iDibaje finished Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

This review contains spoilers

Man, Shadow of the Erdtree might almost have been my favourite thing I've played by Fromsoftware so far. I have mostly positive things to say, but also a few negatives.

Engagement with the world is better than it's ever been. Fromsoft took everything that didn't work with the base game Elden Ring, and flipped it on its head in the best way possible. I don't think I've ever experienced a game, where you walk down an unassuming path, only to find yourself in a new area that you didn't even know existed. The way the map loops around on itself from multiple angles is one of the most insanely satisfying things I've ever experienced.

The new weapons are a blast, and I can't wait to test more of them out. I especially love the new KUNG FU style. Great stuff.

Art direction is literally out of this world. Perhaps the most beautiful a game has ever looked.

The boss fights are also extremely well done... For the most part. I think Messmer stood out as the boss I had most fun learning and beating. Insanely fun fight.

Now, I've beaten every boss in the game without using spirit ashes or summons (except Bayle for the quest, CURSE YOU BAYLE) and then comes the end boss. I get it, they want to end the Elden Ring story on a huge bang, and storywise it works. What doesn't work for me is how this boss seems to break most players because they're playing with a weapon/build, making everything harder than it has to be. I get it though, you have almost endless options for building your character, not everything will be viable at this level. I guess balancing everything would be an impossible task.
Still, I felt like I cheesed the boss in the end, but also that's the game I guess, and the victory left me kinda ehhhh, mostly because I resorted to summoning my trusty mimic for once. Not to mention that ending cutscene that gave us nothing at all. I am sure, however, that during my next run, the end boss won't be as much of a problem after I wrap my head around everything, and play around with even more fun builds and ideas.

Obviously, the journey is what matters in the end, and though I can seem overly negative, I really really really really loved my time with the expansion, and I'm already planning my next run through the Lands of Shadow.

TLDR: Masterpiece, Endboss sucks, skill issue on my part.

Chordata3 finished Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
I picked this game up awhile back and set it down pretty quickly. Not because I didn’t like it, but another game I was more excited about came around. For some reason though, I didn’t pick it back up until last week.

Funny enough, the reason I started playing it again is because my wife and I went to Disney, and walking around Galaxy’s Edge had me itching for some more Star Wars action!

So, I love Star Wars. I am in my twenties, so although I grew up watching all of the movies, I really was hooked on the prequels. Hell, seeing Revenge of the Sith in theaters was a highlight of my childhood. But even now I watch just about everything they put out(for better or for worse) and I can’t get enough. Also, I love Metroidvanias. And this game combines those two things I love almost seamlessly. Almost.

Let’s start with the good. The atmosphere, story, and characters are all great. I really started to connect with some of the main characters, most of all Cal and BD. They are both wonderful and charming protagonists, some of the best Star Wars has seen in a long time. Here’s to hoping they make a good show or movie about them!

The gameplay is good, lots of varying environments and obstacles to tackle, and a bunch of different enemies. The more you explore the stinger you get, and fighting enemies allows you to build out your skill tree and add new moves to your arsenal.

There are awesome moments throughout this story that made me either geek out or have my jaw drop, and I was so eager to keep going and see more!

Now, there are a few things that take this game down a notch, almost to a 3.5.

First off, the map design in this game is horrendous. It’s definitely trying to take after the Prime trilogy’s maps, but it’s such an eyesore. On top of that, toggling through the maps levels is cumbersome and frustrating. There are also horrible oversights when it comes to backtracking and making the map more interconnected, as you can spend a ton of time just trying to figure out how to get back to one small area you forgot to get a chest in. I really hope they fix this issue in the sequel.

I also didn’t love the lightsaber combat, most of the time. It just feels like constant button mashing instead of having a bunch of different combos available. You do have combos, but unfortunately to me very few of them felt satisfying to pull off. I hope this gets expanded in the sequel as well! I will say, the lightsaber duels you have throughout the game are kick ass.

All in all I really enjoyed this game and I’d recommend it to pretty much everyone who plays games. Bonus if they love Star Wars and Metroidvanias like I do!
