To get the most enjoyment out of this game character-writing wise, I think it's best to take a leaf out of AI 1's book and treat NI as an alternate universe. I'm not suuuper happy with how characterization from AI 1 wasn't retained but this is what makes it work for me
I really liked the new improvements upon somniums, the VR investigations were a welcome addition, and the performances from the cast both writing-wise and voice acting-wise were excellent. Overall, the presentation is stellar. My main gripes are with the story, which unfortunately fell pretty flat.
What made AI 1 work so well for me is how deeply personal the story was. The theme of love encompassed every element of the game, even down to the title having a double meaning (Ai = Love in Japanese + Artificial Intelligence), and every character had a deep personal tie to the overarching plot. Meanwhile in NI, Ryuki and Mizuki spend a decent chunk of it as outside observers rather than being personally tied to the events of the story. This is not helped by NI’s lack of a true thesis or mission statement, rather it feels written with the goal of creating “something cool” first and providing commentary on society second, all the way down to the most significant plot twists. AI and NI being written with very different end goals in mind, combined with the frequent callbacks to AI 1 and Zero Escape teasing the player with direct comparison to Uchikoshi’s other works didn't really do any favors for me towards this feeling of disconnect.
This isn’t to say anything bad about writing something to be cool though! I think this game was written as charming as always, I particularly loved Tama and Ryuki. This game can be very thought provoking as well. However, even treating this game as an alternate universe to the first I feel the overall messaging and creation of this game is substantially weaker

excellent, excellent game. the game is by no means perfect (the enforcers are by far the weakest link, dungeon crawling) but they are far outweighed by the more emotional moments in the story. you have to earn these special moments but especially with the context given in FC I think the journey is very much worth it. very happy I started my trails journey and am looking forward to more
something I love about games from the 90s-early 2000s is getting to watch many different people learn how to use and grow with a brand new medium of entertainment. Berwick Saga is a game I truly felt was 15 or so years in the making. Is it a flawed experience? absolutely, but it is still an experience truly worth your time and worth the years that has led to its creation

much like Apollo the game is fine! just fine.
it has a really strong first case and I love the new sprite art and 3d models - especially with the new perceive ability highlighting little details within the sprites. you can really see the new love given to ace attorney here
however directly afterwords the cases become rather weak and the stolen panties subplot was uncomfortable for me to play through. it does finish on a high note and Phoenix's character arc is very satisfying but the middle of the game is difficult to ignore. trials and tribulations was always going to be a tough act to follow so I feel a soft reboot was for the best, even if nothing remarkable happens

Forgive the discourtesy of rating this game a 9/10, but it is so good that I think it'll be a struggle to go backwards and play the other ace attorney games I've missed.
Really, the only flaw is the introduction of summation examinations- they break the flow of court proceedings and slow the game's pace in a way that isn't utilized to its strengths. Aside from that I really can't risk discussing anything else without spoiling. The game is afoot!
