1996

incredible game with some wack difficulty tuning that is more than made up for by the weird mish-mash aesthetics, great gunplay, and some really fun and unique enemies. i haven't played doom yet which apparently outstrips quake in a few of these categories but i dont think that'd knock my rating down lower. glad i played it with NIN soundtrack so every five seconds i could get so scared

(copying my steam review to here)

one of the only games where i have felt the joy of mjolnir recon unit 54's slippy slidey movement (with a very thrilling double jump and sprint) combined with some odd, granular mechanics like managing an overall hunger meter that controls the cap of your hp and stamina. this terrifying cyborg martyr girl needs her snacks.

the weapons are awesome, the shotgun shreds as it would have to, double flechettes are a blast (alongside the gratification of actually getting to use them where Marathon: Infinity gives you about 3 ammo drops for it and then leaves you dry for the rest of the runtime) and they seem to be kind of controversial here but i LOVE the reload mechanics. many tense situations sprung up where i had forgotten to replace a clip or jam some bullets back into my magnum and it was scramble or die, which i found exciting (and rewarding to master)

biggest issue imo is that it crashes a lot and theres only one set of environmental textures so i really hope you like Being In The Citadel. the translation is also rough, but given the one person team i'm not inclined to harp on it. personally i think the level design more than makes up for the sameyness because every new area still felt rewarding to explore - hi tycho! it also really reminds me of marathon's commitment to taking place largely in one place except marathon is very hit or miss with it and the citadel knocks it out of the park

anyway this is super long i played it bc i <3 marathon and it gave me all that and much more thumbsup

This review contains spoilers

having played it again i think it holds up exceptionally but i am docking it a star for some thoughtless use of "frontier" imagery that veers into anti-native stereotyping which is frustrating to see

this time around i really got to thinking of it as like - talking about niche game subcultures that are ride or die on a couple of weird people who are obsessed with it? like they write the guides and they decide the meta and they keep the exhaustive collections and those communities can be beautiful and also often completely devour themselves

and obviously inscryption is also a love letter to creepypasta and urban legend and it places luke carder as both the shmuck who ends up with the Cursed Amulet but also as the unwitting catalogers of a dead game that still wants to live but some communities blow up for a reason. well anyway im sure theres more to be said about it but this was the line of thinking that snagged me this time

and as always: #BoneHeapSweep

PORT IT NOW #SETHMINGNATION half star docked for some bullshit boss design and jansen

adds more kinds of small foods to roll up so i wish i could give it six stars instead

go roll shit up for 20 minutes . i hate you (the best song youve ever heard composed for a video game starts playing)

dude i played this for the shmovement i didnt know it was a horse girl movie as well as a battlefield romance

hardest time ive had in a video game in a long time would play again will definitely also go back and challenge the original

girl what could i possibly say its like the first one but better

a seriously good effort on 343s part. if i want to genuinely criticize it have to become a halo lore guy and thats more than im willing to commit to on this website. master chief get grappling hook

not as satisfying in some storytelling aspects as the main trilogy but a hell of a lot tighter than odst and possibly bungie's best effort in the entire franchise for moment to moment gameplay. i love you doctor catherine halsey

a five star game that immediately becomes a 3.5 star game when it forgets how to end and also i had to see way too much nathan fillion

ARBITERRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! boss fights were not a good idea but i cant be too mad bc i got to punch regret in his stupid pope chair. the delta halo just kind of feels like an artifact of them trying to figure out what master chief is doing while arbiter is being a lot more interesting . Guilty spark starts a cult (+half star)
