tldr: an amazing story with wonderful characters also has excellent gameplay, really well done voice acting and a slew of fun meaningful extra content. its only issues is the way difficulty is handled and that the beginning is kind of hard to get through on replay.

the main story is a rollercoaster joyride
although the actual narrative takes a bit to get really interesting, the characters are amazing from the start. i love dark pit, palutena, viridi, pit and hades so so much and their interacts bring me nothing but joy. and once the narrative gets going, you get both a compelling story and wonderful characters--something rarely seen outside a typical turn based rpg

and the gameplay itself is really good too! the shooting half is like a really cinematic starfox, with specific music tracks tailor made for specific parts of the level that takes full advantage of the fact that you are on rails. the ground segments are brilliant too, but not all of them are amazingly designed all of the time unfortunately

this is one of the most complete videogames ever, because of the sheer amount of meaningful content- on top of the brilliant story mode, there's sakurai's signature challenge boards (three of them!), smash trophies, weapon collection, AND an amazing online multiplayer mode as well.
but when it comes to flaws, ive got a few words-
-replayability is really bolstered by the sheer variety of weapons and weapon types- but also hurt by the fact that hearing the same voice lines over and over again can get really frustrating
-the way difficulty is handled really irks me. i hate that death makes the game easier. i really just want to play entire level at one fixed difficulty, but the game wont let me
-the beginning ten chapters are the worst parts of the game and are a bit of a drag on replay
-bosses are also hurt by the difficulty problem
-controls dont bother me but they really bother others- especially people who are left handed
but besides these things this might be my favourite videogame but also not really but also maybe?
idk but i love it a whole lot

So let me get this straight, I just wasted 100 million dollars and sank an entire studio, all with my freaking mind!?!?

Lots of charm as expected but controls are weird in a way I can't necessarily describe, though it very well may be muscle memory from the other games. Some of the bosses are a teeny bit difficult do to this.
Extra Mode feels like a whole new fucked up and evil game but will probably save that for later

Legends: Arceus is incredibly fortunate that it's a Pokémon game, as there's a lot here that would be nearly unforgivable in any other context.

The story has some nice moments, and a handful of enjoyable characters, but is achingly plodding, tedious in its repetitions, and ultimately overstays its welcome. The core gameplay loop often feels like it amounts to little more than making numbers go up and ticking boxes. The boss fights were actually pretty enjoyable to me just because they broke up the core gameplay loop, but they do amount to an E-Grade Souls rip-off with some pretty bad game-feel. In general I think game-feel is something Legends: Arceus really struggles with, especially when this aspect collides headlong into some of the ways where the game feels unfinished (attempting to traverse hills and edges of terrain makes this really obvious).

The game also feels like it is suffering a bit of an identity crisis at times; a common occurrence for the first half of the runtime is that you'll end up in a battle with some story character, you'll have six monsters to their one or two meaning you can never really lose no matter what happens, and then as soon as you win your party is healed for you. It's like they didn't want the trainer battles to define the game, but were too scared to move away from them to a more dramatic extent in case the lack of them might disappoint long-time fans.

Easily the most damning problem though, and the one I really can't shake, is the world design. These environments are just so lifeless, so lacking in intrigue. Big, bland, bumpy, and ultimately distractingly ugly, expanses that exist solely to plonk down critters upon. If you removed the Pokémon themselves from the equation it's hard to imagine people actually wanting to exist in these spaces, or having any real desire to explore them.

Legends Arceus has a lot wrong with it, and yet despite this it is still a Pokémon game and this does some serious heavy lifting in its favour. Despite all my many complaints, sometimes you just see the most perfect, adorable little critter wandering around in the wild, you crouch down in the grass to try and sneak up on it, and in that moment it's hard to harbour any ill-will against what's going on here. Pokémon has always been a franchise that carries with it an incredible amount of charm and the best moments in Legends Arceus are the ones where that charm shines through, and for all the game's faults I was left smiling more than this review might suggest just because it's hard to feel too bad when you get to spend your time vibing around all these lovely monster-friends.

i have daily traumatic flashbacks to high school where i was walking down the halls wearing an Undertale shirt and this one random guy was like "wh-what??? a gamer girl!" and then blocked my path and did the entire Sans speech. the whole thing. in public.

”What did he do, honey? Lecture you on his theorem of inequality in children’s fighter games?”

One of the best games for the 3ds tho I'm pretty sure playing this was the root of my wrist problems

people talk about this game like it's some groundbreaking, breathtaking, wonderful pinnacle of video games and i really wish i understood that. this game feels really nice to move around in, its visuals are really appealing and its score is pretty cute. but there's not much of a real narrative (or writing at all), no memorable characters, no cool side-quests, no dungeons, a pitiful lack of enemy variety + almost no bosses, and nothing that made exploring feel worthwhile. most of it feels like filler check-list fluff (towers, shrines, koroks). the world is well-designed but there's not much substance inside of it beyond its sandbox elements. i genuinely feel like, insane for not liking this the way people talk about it but i just do not see it personally. it's just okay!

Knights of the Old Republic will probably always be the best Star Wars narrative and one of the best narratives of all time. The world building, the societies, the fractions, the quests, the characters, the plot, the twists, the soundtrack and the atmosphere. Impeccable.
