BREEAAAAAKKDDOOOOOOWWNNNNN

play it again
the best part of resident evil 7 is breakdown-lite
i haven't played it yet but since there isn't a breakdown 2 that's probably going to change soon
stealth and gun driven but there's still some melee focused action
more melee weapons than fists but close enough i guess
more arcade-y than weighty but a cool first person action romp nonetheless
there's a first person mode in a prototype build
first person punch out
kinda feels like shit but we're starved for these games
it's got boxing

no it just sucks, cool idea, subpar execution with bad voice acting to pair

1 year ago

bro have you even played it

it's not the most incredible game out there but it has interesting ideas and its gameplay is pretty unique - especially what with being able to brainjack enemies and all

the english voice acting is unbearable but that's why the pal version is subtitled

Yeah I’ve been playing Maken X off and on and it’s great, obviously thanks to Kazuma Kaneko the art direction is nothing short of mesmerizing, especially in city levels and brain-jacking is unique and adds great variety to the gameplay. The notion that DMC defines action rather than being anything more than a niche action subgenre is fucking annoying, I don’t mean to imply it’s why Huss hates it but this unusual aversion to regular action games is usually because of DMC fans, like that “THIS CAME OUT 2 YEARS AFTER DMC” Drakengard vid.

what i love about the 5th and 6th gens specifically is that "genre molds" didn't really exist for 3d games yet. it resulted in a lot of creative solutions for different gameplay concepts

unfortunately the popular consensus is that "simple = better", but personally i think the virtual-on-esque controls of maken x work in its favor as an arcade-y action game. especially compared to maken shao - its ps2, third person remake which ironically enough just feels like a shitty imitation of dmc with no identity to call its own

you should check out breakdown if you get the chance sometime. it's kind of the be all end all of what i'm talking about here - a very unique concept that filtered the fuck out of consumers because it was too unwieldy for them

@chandler
i think the game overall is very unique and its ideas are really great, being able to travel around the world was also pretty good, my main issue was with the barebones combat, it's fun maybe even really fun at first but then it's more or less the same throughout it all, good map didnt save it for me sadly, though i will be fair i did drop the game and didnt finish it, i probably should later on

@Limp_Mantis
easily my favorite thing about the game is its visuals and art, it's always great seeing Kaneko's art in 3D
you're definitely right about people inserting DMC into anything action related but yeah personally im not the biggest fan of it but it's pretty fun, my issues with Maken was just with the combat itself, though i like to give games a 2nd chance so ill definitely play it again some time

DMC invented action games, actually it might've invented video games if you think about it.

am i reading this right? did huss delete something? DMC wasnt even mentioned until limp mantis brought it up in their complaint

1 year ago

i thought the dmc mention was strange initially but i think he's just referring to it being the "default" for control layouts with most action games now. yknow, light attacks, heavy attacks, jumping, maybe a special button - that whole thing

since this is a list about breakdown, how hard is it to emulate it on PC? generally i know a lot about emulation but OG xbox i know nothing about

1 year ago

uh it's been a couple months since i last tried but the breakdown emulation was pretty fucky. i'd check right now but my pc is on the fritz. it runs perfectly on xbox/360/series tho

1 year ago

unfortunately no xbox of the sorts, i guess ill just try it out and see how it emulates with my legally owned copy

last i checked it was "playable" but there were issues with seeing through walls and flashing lights when firing weapons. could be better now though. xemu's development moves incredibly fast

1 year ago

yeah i looked more into xemu and they have a compatibility list thing, seems to be working fine except for a weird color tint on the FMVs, shouldn't be an issue for the most part though
