Some of the level spikes can be a surprise at the beginning of new dungeons, but so many welcome new changes made the gameplay feel good most of the time. The last two dungeons are quite long, and the encounter rate is pretty high throughout, but still enjoyed my time with this one.

First GOTM finished for August 2022. What a fantastic little gem of a game! Based on stories from a famous Japanese author, this game was a real treat. It was relaxing to play, the music was unbelievable, and the pixel art was gorgeous. It didn't take very long, at about four or five hours, but I enjoyed every minute. Absolutely recommended this gem!
