Steam Next-Fest June 2022

Damn that was sick, a shame I couldn't play more

Holy fuck this is promising. The art is amazing, the music is BUSSIN, and I like the idea of a dungeon-crawler combining with some sort of a city-builder (or what do you call these games where you take care of a comminity and grow your population and shit??). Pre-ordered this one even though I never pre-order. Looking forward to a good time in August!

We Who Are About to Die
We Who Are About to Die
This one is THE most slept on game from this Next-Fest, and it saddens me. It's not perfect, and currently it's impossible to judge how the roguelike side of WWAATD (what a dumb name) shapes up, but this was a super fun brainless coleseum fantasy made real. Hope the perfromance issues get fixed by release, as it suffers from some weird stutters for some weird reasons.

Midnight Fight Express
Midnight Fight Express
I liked the music and the premise and how this game balances Hotline Miami-style badassery with a goofy self-aware plot, but the characters look like they came out of a stock character-model library, and the combat feels a bit random right now. Still, it was fun whaling on the guys, and completeing challenges, and speedrunning levels you've already completed. Good arcade fun, all in all.

Terra Nil
Terra Nil
It's extremely soothing and pleasant, but right now I'm not sure why you would play this game for more than 40 mintues. It seems that the premise will run out of steam pretty fast if the demo is any indication, and I don't know how a full game will fare. But it is fairly promising as a sort of puzzle game about terraforming a toxic wasteland (Backloggd), which I can definitely see myself enjoying

Frogun

I know people think this one is just a bad N64-style platformer for babies, but I loved my time with it BECAUSE it's so simple and clearely geared towards children. It takes me back when I played shitty 2D platformers and FPS games on my PC and got introduced to videogames through these simple and somewhat derivative titles. Frogun is well-done, and probably won't wow any hardcore gigachad retro-gamer, but it's charming enough, and simple yet engaging enough that I think it can be enjoyed by almost anyone else.

Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara
Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara
I don't even know, honestly. This game was super unfinished in the demo, and all you could really do is run around and attempt to run errands for these admittedly cute NPCs, but the quest system seemed to be non-existant and most characters would just tell you a funny "Hey, doncha know this game is not out yet? Go harass the developers instead!" joke. I dunno

Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed
Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed
If this is what sixth generation classics look like gameplay-wise than I'm not sorry for not playing more of them. Also what the fuck is this writing

Power Chord
Power Chord
I like the sentiment behind this, but right now it feels like this game is trying to ride high on it's setting, but the gameplay is just Slay the Spire with multiple characters, and the setting is not even that developed. I feel like this game could've been about anything else and it wouldn't change much. The music is cool, but it's weird that the soundtrack is completely separate from you or your enemies, who are all rockers. The premise is cool, but the game doesn't really try to capitalize on them, with a lot of elements feeling like regular fantasy bullshit painted with a faint rock-n-roll colour, which especially applies to the drummer who's just a paladin guy, and the enemies, who are often just regular orcs and goblins and shit. There are also small issues with UI and the game feels wildely unbalanced in the player's favour, but I'm sure a lot of this will be patched up by the time Power Chord comes out.
