I'm gonna say it: this is better than 16-bit. The level design, aesthetics, climax, and handling of the chaos emeralds make this a much more enjoyable package overall.

Even comparing it to other 8-bit platformers, the controls are tight, the challenges are always fair, and even stages within the same world have variety.

I am of course referring to the SMS version. Sonic's missing nose in the GG version always bothered me.

A fun game is fun even without an objective. I mean, there is an objective, but exploring the mansion's bizarre rooms is a reward in itself. This is aided by simple, intuitive gameplay and short platforming challenges unique to each room.

I really do believe JSW is a timeless game with broad appeal. If this had been available to more people, perhaps it could've inspired imitators just like Super Mario Bros. did.

Symphony of the Night was groundbreaking in its marriage of classic Castlevania, Metroid and RPG elements - but Castlevania was getting repetitive, it needed inspiration.

From the moment you see a torii shrine and "2035" in the opening crawl, it promises exactly that... and delivers it in abundance. The setting informs many exciting gameplay, art and story decisions.

The result is something unique and entirely its own. It's a monster in the GBA library and most definitely belongs in this world.

Letting fans take control of your work usually doesn't end well. In this case, I wish it happened more often.

Oh boy. Yes, the story is amazing. Yeah, the characters are unforgettable. The soundtrack is pretty spiffy too...

... but it doesn't excuse the piss poor visuals and sound. Nor the lack of variety in its characters, who all amount to their limit breaks and materia. It also drops off in quality significantly after the first disc.

It's still worth playing but the pedestal people hold this on is ridiculous. Do yourself a favour: enjoy it for what it is and avoid the fandom.

It's not a story about saving the world, but rather avenging it. We see the effects of it on 14 characters of varied ages, genders, races, beliefs, and even species, who join up to overcome something larger than themselves.

To me, this is still Square's magnum opus. It turned so many fantasy and JRPG tropes on their head while improving on everything the series already did. It deserves far more praise than it gets.

I hate that this is actually good.

This game kicks my ass and I love it.

It's good but the additions in the console version make it way better, even though some features are missing. Besides, that opening song...

I wanted to love this more than I did.

I got this for Christmas once. Imagine hoping for Mario and getting this.

This game is ruined by the precision the hammer requires.

imo the definitive version of this game

Do yourself a favour and just play the SMS version instead.
