Lessons learned from Frog Detective:

- Crime? Not real.
- Books? Trash.
- Moles? Not to be trusted.
- Extortion? Fun.
- Your address? Give it to everybody.
- Frog Detective? #1 in my heart.

Highly recommended, this is an absolutely adorable little adventure trilogy. The dialogue might be my favorite of any game since Golf Story. (Am I Australia-pilled now? Has listening to The Weekly Planet for a decade conditioned my brain to think Aussie text is always funny? Who can say)

Pep's Detective Deep Dive - Game 3
Did you expect me to give this a bad review? What, do you think I'm some kind of monster?

This is just what a sleepy Sunday afternoon needed. A zero-stakes, simple adventure game that didn't tax my braincells and frequently made me laugh. Each episode is more expansive than the last (and by "expansive" I mean that the second episode lets you put stickers on a notebook, and the third episode gives you a sick-ass scooter) and the twist in the third episode got me genuinely emotionally invested.

The only thing that kinda irked me was the occasional moment where the creator would literally insert herself into the game, interrupting the story to deliver some kind of "well, actually" message about how something a character said was wrong. I don't know if these moments were supposed to be jokes but they felt really weird to me, like the video game equivalent of a Twitter community note.

It's cute, it's fun, and it's on Game Pass. If you're looking for a short little adventure game where you don't have to think very hard then Frog Detective is perfect for you.

P.S. I'll play some actual detective games soon, I swear!

nearly cried when he got a hat that fit

I would have loved Frog Detective as a kid. As an adult, these are quick and simple games oozing with charm. Each case is bigger and better than the last. The magnifying glass is absolutely not useless. It's for close inspection of critter faces. Only real detectives know. I've already googled 'Frog Detective merch'. I'm in deep lads.

Cute little frog guy, on silly inconsequential little mysteries. Harmless, playful and quaint. Wouldn't say it sticks every joke it makes but, when little frog guy gets a solving, I ain't gettin' in his way. 🐸

A truly charming series of games filled with passion! Love how these games build up a nice little world with delightful characters and they have a very particular kind of humour that tickles my funnybone.

You are the Frog Detective, the second best investigator around, and it's up to you to solve not one, not two, but three cases! The first two are very straight forward, but I was not expecting that plot twist in the third!

This game is just utterly goofy. The characters have the weirdest things to say, and it doesn't always pertain to the case. Nothing is to be taken seriously at all. And that Degrassi reference! It gives me life!

Visuals

Frog Detective is not a pretty game. It's actually an ugly game, but in a cute, charming kind of way. It's a 3D low-poly world with flood-filled objects and no texture. All of the NPCs are animals, and while you can tell what they are, they definitely look off. I'm not holding that against the game though, because it does suit the goofy tone of the stories.

This is played in first person for the most part, with conversations in third person.

Sound Effects + Music

Frog Detective has jazzy background music which was really fun and upbeat. It makes you feel like you're in a cheesy cartoon about old school detectives. But the music does change between the three cases to fit the specific theme. The cowboy one made me laugh when it started.

There's no voice acting or really any unique sound effects. The credits do have a catchy song.

Gameplay + Controls

Frog Detective is more of a point-and-click and visual novel hybrid. You won't actually be solving any cases. Detective just goes around, talking to the NPCs involved, and going on fetch quests. You'll mainly be trading items between characters to collect what you need to proceed with your investigation. Not much to it. The second case introduces a notebook, which gave me hope that the case would be more interactive. But no. It's just a cute way to keep track of your items and NPC quests.

This was the first first-person game I've actually managed to play, since the movement is smooth. It's not realistic at all unless Detective is gracefully sliding across the ground, but I'm glad for it.

Replayability

Frog Detective is super short, but there's also not much content there. The cases remain the same, so I don't see a point in playing it again unless you really want to relive the stories. I did miss some achievements, so I might go back to get them, since it should be easy enough.

Overall

Frog Detective was a fun way to spend a couple of hours. The gameplay and graphics are nothing to get excited over, but the characters and dialogue made me smile. By the end, I was way more invested than I thought I would be.

I wish crime was real so we could execute Lobster Cop and Mason Mole

I can't really stay mad at it. It's a very low 7/10, but it's a charming 7/10. It's not as funny as it thinks it is, but it has a lot of heart.

So good, so funny! great twists, cute af, fuck bonnie,

I'd have more fun watching someone play this and doing voices than I did playing it myself. It's in no way a bad game but just silently clicking through text occasionally chuckling to myself doesn't quite ring right. But what drags it down as a game is how much of it's time is wasted in menus and the comical drama of parts (episode 3's poetry especially.) From the second episode on it becomes progressively more investigative in presentation and gameplay but I wish I could skip writing down everything about each individual character and then read it myself there's a lot of time spent on this one aspect for episodes 2&3 which could be significantly cut down for me personally, I'm already reading dialogue at my own pace so let me do the same for the notebook. I also found the audio for some tracks (which were all great tracks) to be extremely loud for whatever reason. It's funny charming and has a lot of silliness to it, it's also short so even though I wish I could go at it at my pace a 3 hour run time is still overall good for what it is.

7/10

They're short and cute. Some of the humor didn't really land for me but other parts got a few chuckles out of me. Not much else to say.

A delightfully good time- Frog Detective is your most basic of adventure games in terms of mechanics but the cute, wholesome, and humorous writing carry it a long way.

The gameplay in Frog Detective amounts to running around a small environment, talking to colorful characters, and bringing items you find around the environment to said characters to progress. Oftentimes, a character will want to trade something of theirs for something you can give them so it quickly becomes just running from one dude to the next once you've got a handle on things.

Frog Detective's brevity in the first two chapters make it very fun since it almost feels like watching episodes of a delightful children's show. The stakes are very low and the dance party endings put a massive smile on my face.

I was surprised when Frog Detective 3 took things to the next level comparatively with a somewhat twisting story that flips your expectations on their head a bit. The tone is still very much in line with the other games but there's a little more to the third act this time around in the best possible way. The environment is also quite a bit bigger in the third chapter and you get a scooter that's super fun to use and quick to get around with.

Frog Detective's third chapter has a definitive ending and I was surprised by how endearing it felt with how short the overall experience was. While these games are completely unchallenging and resort to very simple fetch quests at several junctures, they have a distinct and very cute voice to them. Don't miss out on the Frog Detective.

The best game about a second best detective (doesn't know other games like that).

I played this one before it left Game Pass. I thought it was enjoyable enough and the humor was fun at times, but it is entirely too wordy for me. I feel the game could've done with someone editing the dialog down a bit.

Due to the smaller scope of the game, that's really all it has going for it though. The fact that there are a lot of strange, talking animals is kind of what the design of the game is centered around.

almost wrote this off because it looked a bit wholesome games baitish and i'm not into that generally but i'm glad i gave this a go. it was very charming and sweet without being in an annoying way.

enjoyed the progression of the three cases as they not only increased in complexity (not a ton, obviously) with the mysteries involved but also added little touches to the gameplay itself too. the scooter in case 3 also getting a little THPS styled mini-game was a treat.

would absolutely play another one of these or something like it.

Delightfully silly little trilogy of games full of some real good laughs if it's your kind of humor. Plus some insightful lessons to be learned about the realities of crime.

Jogado no Xbox Game Pass.

Jogue Frog Detective 3.

What game? It was just words. Words that were consistently 6/10 funny.

We love a good, cute, and easy to complete in a day sort of indies. These will always come in handy in a pinch. Lovely time.

Huge shout outs to Dan Golding for a geniunely wonderful noir/western soundtrack.

Given how short, simple, and silly this series is; there has been way more effort put into the Frog Detective games then honestly needed to be put into them. But that just makes these game even better. Just simply fun and goofiness all around, definitely worth a fun little play through.

giggled a lot. simply adore this little gay frog and his weird friends, had a good time!

i'm lodging a formal complaint against the government of victoria for misappropriation of funds

Frog Detective says “Yeah pretty good I reckon” in the first few lines of dialogue so it’s nice to finally be represented in games

I'm glad there was a disclaimer about books - otherwise, I would have just listened to Frog Detective and burned all of my books. It's a confusing world out there!
