2001 - Close competition to Super Smash Bros. Melee, RuneScape, and Halo 1, but none of those felt right for the spot.
2004 - Only real competition is San Andreas
2005 - WarioWare: Touched! wins if we use its North American release date
2006 - This being a brutal year for games, it's a close competition with my other childhood favorites, New Super Mario Bros. and LEGO Star Wars II. This one has the staying power.
2007 - Insane year
2008
2011 - Greatest year in gaming history; Dark Souls and Minecraft are serious contenders
2012 - Borderlands 2 in distant second
2015
2016 - Extremely, ridiculously close with DOOM
2017 - Also considered Prey
2018 - Extremely sparse year for me, and this game deserves the spot

2022 - Honorable mention to Blacktail
2023 - Dead Space and Hi-Fi Rush are contenders for a distant second place.
