Things I Dislike About Games I Love

A companion list to Things I Like About Games I Don't. No game is perfect in every way, and I think it's important to be able to acknowledge the flaws in the games that you love. I think it makes for healthier discussion, and I think that it makes folks overall better critics when they can recognize the areas where even their favorite games can be lacking.

The levels are very linear, especially compared to DMC 3 and 4. They usually consist of straightforward paths with a bunch of enemy encounters up until you fight the boss at the end of the level. Very rarely do you need to solve a puzzle, and figuring out where you need to go is never an issue.

Also, the game has the higher difficulties locked by default, and normal is way too easy if you're a DMC veteran.
The opening is very slow, especially with the tutorial, which felt very heavy handed.

I don't dislike it as much as most people do, but collecting the Tears of Light as Wolf Link is definitely a slow point of the game. The HD version makes it a bit better by decreasing the amount of bugs you have to collect thankfully, but it's still kinda boring.
Levels can be really long, to the point where it feels like they could've been split up.

The final boss sucks and is a low point to end the base game on.
Some sections definitely feel like padding in order to justify making the Midgar portion of the original game it's own standalone title. The Train Graveyard is the best example of this. While I don't have an issue with the Train Graveyard in terms of gameplay, the fact that this section is extended feels off in terms of the narrative, since you're supposed to be urgently meeting up with Barret.
It has been THREE YEARS into the game's lifecycle and the online lobbies STILL barely function. It genuinely baffles me that these lobbies are still in such a buggy and barely usable state. I love this game, but trying to find matches outside of ones with Discord friends really sucks.
I don't like the method of summoning the Great Clocks in Tartarus. Making them spawn randomly after you spend Twilight Fragments is pretty lame, and I wish there was a more consistent way to get them to spawn.
The life paths that you choose at the beginning of the game don't affect anything other than how the opening of the game plays out and minor dialogue options. I feel like there was a lot of potential for life paths to have unique gameplay affects, but as a whole, this idea felt really underutilized and probably would've been better off if it had just been scrapped. Hope the next game improves upon this regard.
There are certain chapters where enemies will get major increases in their levels, and you will be expected to grind for experience in optional dungeons. I don't really understand why they chose to do this. The optional dungeons aren't particularly interesting or engaging. Infinite Wealth does the same thing, and it sucks there too.
Honestly, the only thing about this game that I kinda don't like is that it reuses boss fights. Even then, it's not a big deal. The game is so tight and simplistic (in a good way) that it's hard to think of anything it does that's particularly lacking.

I definitely agree with you with the optional grindy dungeons in LAD 7 and 8, it gets very boring I was listening to music and youtube videos on the side while I was doing those lol. I love DMC5 a lot, but the levels for the most part are pretty boring and not too different, I wish they would of changed up the look of some making levels look more unique and have more variety, everything looked so bluish gray.

big huge agree on the train graveyard in ff7r, felt so weird and confusing as to why they handled it that way. also yeah strive lobbies suck dick, whenever i play now i dont even bother to interact with the lobby system and just go into quick match queue every time

Now I might have not beaten DMC3 nor 5 (I have played quite a bit of them though, trying to S rank every level...I just haven't beaten them due to lack of motivation) but I kind of disagree with the DMC5 take but I can understand why you don't like the more linear levels, for me DMC is all about the combat and entertaining storylines/characters. I couldn't care less about exploration in these games personally (Hell, I actually didn't like exploring the tower at all in DMC3).

I agree about dmc5. There is no interesting level gimmicks most of the time. Levels feels like a background noise mostly. I guess they did that bc people complained dmc 4's gimmicky sections a lot

I 100% agree on FF7, CP2077 and especially on Yakuza:LAD, im on chapter 11 and I'm really thinking about dropping it cause of this. It's good to know that someone somewhere have the same feelings about this certain parts of this three games 🫡
I didn't have to grind in Infinite Wealth but I'll absolutely agree on LAD, I feel like they made that chapter boss fight specifically with a grind in mind.

Huh, y'know, I didn't realize this was a bit of a divisive topic amongst folks who play the game. I can respect it. For me personally, I just like having more variety in levels as opposed to just combat combat combat. But DMC5's combat is so varied that I think it makes up for it.

@godyslaw I'm totally biased, but I say stick with it. It might pick up for you, but I totally understand if it makes you wanna drop it. Is what it is
