I play this to farm Nintendo silver coins when I need the limited-time avatars. Beside that it's a masked New Super Mario Bros. limited behind a pay-wall with some challenging mode that will make you play against some ghosts.
The main game is very short and not really worth all that money at all. Half of it and you may consider it only if you're hardcore Mario fans.
Strangely enough I don't think it can be considered a gacha. But surely a live service phone game, so we are not much far away.

got all pink coins. idk i've paid more for a lot worse. you can currently get this for $5 and then never have to pay anything in this app again, and they gave you so many rally tickets that it's comically generous for a phone app. that said, this game is either way too easy or way too eager to frustrate. it's solid enough for what it is but it's def throwaway.
Pretty cool until you realise you have to pay for any World beyond the first one, which I'm not willing to do. Honestly the movement is good considering it's a mobile game and looks like you're just playing New Super Mario Bros with auto-run on, just needed to make all the levels free and could've been better. And it's weird how this is considered a mainline Mario game.
I did not expect Super Mario Run to have an average score of, at the time of this writing, 1.9.
Which I suppose begs the question of - what was everybody else expecting?
Super Mario Run is, as the title suggests, a running game - where the character charges forward and it is the player's responsibility to use limited controls (often, in the genre, a single button) to avoid obstacles.
Mario runs forward, and the player taps or swipes the screen to have Mario execute one of a few possible moves to avoid getting hurt, stomp on enemies, grab coins, or flip backwards while sliding down the sides of walls. There is a good amount of challenge in collecting coins, and in finding the proper paths to find the addition collectible large coins and red coins.
This is Mario in the most casual setting I think he's ever been in. Not a great running game by any means, but the worlds are cute and it definitely feels like a Mario Game of its time (in line with the "New" Super Mario series).

This game basically works in a way where the first world is a demo and you have to pay to get the rest of the game. It's sorta overpriced but it goes on sale a decent amount. Really fun game too, it's fun to perfect each level in Toad Rally and get all the collectables in the main game. Really no clue where the hate comes from for this being a "microtransactionfest" when it's pay once to get the actual game and that's it. I'm pretty sure all that misdirected hate is the reason Nintendo keeps making gacha crap now, so lol.
I paid $10 for some Mario Maker quality levels but I can't be in charge of Mario's movement. I think if it was a breakneck speed platformer where you're forced to play quickly or the level design worked around the concept it would have been pretty cool. But while none of these levels are BAD per se, they are only interesting to run through once and basically never touch again.
There are certainly worse ways to spend $10 but frankly Super Mario Run is hardly worth $0.99 or less.
