Imagine coming from your third bankruptcy, having the budget of a happy meal and instead of playing it safe you make an entry with 50+ characters, half of them being newcomers, making the game the introduction to a new arc in the story, mixing mechanics from previous KOF games and creating a nearly perfect lobby system

this game has BALLS

The game is very, very ugly, and very low-budget. However, it has great character designs, music, and gameplay. Unfortunately, though, pretty much every good thing it does is surpassed by its successor. So, unless you really like certain new or returning characters not in XV, there is very little reason to return to this game.

Years ago, when I went to get my physical version of this game the store just gave me a steelbook copy instead of a standard one.
Idk if it's because of that anecdote or maybe it's because I'm latino and it's in my blood to like every KOF, but I have a soft spot for this game.

This kof is not in the conversation of the best ones in the franchise, but I think it's... pretty good.
Yes, I know the graphics are um... not the best.
Yes, I know the character designs are... also not the best (look at Terry...)
Yes, it doesn't have the style of 13 or 2002um (or the early KOFs)
Yes, gameplaywise it's not 98um, 2002um or 13.
And yes, KOF 15 existing makes most people question why would you want to go back to 14.

14 takes from 98um, 2002um and 13, while adding some small changes to the kof formula (like the wall splat). At a glance it's like a simplified and less execution demanding kof 13.

15 is definitely the more refined version (like ultimate to sm4sh) and also way better looking, but for some reason I feel there's some charm to what could be considered a "transition game". Testing the waters of what a 3d (or 2.5d) KOF could be, trying out new character design ideas and even checking if it's worth continuing to make new KOF fighting games.

The roster of new characters is fkn weird. It includes shitty new protagonist Shunei, that for some reason is in the next game, and his friend sleepy boy who is the worst character in the franchise (worse than Bao and the Kyo clones). There's also team south america (more like team Brazil lmao) which includes a Brazilian ninja, a boxer with a cyber arm and a girl with a toucan. None of them came back in the next game. Then there's 3 pachinko characters and wtf is Xanadu????
There were some great new additions though, like King of Dinasours, Mian, Najd, Antonov... and adding someone from samsho is such a good idea. It feels like the philosophy when considering new challengers was that of quantity over quality, so it's understandable that some of them were duds. I mean it introduces 22 fighters to kof and of those 16 were all-new designs debuting in this game.
It's unlikely that most of the duds return in future kofs and I'm pretty sure that Love heart and Mui Mui can't come back ever. I think that alone can be a reason to come back to this game, just like Hwa Jai in 13 or the sports team in 98.

Apart from the weird designs and characters, and the bad graphics, there's not much wrong with this game. The gameplay is good (the less demanding execution is good for a KOF casual like me) and it maintains 60fps. The presentation is pretty bland but the ost is great as always. The online is trash, and it died extremely quickly but you can probably coordinate with other players online, just like I have been doing when I get the itch to go back.
If you liked 15 you'll probably like 14. I can understand the bad reactions at the time, since this had to follow 13, a gorgeous game, but give it a chance if you can.

doesnt look very nice but is very fun. superb music.

6.5/10

well, hm, yeah. KoF 13 looked gorgeous with its immaculately crafted pixel art but making pixel art that good for your games sure as hell ain't financially viable especially if you are SNK. So this game goes on to finally move the series to using 3D models and uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

at least the roster size is big? There are a LOT of newcomers with designs that look uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The gameplay is fine though! It feels just as solid as any other KoF game, I don't think I'll ever be good enough at fighting games to really fully immerse myself into the mechanics, but it seems like this game is quite deep! The supers for each character are cool even though they look uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The music is solid! Character themes are good, got that KoF vibe to em playing in each stage! good to distract from the characters that look uhhhhhhhhhhhhh

imma keep it real with you no amount of graphical overhaul updates are gonna save those character models and designs...

This game needed some help, it got the help to revive SNK era but my GOD. Revisiting this game now that XV is out makes XIV unfortunate.

its honestly solid if you get past some of the graphical issues

I'm a fighting game junkie so like gameplay wise KoFXIV is still very solid, very fun
Everything else is... yknow, bleh. The roster isnt bad and the new characters are actually really damn cool but unfortunately it looks like ass so yea

Mixed feelings on this one, I love KOF, but this one is kinda weird, the musics and stages are bland and uninspired, and the new combo system feels kinda weird for me. But still, I still had fun playing It with my friends.
Also, this game is so fucking overpriced, don't buy It if it's not on sale

I honestly think that the world wasn't ready for this game. And SNK failed to realize this. Lot of new, quickly forgotten characters being added. Visual aesthetic now turned into 3D, new antagonist that lacked any intrigue or personality. It was a tough sell for the old KOF fans. But regardless of those issues and the horrid visual aesthetic of the game, it was fun. It's a good fighting game experience despite all of this. I'm still waiting for Nelson to be added to King of Fighters XV!

One of the greatest PS2 fighters of all time.

Fun? Yes
Wonky? Somewhat but I can overlook that.
But man looking back at this and then seeing XV, I'm glad everyone will look better in the next game.

Verse is kinda cool I guess, I do like some of his move-set and his Akira theme music but the fact he's just a literal asteroid monster from nowhere is what keeps me from truly liking him.

Hopefully the next guy in XV has a bit more personality.

Sure it’s ugly, but mechanically it’s pretty fun.

I have no idea as to how a fighting game could be this fundamentaly horrendous and still be released.
The "Story" mode is just an arcade mode with the occasional custscene. The tutorial is the worst I've every come across, with paragraphs of jargon coming at you faster than you can comprehend what you're even doing. None of the characters seem remotely interesting or fun (Except for Terry, purely because he's in smash). It would help if there was an actual story mode, telling me why I should care about these characters. This game's roster of characters is almost as big as Smash, but I have no reason to care for any of them at all.
I have to change the level of the CPU in the SETTINGS and not the versus menu, and there's only 5 levels of CPU. 3 was absoultely baby mode for beginner me but then level 4 absoultely creamed me with seemingly invincible moves. Would have helped if half my moves hadn't flat out refused to work and pass right through the enemy without dealing any damage.
And the inputs in this game are so majorly clunky. My fingers hurt from mashing the life out of my controller, and the move I want to do still doesn't come out, even though I have the button inputs on screen, and guess what? I input it correctly. the game just said 'nah fam, I'm not in the mood to let you do this input."
And there's all these other weird gameplay mechanics that are the exact opposite of intuitive, require you to do multiple cancels and inputs that don't work, and have no purpose in the game.
All in all, this is the worst fighting game I've ever seen and I will probably only play a few more hours of it before I uninstall it and burn it from my brain.

one of the best fucking fighting games of all time and my favorite MODERN fighting game that can still be accessed on ps4 and shit. god game

You have to learn Spanish to be good at the game. That's the secret.

Not the way I wanted the series to move forward in the modern era. While the gameplay is not bad and it still offers a fun time, the art direction and graphics took several steps back and takes away the visual charm that previous games in the series had.

the king of fighter is cool, but no one talks about the king of friendship!

they did some weird things to the movesets in this game for some characters but it's also the last chance i'll get to play kensou for a while

i did raging storm on a chromebook

Pretty nice roster ngl. Ost is solid like usual. The plot is a little weird and XV doesn't help clear that up for us. The only thing holding it back is the visuals, and how they made Kyo look cursed.
